We’re counting on youBy Miranda Reiman I know what it’s like to have someone depending on me. I have four little children who look to me for clean clothes, a full tummy, and lots of love and support. It’s been a few years, but I also remember what it’s like to come to a feedbunk, lined with cattle looking up, eagerly awaiting breakfast or supper. No doubt, you know that feeling well. Maybe it’s the cows waiting for you to chisel ice during a cold snap—a scene that might seem all too familiar to many northern readers this year. Maybe it’s the weaned calves going from momma’s care to your care. Regardless of the situation, if you’re raising cattle, you know what it’s like to be needed. But have you ever thought of the others, all along the beef chain who put their faith in you? Maybe it’s Ruth Ammon, an office manager at a western Nebraska feedlot; it could be Dan Chase, an export specialist from Florida; or perhaps it’s Meg Groves, a carcass data collector from Iowa. These people rely on you. Their jobs exist only because of a healthy and robust beef industry. The list continues with everyone from chefs to meat marketers to even ag journalists like myself. (Sure, I could write about broccoli, but certainly my livelihood would not be the same without committed cattlemen and women across this country.) For many of these people, it’s not just about beef. It’s about really good beef. “We’re a premium provider and we’re priced at a premium. There are always going to be countries that are going to be cheaper than us,” says Liz Wunderlich, of the U.S. Meat Export Federation, yet another person who has made a career out of this business we all love. “We talk about why we’re unique, with beef that’s grain-fed, high-quality.” Those producers who seek more knowledge of their end product require smart feedlot employees who can help track that data and relay it. They need

collectors in the plant, gathering marbling and yield information. Chefs like Mark Morgan, near Baltimore, build their reputation on serving the best beef available. Salespeople like Scott Redden of North Carolina find repeat customers when they move product like that. It’s a circle. You need them, too. The people who take what you produce and make sure it reaches its highest potential, also make sure it reaches its highest value. They want you to be rewarded for your work. In that sense, you need them, too. Without high beef demand, without a premium protein to sell, life would be so different for people like meat cutter Tim Toussaint and Ohio packer Bob Boliantz. Keeping cattle alive, healthy and productive is a big responsibility to shoulder. You might not think of the gravity of that as you go about your everyday tasks, but it’s a pretty astounding purpose. Although it’s less tangible on the ranch, keeping the beef business healthy and productive is equally so. Next time in Black Ink® Steve Suther will consider calving time. Questions? E-mail [email protected].

Industry News & NotesOCA Accepting Bull Consignments for

Seedstock Improvement Sale – Deadline January 31

(MARYSVILLE, Ohio) — The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association is currently accepting bull consignments to the Seedstock Improvement Sale. The sale will be held April 11 at noon at the Union Stock Yards Company in Hillsboro, Ohio. This event offers an affordable way to market bulls from multiple breeds in one location and on one day. Buyers have the assurance of buying bulls with known genetics, a completed vaccination regimen and a breeding soundness exam. The Seedstock Improvement Sale is open to consignments from all breeds. Consignors must be a current member of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association to participate. Bulls are required to be registered and to have expected progeny differences (EPDs). The bulls will be placed in sale order based on a within breed evaluation star system using EPDs for birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, milk, marbling and ribeye. Bulls consigned to the sale can be one to five years of age. History of the sale shows that bulls 18 months of age and older command a higher price. Consignors will be allowed to substitute bulls for entries made to the Seedstock Improvement Sale. All bulls are required to be tested for Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) persistent infection (PI) status. For more information on the sale including all requirements, visit www.ohiocattle.org and look under the Beef Improvement section or contact the OCA office at 614-873-6736 or [email protected]. Consignment deadline for the sale is January 31, 2015.

Ohio Cattlemen’s Association Accepting Best of the Buckeye

Participant Scholarship Applications (MARYSVILLE, Ohio) — The Best of the Buckeye program will offer twenty (20) $500 scholarship opportunities for Best of the Buckeye participants to offset the cost of purchasing, raising and exhibiting a Best of the Buckeye nominated calf. Scholarships will be awarded to less-experienced participants, ages 8-21, with consideration given to the applicant’s financial need. Scholarship applications can be found on the

OCA website and will be due on January 15, 2015 and scholarship recipients will be notified in February 2015. Recipients will receive their scholarship when they exhibit their Best of Buckeye nominated cattle at either the Ohio Beef Expo or the Ohio State Fair. The Best of the Buckeye program is hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association in conjunction with the Ohio Beef Expo and the Ohio State Fair, and recognizes top-placing Ohio bred, born and registered calves, along with the breeder and exhibitor, in each breed division at the two shows. Thanks to generous sponsors, $45,000 will be presented during 2015 in the form of premiums at the two shows, scholarships and awards. This year’s sponsors are Green Oak Farms, heifer division; Steve R. Rauch, steer division; and Franklin Equipment, scholarship division. The program was formed to provide Ohio seedstock breeders an additional marketing opportunity, create a source for moderately priced show steers and heifers by providing a program with awards and prestige, and to attract new participants interested in showing at the Ohio Beef Expo and/or the Ohio State Fair. Best of the Buckeye cattle must be registered and bred by an Ohio cattleman and born in state. Embryo transfer calves and calves out of purchased bred cows are eligible if they were born in Ohio and list an Ohio cattleman as the breeder. Best of the Buckeye nominations can be made by the breeder or the exhibitor. To be eligible for the Best of the Buckeye program, cattle must be registered and the breeder or exhibitor of the registered animal must pay a per animal nomination fee. Cattle that are nominated prior to the Ohio Beef Expo by March 1, 2015 and prior to the Ohio State Fair by June 20, 2015 will incur a $25 per head nomination fee per show. Cattle may be nominated for both shows by March 1, 2015 for a rate of $40. Breeders will have the opportunity to nominate cattle through check-in at the Ohio Beef Expo and at the Ohio State Fair at an increased late nomination fee of $75 per head. To participate in Best of the Buckeye, breeders must complete a nomination form and sign an affidavit verifying Best of the Buckeye eligibility. For nomination forms contact OCA or visit www.ohiocattle.org. Best of the Buckeye exhibitor rules along with additional nomination details are available at www.ohiocattle.org/best-of-the-buckeye or by contacting the OCA office. For more information, contact the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association at 614-873-6736, email [email protected].

Beef Specialist: Producers Must Address Cold Stress in Herds

Cold stress on beef herds should be addressed for animals during the winter to maintain necessary body condition going into the calving season, a Purdue Extension beef cattle specialist says. Ron Lemenager said cattle can maintain an optimal body condition score of 5 to 5.5 - an industry rating of body weight - that would allow the animal to more readily adapt to low winter temperatures as long as they have a dry winter hair coat and access to a windbreak. But he said that when wind chill dips below 30 degrees Fahrenheit, cows need more energy. The energy requirement for a cow with a good body condition and a dry winter hair coat increases by 13 percent for each 10-degree Fahrenheit drop in wind chill factor below 30 degrees. The energy requirement for a cow that is thin, or has a wet coat, increases 30 percent with each 10-degree drop in wind chill. “We need to think about supplementing

forage-based maintenance diets with a high energy feed during cold spells that last more than a couple of days,” Lemenager said. “Energy supplements could include corn, soybean hulls and wheat midds.” Lemenager said it takes about one pound of these high-energy feeds per animal per day for each 10-degree drop in wind chill. He also said feeding beef herds in the late afternoon or early evening increases the animals’ body heat going into the lowest night temperatures. Producers also should consider the amount of water cows have access to; Lemenager pointed out that insufficient water would decrease the amount of feed that cows would consume. Techniques that help reduce costs of managing cold stress include providing natural wind breaks such as tree lines and hills, or manmade structures. Lemenager suggests not housing cows in a closed barn during winter months, as the humidity in those conditions may lead to respiratory problems.

2015 Ohio Forage and Grasslands Conference

The Ohio Forages and Grasslands Council Annual Conference will be held February 6, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Ohio Department of Agriculture in Reynoldsburg, OH. The program focus is “Take the Next Step” in your forage management program. The featured speaker will be Dr. Ed Rayburn, Extension Specialist at West Virginia University, who will provide an introduction to pasture ecology and plant and animal responses to management. How to increase animal gain by optimizing the animal-plant interaction during grazing will be discussed by Dr. Anibal de Moraes, a professor of pasture ecology in southern Brazil, who will share research information on animal performance on Italian ryegrass. Dr. Rayburn and Dr. Moraes will provide pasture-based livestock producers with new ideas to step up their grazing management that can improve animal gains on pasture while increasing pasture production.

Best management practices for plastic wrapped bales will be another topic featured on the program. Dr. Rayburn will be sharing practices learned from a series of on-farm research projects and demonstrations with plastic-wrapped bales. In the afternoon, four producers will talk about their own dairy, beef, sheep and commercial silage storage operations and share lessons they have learned that will help others in their forage-based operations. Results from integrating sheep into grain crop rotation will be discussed by Dr. Jeff McCutcheon, Extension Educator from Morrow county. In addition, this year’s winners of the Ohio State Grazing Essay Contest and Ohio Forage and Grasslands Council Awards will be announced. Details of the program and a registration form can be found at http://beef.osu.edu/Flyers/OFGC15.pdf Print the form, fill it out and mail it to the address indicated by January 23, 2015.
