By Herbie Teope The Kansas City Star (TNS) The Kansas City Chiefs’ path to Super Bowl LIV went through one of the NFL’s elite ground attacks, anchored by elite Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry. Now, the Chiefs’ quest for a league champion- ship means dealing with the San Francisco 49ers’ potent backfield of Tevin Coleman, Raheem Mostert and Matt Breida. Each Niners running back brings a unique skill-set to the field, so this matchup presents yet another challenge to Kansas City’s defense. “They’ve got a dynamic run game,” Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu said. “They motion a lot, a lot of window dressing, so it kind of messes with your eyes, especially the guys that play a lot at the end of the line of scrimmage. “So, outside (line) backers, defensive ends and safeties that come down in run support, they do a lot of stuff to fool with your eyes and get certain leverages on you. And they’ve got running backs that if they get a hole, they hit it and they’re gone.” The 5-foot-10, 197- pound Mostert’s 772 rushing yards in 2019 paced a 49ers ground attack that ranked second in the league during the regular season at 144.1 yards per game. Mostert, Breida (623) and Coleman (544) each ran for 500- plus yards and the trio combined for 15 of the 49ers’ 23 rushing scores. San Francisco’s com- mitment to the running game continued during the postseason, as the team totaled 471 yards and six touchdowns on 89 carries, averaging 5.2 yards per attempt. “Their backs have dif- ferent attributes that makes them danger- ous,” Chiefs defensive tackle Mike Pennel said. “We’ll have a game plan for them.” The 6-foot-1, 210- pound Coleman’s 105 yards and two touch- downs on 22 carries contributed to San Francisco’s 186 total yards on the ground in a 27-10 win over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Divisional Round. With Coleman suffer- ing a dislocated shoulder in the NFC Championship Game, Mostert picked up the slack with 220 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries during a domi- nating 37-20 win over the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game. Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday sounded optimistic about Coleman’s availability for the Super Bowl, so the Chiefs are on track to face a fully intact backfield. “I expect him to have a chance to play,” Shanahan told report- ers. “Can’t hold me to that. We’ll find out more after the imaging, but expect him to have a good chance to play.” Given the results of last weekend’s game against Henry, who was limited to 69 yards rushing after averaging 188.5 yards in the Titans’ previous two playoff games, it’s a good thing the Chiefs have already been down this road. The Chiefs successfully used a swarming defen- sive mindset against Henry. Players were cognizant of maintain- ing their gap or edge discipline depending on assignments. While there are con- trasting styles between Henry and the 49ers’ backfield, the Chiefs’ defense is taking the same approach in prepar- ing for Mostert, Coleman and Brieda. “Obviously, the differ- ence is Derrick Henry is more a traditional power back,” Chiefs defen- sive lineman Demone Harris said. “These guys are speed backs, but it’s the same thing as far as discipline. “You’ve got to be dis- ciplined in your run gaps, be square at the line of scrimmage, make your plays, don’t allow cut- back lanes, because they hit it faster than Derrick Henry.” Mathieu agreed. “If we give these guys certain creases or cut- back lanes — all three of them are low 4.4s, low 4.3s (40-yard dash times) — they’re going to hit their heads in the goal post,” Mathieu said. “So, it’s going to be important once again for the sec- ondary to get involved in the run game and kind of ID certain formations, and really just to get to the ball. Effort, effort, effort.” The Chiefs have several days left to game-plan for the 49ers’ ground attack before flying Sunday to Miami, a week ahead of Super Bowl LIV. While the Chiefs’ defensive players embrace the next chal- lenge of matching up against a dangerous trio of rushers, they won’t be overthinking it. “I don’t think you approach it any differ- ently,” safety Daniel Sorensen said. “Run defense is the same. Everyone in their gaps and assignment football.” “They’re speed demons, but it kind of goes back to what I said last time: do you job and do it well,” defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi added. Chiefs’ improved run defense preparing for 49ers KU leads early, falls on the road at Texas By the Salina Journal AMES, Iowa — Kansas State used a late third-quarter rally to erase a 13-point Iowa State lead, but the Cyclones stopped the comeback to hold off the Wildcats, 73-59, on Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum. With the loss, K-State slipped to 7-9 with a 1-4 Big 12 record, while Iowa State jumped to 11-6 overall and 3-3 in the league. The Cyclones use a 9-3 run to end the first half for a 36-25 lead and stretched it to 13 points, 42-29, on an Ashley Joens layup with 6:25 left in the third quarter. But the Wildcats closed the period with a 12-5 surge, closing within 49-45 heading into the fourth. Cymone Goodrich and Peyton Williams combined for 10 of the 12 points during the rally, and Williams’ basket to start the fourth quarter closed it to two. Iowa State immediately turned to Joens, the Big 12’s leading scorer, for the next five points to extend the lead. Williams used her own five- point run to pull K-State within six, 65-59, with 2:05 left, but the Cyclones closed it out from there. Williams led the Wildcats with 15 points and nine rebounds. Ayoka Lee 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while Angela Harris scored 11 points with seven assist and six rebounds. Iowa State was led by Joens with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Rae Johnson added a career-high 19 points and eight assists off the bench. Kansas State returns home to Bramlage Coliseum at 2 p.m. Saturday to play host to Oklahoma. Texas women 85, Kansas 77 At Austin, the Kansas women held a five-point lead in the second quarter, but a 12-0 Texas run proved to be the difference in Wednesday night’s eight-point loss. The Jayhawks fell to 12-5 on the season and 1-5 in the Big 12 , while Texas improved to 12-6 and 4-2. Texas led 9-4 in the first quarter, but Kansas charged back leading by as many five and led 23-19 after one. The Jayhawks led 25-20 with 9:18 left in the second period after a layup by Emma Merriweather, but Texas then went on a 17-7 run to close the quarter and take a 37-32 lead at halftime. T h e K a n s a s C i t y Chiefs’ path to Super Bowl LIV went through one of the NFL’s elite ground attacks, anchored by elite Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry.

Now, the Chiefs’ quest for a league champion-ship means dealing with the San Francisco 49ers’ p o t e n t b a c k f i e l d o f Tevin Coleman, Raheem Mostert and Matt Breida.

“So, outside (line)backers, defensive ends and safeties that come down in run support, they do a lot of stuff to fool with your eyes and

get certain leverages on you. And they’ve got running backs that if they get a hole, they hit it and they’re gone.”

The 5-foot-10, 197-pound Mostert’s 772 rushing yards in 2019 paced a 49ers ground attack that ranked second in the league during the regular season at 144.1 yards per game. Mostert, Breida (623) and Coleman (544) each ran for 500-plus yards and the trio combined for 15 of the 49ers’ 23 rushing scores.

San Francisco’s com-mitment to the running game continued during the postseason, as the team totaled 471 yards and six touchdowns on 89 carries, averaging 5.2 yards per attempt.

“Their backs have dif-ferent attributes that makes them danger-ous,” Chiefs defensive tackle Mike Pennel said. “We’ll have a game plan for them.”

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Coleman’s 105 yards and two touch-downs on 22 carries c o n t r i b u t e d t o S a n Francisco’s 186 total

yards on the ground in a 27-10 win over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Divisional Round.

With Coleman suffer-ing a dislocated shoulder in the NFC Championship Game, Mostert picked up the slack with 220 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries during a domi-nating 37-20 win over the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game.

Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday sounded optimistic about Coleman’s availability for the Super Bowl, so the Chiefs are on track to face a fully intact backfield.

“ I e x p e c t h i m t o have a chance to play,” Shanahan told report-ers. “Can’t hold me to that. We’ll find out more after the imaging, but expect him to have a good chance to play.”

Given the results of last weekend’s game against Henry, who was limited to 69 yards rushing after averaging 188.5 yards in the Titans’ previous two playoff games, it’s a good thing the Chiefs have already been down this road.

The Chiefs successfully used a swarming defen-sive mindset against Henry. Players were cognizant of maintain-ing their gap or edge discipline depending on assignments.

While there are con-trasting styles between Henry and the 49ers’ backfield, the Chiefs’ defense is taking the same approach in prepar-ing for Mostert, Coleman and Brieda.

“Obviously, the differ-ence is Derrick Henry is more a traditional power back,” Chiefs defen-sive lineman Demone Harris said. “These guys are speed backs, but it’s the same thing as far as discipline.

“You’ve got to be dis-ciplined in your run gaps, be square at the line of scrimmage, make your plays, don’t allow cut-back lanes, because they hit it faster than Derrick Henry.”

Mathieu agreed.“If we give these guys

certain creases or cut-back lanes — all three of them are low 4.4s, low 4.3s (40-yard dash

times) — they’re going to hit their heads in the goal post,” Mathieu said. “So, it’s going to be important once again for the sec-ondary to get involved in the run game and kind of ID certain formations, and really just to get to the ball. Effort, effort, effort.”

The Chiefs have several days left to game-plan for the 49ers’ ground attack before flying Sunday to Miami, a week ahead of Super Bowl LIV.

W h i l e t h e C h i e f s ’ d e f e n s i v e p l a y e r s embrace the next chal-lenge of matching up against a dangerous trio of rushers, they won’t be overthinking it.

“I don’t think you approach it any differ-ently,” safety Daniel Sorensen said. “Run defense is the same. E v e r y o n e i n t h e i r gaps and assignment football.”

“ T h e y ’ r e s p e e d demons, but it kind of goes back to what I said last time: do you job and do it well,” defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi added.

KU leads early, falls on the road at Texas

By the Salina Journal

AMES, Iowa — Kansas State used a late third-quarter rally to erase a 13-point Iowa State lead, but the Cyclones stopped the comeback to hold off the Wildcats, 73-59, on Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum.

Williams used her own five-point run to pull K-State within six, 65-59, with 2:05 left, but the Cyclones closed it out from there.

Texas women 85, Kansas 77

At Austin, the Kansas women held a five-point lead in the second quarter, but a 12-0 Texas run proved to be the difference in Wednesday night’s eight-point loss.
