about Interim Certification• Interim Certification is required by the Michigan Legislation to teach

unless a corps member holds a Michigan provisional or professional certification

• State law requires a 3.0+GPA and candidates must pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (Basic Skills, as well as the subject and level that you plan to teach)

• Must submit required documentation to the U of M School of Ed for us to request that the Michigan Dept. of Ed. issue an interim certification in the endorsement areas that TFA Detroit staff indicates:• Official transcripts• CPR/First Aid/Bloodborne Pathogen training documentation• Fingerprinting/Criminal Background check affidavit

•Cannot add or alter certification endorsements after the interim certification has been issued. This is especially important for those who want to teach beyond their time in the corps or earn Provisional Certification to teach a particular subject and grade level.

Page 9: Interim Certification & Master of Arts in Educational Studies: Urban Pedagogy Programs for Teach For America-Detroit Corps Members

about the Interim Certification Program• outcomes and performance-based

• success is judged by demonstration of skillful teaching expected of novices as evaluated using the program rubric during field visits and on portfolio entries

• non-credit bearing, but satisfies Michigan Department of Education professional development requirements for new teachers

• designed for in-service teachers

• builds upon what you are experiencing in your classrooms in that instructors ascertain what corps members are encountering during their teaching and incorporate those challenges and successes into their lessons

• classes held bi-weekly, during evenings in Detroit to accommodate the busy professional lives of teachers

• scheduled to avoid conflict with masters program classes

Page 10: Interim Certification & Master of Arts in Educational Studies: Urban Pedagogy Programs for Teach For America-Detroit Corps Members

3 components of the Interim Certification ProgramContent Methods

Seminars• Meet bi-weekly on

Tuesday or Thursday evenings at the UM Detroit Center

• Organized by flexible modules focused on topics of importance common to new teachers

• Instruction about skillful teaching with visualizations to make teaching more transparent (e.g. demonstrations, rehearsals, video analysis of teaching)

Field Instruction

• Four visits (1/quarter) to your classroom by field instructor, all of whom are/have been practitioners

• Evaluation and feedback given via program rubric and narrative comments

Portfolio• Compile a professional

portfolio of evidence of teaching practice with artifacts and reflective writings

• Portfolio tasks cap each seminar module

• Suitable for presentation to prospective employers

Seminars & Field Instruction can be

elected as EDUC 638 for 3 credits

Portfolio Compilation & Exhibition can be elected as EDUC 655 for 2 credits

State legislation requires a successful 3rd year of teaching in your placement. During this year, you will have 4 field

instruction visits and will need to receive satisfactory ratings, as well as add portfolio entries that include an employment verification letter, satisfactory evals., letter of rec., and IDP.
