Internal communication and HR
Oli HowardInterim Head of Strategy
CIPD
The Industrial Revolution
• Large factory units replace small family workshops.
• Urbanisation and the development of slums.
• Men as unskilled workers in new trades.
• Women and children in textile mills and factories.
• Disease, accidents, poor conditions, lack of education and loss of self-respect.
An idea emerges:workshould be better
“Social work is based on certain obligations and responsibilities on the part of the employer: the work done should be fit for human beings and should in no way degrade them, that it should be carried out under such conditions and with such precautions as to secure the well-being of the workers and that the wages paid should be a just reward for the labour and time spent performing it, in no case falling below what was necessary to keep the worker ‘in frugal comfort’.”
David Crichton, Rowntrees, 1909
Communication makes work better
• “If we want our employing enterprise to succeed and survive, we shall actively desire our employee to have information that will justify them in putting their best into the enterprise.”
• Alexander Heron, 1942
