This outdoor stroll starts in the staff parking lot behind the Warehouse and Wound Center. Simply follow the perimeter of the parking lot a total of 10 times to complete 1 mile.

The Healthy Facts of WALKING

Walking is one of the simplest and safest aerobic exercises you can do. It will help you strengthen your bones, control your weight, and condition your heart and lungs.

Being consistent in your walking exercise routine is one of the most important factors in developing a healthy physical activity program. Research has shown that people who walk approximately 20-25 miles per week outlive those who don’t walk by several years.

Here are some quick facts about walking:

• On average, every minute of walking can extend your life by 1.5 to 2 minutes.

• Walking an extra 20 minutes each day will burn off 7 pounds of body fat per year.

• To burn off 1 plain M&M candy, you need to walk the full length of a football field.

• Longer, moderately-paced daily walks (40 minutes at 60% to 65% maximum heart rate) are best for losing weight.

• Shorter, faster walks (20-25 minutes at 75% to 85% maximum heart rate) are best for conditioning your heart and lungs.

Roasted spaghetti squashed topped with marinara sauce, grilled chicken, melted mozzarella and some fresh basil! It’s Amore!

Cheesy Baked Spaghetti Squash Boats with Grilled Chicken

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 small/medium ripe spaghetti squash• salt and fresh pepper, to taste• 4 thin chicken cutlets, about 3oz each• pinch of garlic powder• ¼ tsp oregano• 2 cups marinara sauce, warm• 1 cup part skim shredded mozzarella

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350°. Cut the squash in half lengthwise, scoop out the seeds and fibers with a spoon. Place on a baking sheet, cut side up and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast about an hour or until the skin gives easily under pressure and the inside is tender.

If you prefer the microwave, cut squash in half lengthwise, scoop out seeds and fibers and place on a microwave safe dish and cover. Microwave 8-9 minutes.

Meanwhile, while the squash is roasting, season chicken cutlets with salt, pepper, garlic powder and oregano. Heat a grill pan (or a George formal grill) over medium-high heat, when hot grill chicken on both sides until cooked through, about 3-5 minutes. Set aside on a dish.

Remove the spaghetti squash from the oven or microwave and carefully fluff the spaghetti-like strands on each half with a fork, leaving the squash in the shell. Season with salt and pepper, then spoon about 1/4 cup marinara in each boat.

Slice the chicken on the diagonal and place each piece on top of each squash half. Top the chicken with 1/4 cup each of remaining marinara sauce, then top with cheese and place back into the hot oven and cook until the cheese is melted and the sauce is hot, about 12 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil and serve with parmesan cheese on the side if desired.

Our goal is to be the patient’s advocate, while vigilantly providing safe and effective anesthesia. Cases we provide anesthesia for include general surgery, orthopedic, urology, gynecology, obstetrics, vascular, neurology, thoracic, ophthalmology, ENT, plastics, podiatry, gastroenterology and pain management. In 2016, Nurse Anesthetists provided anesthesia in 8,313 cases at Medical West. In addition to providing anesthesia care to our patients, we are all clinical instructors for both Samford and UAB’s Nurse Anesthesia programs.

Medical West Nurse Anesthetists evaluate the patient prior to providing care to the patient and collaborate with the Anesthesiologist to form the best anesthetic plan for the patient and procedure. We provide general anesthesia, monitored anesthesia sedation and spinal anesthesia to patients in the hospital/ASC operating rooms, the GI Lab and OB department. We are available for emergency intubations during Code Blue or respiratory distress situations. Our Nurse Anesthetists are with the patient continually throughout their procedure.
