Islington Junior Middle School is a unique school which wasestablished in 1832 and is the second oldest elementary school inToronto. We are proud of our international character and thediversity of our students. Over 40 languages are spoken atIslington JMS. We strive to ensure that each learner hasopportunities to develop as a positive, open-minded contributor tosociety in a welcoming environment with high expectations andacademic excellence. We also provide opportunities for studentleadership and service and work hard to promote equity, equalityand understanding. At Islington we also combine our strongacademic focus with an extensive extra-curricular program inmusic, drama, dance and sports.

Academic Excellence:At Islington , we continue to use themany exemplary practices andcelebrate and share our successthrough our scheduled CommonPlanning Time for teachers andstudents.  We will focus on thecontinuation and improvement of ourProfessional Learning Communities through a balanced literacyapproach.  Professional Learning Communities will focus oninstructional growth using a school wide common 'Big Idea' ofEnvironmental Awareness, Social Responsibility and GlobalCitizenship integrated into all subject areas through the use of theTeaching and Learning Critical Pathway.

Character Education , Equity and the EnvironmentAt Islington Junior Middle School, we have incorporated the TDSBCharacter Education Attributes, Environmental and Equity initiativesinto our daily curricular program and leadership groups. The studentrun Environmental and Equity Ministries regularly present to ourprimary/junior and intermediate divisions at assemblies. 

The Arts:Islington Junior Middle School transforms into many landscapesranging from lush African Jungles to exotic Agrabah. Studentspresent  musicals such as Lion King, Aladdin and our 175thAnniversary Pageant. Students receive dance instruction fromprofessional dance teachers and theatre companies. We direct themain cast actors and teach songs in preparation for the event.

Student Leadership:We are strongly committed to instilling high expectations forstudents both behaviourally and academically. Student Leadershipis an integral part of our school climate. Members of our StudentParliament, Peer Mediators, Conflict Managers, All RightsCommittee and Ambassadors work hard to promote equity, equalityand understanding.

Sports Activities:Our students participate in a variety of activities which promotehealth, fitness and co-operation. At Islington, our Athletic Teamsconsist of Basketball, Volleyball, Cross Country Running, Track andField, Soccer, Football and Cricket for both boys and girls. Studentsalso participate in The MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence :Grade 5 Hockey Academy.

Student Life - Where You Belong

In addition to our strong academic program, our schooloffers students many opportunities to participate in a varietyof extra curricular activities and clubs. Students learnempathy and caring for those less fortunate through studentrun fundraising initiatives that support children'scharities and world relief efforts. Over the years, IslingtonJMS has helped build schools, provide fresh water, food andbed kits for children all over the world. We firmly believe thatstudents rise to the high level of expectations put in place forthem both behaviourally and academically.  We also believewhen given the opportunity, students become leaders andtake an active role in developing positive attitudes  andpromoting an engaging school climate while at the sametime supporting younger students. At Islington, students willhave the opportunity to participate in numerous sporting andrecreational activities that will further refine and developleadership skills and enhance confidence and self esteem.

Parent and Community Engagement

We are fortunate to have wonderful parental support and communityinvolvement. Students benefit from our partnership with the BigBrothers organization. We share our school achievementsuccess with our student teachers through our partnership withOISE, University of Toronto and Ryerson University.  We continue toenjoy supportive parent participation in the Islington SchoolCouncil. We have recently formed a partnership with the MabelleCoalition which benefits both our local community and our students. A partnership with Toronto Police, The National Junior GolfAcademy and Islington Golf and Country Club has been establishedthat provides students with the opportunity to learn to golf .  We arefortunate in the SW1 Family of Schools to skate and to be part of theHockey Academy at the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence.
