END TERM 1 - 2.30pm Dismissal

Dear Parents,

What a fantastic day at HEPS; the school was abuzz with bikes, spinning wheels and a huge Life

Education Van. It was wonderful to witness so many children riding their bikes, scooters and skateboards

to school on a perfect sunny day. The grade 5 students rode safely to and from Norton’s Park, enjoying a

barbecue lunch in between. Our prep students learnt how to spin fleece into yarn and some of our classes

made a visit to the Life Ed. van to learn about keeping their bodies healthy. The school was alive with

interactive and engaging activities.

Thank you to all our parents who supported the Grade 5 Bike Education program in various ways,

particularly riding to and from the park keeping our students in check or cooking lunch and cleaning up to

ensure that the park was left in pristine condition. Thank you to Max Woolcock for yet again sharing his

expertise about bike education with our students and staff and making himself available throughout the

program, Rosie Lumsden and Natalie Blenheim for working with the students and of course our grade 5

teachers, Alyce Blonik and Melissa Frigo. A great program for our students, and life skill!

GRADE TWO LEARNING FACILITY

It is quite obvious that a module now sits adjacent to the Kitchen Garden. Workmen will continue to visit

the premises throughout the next weeks ensuring that the interior is up to standard for our students and

that the exterior is finished off and safe. I believe the classrooms will be ready for use at the

commencement of term two.

ASBESTOS MANAGEMENT IN SCHOOLS

As part of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s Health and Safety

Management Plan, new labelling will be installed at our school.

The labels remind people to contact school reception prior to undertaking any works at the school, to

ensure they have up-to-date information from the school’s asbestos register.

Asbestos - which was used extensively in building materials in the past but is now banned - is considered

safe unless damaged or in poor condition.

The new labels form part of a comprehensive program to ensure Victorian government schools remain

safe. Children’s safety is our number one priority. That is why we are taking this extra step as a

precaution.

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION

The Parents’ Association held its AGM on Thursday 13th

March. After the President read out her report

and the Treasurer’s report a new Parents’ Association for 2014 was formed. Congratulations to the

following members for becoming office bearers:

President: Kellie Liddell

Vice President: Megan Wall

Secretary: Jenny van Dijk

Treasurer: Shereen Hook

We look forward to another successful year of active and energized involvement of our Parents’

Association. Thank you to our parents who could attend and those that will support the committee by

becoming involved when ‘hands’ are required for fund raising or community spirited activities.

THE HEPS FAMILY FUN DAY commencing 2.00pm on Sunday 23rd March is imminent! I know

that Nicky Marran and Mark Granland (parents) have put in a huge amount of time and effort to provide

you and your family a challenging and entertaining day. Not only a day designed to share and have fun

but a great way to meet, greet and feel that sense of belonging to HEPS, a positive and engaging

community. See you at school ready for engaging action.

REMINDERS

SCHOOL COUNCIL / ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – AGM

We will be holding our School Council’s Annual General Meeting on Monday 24th

March, at 7.00pm. At

this meeting reports will be presented by the President, Treasurer and School Principal. All members of

our school community are welcome to attend. Please inform the school if you wish to attend so that we

can cater accordingly. After the AGM we will hold our first new School Council for the year 2014.

End of Term One: Our students will be dismissed from school on Friday 4th

March at 2.30pm after a

warm farewell to Term One and the Easter Raffle.

Kind regards,

Kitty Allard.

Principal.

HARMONY DAY will be celebrated at HEPS on Thursday 3rd

April; this day highlights

Australia’s Diversity; we believe everyone belongs! The students will be divided into

multi age groups and participate in multi-cultural activities throughout the day, thanks to

Mrs Sue Fraser and her enthusiastic team.

EASTER BONNET PARADE: As is our tradition we love to involve the students in an

Easter Bonnet Parade; this will be held on Friday 4th

April, the last day of term one. So

start those creative juices flowing and supervise your child’s creation so that they can

enjoy the parade and get into the spirit of Easter.

From the Facilities and Grounds Committee.... Taking part in working bees is very important for the continued maintenance of, and improvements to, the gardens and grounds of the school. Last Saturday was our first working bee for 2014 and we were delighted with the commitment of families who either worked at the school or gave donations. There were at least 30 families represented which means in money terms it would have cost the school over $5,000 to have contractors on site for the morning doing the same work. Instead of that, all it cost the school was some sausages, bread, tomato sauce and a few cans of soft drink! Thank you to all who helped! The Facilities and Grounds Committee is enthusiastically planning to undertake various projects this year, including creating a new courtyard space between the BER Building and the existing main building. We will need a few handy Dads to help with this! We would also like to improve the kitchen garden space and are working on design ideas for enhancing the playgrounds and playspace areas which will be driven by imaginative ideas from all the students. So..."Watch this Space"!! Justin Staggard On behalf of the team- Mark Granland, Wayne Smith, Brett Smith, Adam Liddell, Darren Fairbank, Andy Martin, Scott Wainwright and Christine Finighan. Junior School Council 2014

Active After School Activities. We are very fortunate here at H.E.P.S to be able to offer the Active After School Communities sport skill-based sessions each week. During Term 1 we have been running a cricket clinic for the grades 3-6 children here at H.E.P.S. Each week Coach Luke runs the children through many skill based activities, practising our catching, throwing and batting skills. With just one more week, I know the children have enjoyed the term & looking forward to the game we are playing next Tuesday, being our last session. Thank you to all who have participated & shown great sportsmanship and respect throughout. David Deith, AASC co-ordinator Bev Darling, AASC supervisor
