As usual a wonderful variety of dishes providedby members for a pot luck lunch was enjoyed. The highlight of the afternoon was a walk aroundthe grounds to the lake and fountain thenthrough the forest bush walk. Also the gardenalong the drive to the house has been developedwith many varieties of trees and floweringbushes a lovely shady setting.

The main concern this month will be moisture plenty of water will be needed for your garden.

All those vegetables will be producing so watchout for summer insects. Thrips are a particularmenace.

Lightly prune roses and dead head to encour-age more flowers. Also disbud chrysanthe-mums. February is the main month to plantbulbs.

Fruit harvest begins this month. Keep the treeswell watered to swell the fruit size.

Grape vines need to be trimmed before finalharvest and covering with a net to prevent thebirds from eating all those grapes.

Thats my guess about the guy in red who cruisedthrough Maungaturoto in the towns annual Christmas Pa-rade, then . . . disappeared.Santa didnt come to the after-match party at the CountryClub and there were a few long-faced children as a result. But consider the prospect of meeting punters if, indeed, hewas the real Santa. The guy who drops by on Christmas Eve is known to beshy. He might drink milk or beer thats left for him, butnever hangs around hoping to get to know people.

And at this time of year, the real Santa is frantic. So manygifts, so many kids, so many miles, so many elves and, thereal biggie, so many reindeer to train to peak physical fit-ness.Yep, its official. When Mike, who was lined up to be thefake Santa in the parade, couldnt make it, he contactedthe real Santa. This raises some interesting questions because oneperson suggested he was Maori, another wondered if hewas actually a woman. Then someone said the parade organiser would know. Butalthough she was zipping round in a foxy Santa dress look-ing pretty authoritative, she had no idea.

She also seemed rather too pleased about the unknownidentity of the mystery man in red, which confirms suspi-cions that he was the real Santa. And thats why he disappeared so soon. The magiciandisappeared too - in the best possible way. When Circus

Kumarani of Dargaville said they would come to the party

to stilt-walk and juggle, the budget wouldnt stretch. When we tentatively asked the magician if he wouldntmind disappearing he was overjoyed. Christmas is franticfor magicians and, unlike Santas, they cant delegate. Hehad two appointments that day and was only too pleased topostpone the third.Sadly Doug the Digger disappeared too - but not in a goodway. He phoned in the afternoon to say his trucks elec-tronics had blown out and a fix couldnt be arranged tillMonday and would cost $3000. Even the magiciancouldnt solve that one.Luckily the RockUp inflatable pirate ship arrived, along withthe Mangawhai Agility Dogs. They wowed the crowd with

their dancing, jumping and leaping. The farmer was im-pressed with the dogs ability to put a paw on a buttonwhich sent a ball flying which they would then neatly catch. One of these wonder dogs is related to my dear Floss -same parents, different litter. And a much more skilledhandler! We spent much of the day in a mild panic, wonderingwhether the musician had disappeared too. The deal hadbeen done, the contract signed, but efforts to contact him inrecent days had failed. But he showed up armed with Christmas music, a can-doattitude and a fantastic singing voice then crooned into thenight, long after most of the happy little children and their

    mums and dads had disappeared.
