Interconnecting Stakeholders in Learning and Drama in Serbia

Problem analysis:
1) School curricula – distanced from reality 2) Teaching Style – directive, non-dialogical,
anachronous 3) Teachers training – inert, reluctant in accepting
professional innovations 4) Cooperation and coordination between
sectors, levels and instances – non-existent and non-functional
!!! Centralized system and absence of dialogue and cooperation are blocking
the educational reform
Description of the Action :
Connecting stakeholders in education who are at present not cooperating– Civil Society Organizations (CSO) and schools, teachers and artists, decision makers, researchers, professors, students... In order to:
Empower teachers to become agents of educational reform,
Bring educational practice closer to practice, Improve initial teachers’ formation programs, Modernize school curricula.
We use drama in education to develop cultural sensitivity and learning skills of children and the youth in Serbia
Philosophy of change:

4. Decision makers in the field of education
Activities:
Seminars for practicing teachers in schools & youth groups: how to apply drama within the curriculum, how to devise and perform, how to enhance tolerance, active citizenship, peer collaboration, attitude development etc.
Collecting best practices, examples, theoretical models – texts, model descriptions, excerpts from youth productions and publishing them on-line
Researching teachers’ needs for training in creative and applied drama and publishing the results
Seminars for students – future teachers, in 4 HEIs
Creating teaching & learning tools: the manual “Tolerant Classroom”, specialized method models for different age groups, plays for school theatre etc.
Bringing together stakeholders in drama and education - practitioners, experts and decision makers - around tribunes, round tables and the conference
Results:
1. LOTREC – Local Resource Centers for teachers enable: Training min. 80 teachers per year in application of drama in education
2. DEGAS - Web platform for education and communication of teachers using drama in Serbia, enables:
NADEŽDA: a step closer to establishing the National Association of Drama Educators
RENOIR: research of educators’ needs for early and vocational training in creative and applied drama – Pedagogical Society of Serbia
3. SEZAN – Seminars for students – future teachers, in 4 HEIs
4. MONET - Tribunes, round tables and other dialogical frameworks discussing curricula reform among practitioners, experts and decision makers, culminating in:
ARTERY: National conference dedicated to curricular reform in art education, especially DRAMA
Added value:
Redefining of the social role and the authority of a teacher is an asset for restoration of the value system in the Serbian society.
Teachers need to think of their very special position in the society – the one symbolizing progress, prosperity, culture and nobility of spirit, while their role of fostering the future obliges them with honor and incomparable responsibility.
