Season’s Greetings!
We are coming up on the holidays
which can be both an exciting and
stressful time of the year for many
reasons. As we reflect on the season,
it is easy to get caught up in the
shopping and must haves with all the
commercials constantly coming at
us. For many, the holidays are not as
happy as we would like or deserve
for a variety of reasons. In the middle
of the chaos, we forget to stop and
count our blessings. The one thing we
can all agree on is that this is a time
in our country when the one priceless
gift we must give to each other is
peace and tolerance. The recent is-
sues in Milwaukee and Ferguson, are
felt by all and are reminders that
while progress has been made over
time, we still have work to do. So as
we enter into the season of hope,
generosity and new beginnings, my
wish for all is that we continue to work
side by side to bring progress and har-
mony to our community.
May you have a safe, relaxing holiday
season and a Happy New Year!

WHAT’S TRENDING?
In today’s world of technology, you no longer have to
wonder how your student is doing in their classes, if they
came to school or what work they are missing as a result
of an absence. We have an answer for all of the above
questions and more! Skyward gradebook is a great start.
All students and families have access to check on their
student’s grades, attendance and behavior daily. We en-
courage our students to do this as well instead of asking
the teacher so that they develop the skill of monitoring
their own learning. With this current information, stu-
dents should not EVER be surprised about their grades
come report cards. This link can be found on our
Grandview website-www.seedsofhealth.org/Grandview.
Next we have teacher Weebly pages. If your student is
absent or has lost an assignment, logging into the teacher
Weebly pages not only will tell them what they missed
in class for that day, but also will have work attached for
them to download, print and complete. The weebly pag-
es are also found on our Grandview website.
To make it easier for students to work at home on work,
we now use Google Docs which takes away USB issues,
conversion from one system to another problems and al-
lows 24/7 access to any work that they have started in
school to be finished from any computer, anywhere.
Then-when finished they can email it to their teachers by
using their google email that they all have been given.
Our online credit recovery program, Compass, can be
done 24/7. If your student is home sick, have them log
on to their online class and work 3 or more hours. Not
only does this then remove an absence, it keeps them
moving forward in credit earning. Our belief is that even
when home sick, students can still complete work and do
more than nothing when it comes to school work. If stu-
dents take this opportunity seriously and log hours out-
side of the school day, they get to decide how many
credits they earn and how fast they earn them. While 3
credits are offered every trimester, students who take this

opportunity seriously can earn more than 3 credits every 12

If you have lost your calendars, want to contact teachers,
need to know how many credits are needed to graduate,
want to know if school is closed due to weather, or any oth-
er details about Grandview, you can find that either in your
handbook that was mailed home or again on our website. A
reminder-if MPS is closed due to weather-so is Grandview,
but we will still post on our website and facebook by 6:00
a.m.
You may have experienced our all call alert system called
Skylert. With this system, we not only have our attendance
calls go out daily, we also use it to make mass announce-
ments about events or changes that we want to make sure
our families are aware of such as conferences, testing, or
family nights.
Finally-a lot of activities, fieldtrips, guest speakers and pro-
jects go on daily at Grandview. Facebook is a great way to
see these things as we do weekly postings to celebrate the
amazing things that go on at Grandview. We are very proud
of our school and our students.
As you can see-we use technology to its fullest to keep our
families and students informed. With all these wonderful
resources in place, students have the ability to create a suc-
cessful outcome-graduation. But-as always, nothing replac-
es the old school face to face conferences, meetings or
phone calls. We welcome parent involvement and research
shows that this is a key factor in student success. However
when all is said and done, the only thing that we cannot an-
swer for is whether or not our students are committed to
working hard, attending and developing successful habits
that will help them to create the kind of future they envi-
sion. That choice rests solely in the hand of your student.

College and career activities happen every week
at Grandview. We have career speakers, visits to 2
& 4 year colleges, help for students to fill out FAFSA,
tours of area companies, JOG and online pro-
grams that help students to explore careers and
learn about their interests and skills. We know that
students need to be thinking and planning now so
that they are ready to step into the next phase of
their lives fully prepared.
Student Spotlight
Meet Deandre! He has been with us for
2 years and is very excited about gradu-
ating in June 2015. Deandre has finished
his required classes needed to gradu-
ate, but is preparing for college so is tak-
ing higher level classes so that he has
the skills needed to be successful. In ad-
dition to being strong in both academics
and attendance, Deandre is always will-
ing to lend a hand, offer a smile and
kind words, and to participate in our
community in many positive ways. Since
he came to us, Deandre has been fo-
cused on his career goal of becoming a
police officer. We know that not only will
he succeed, he will be a positive part of
our community.
Teacher Spotlight
Meet Margie Patterson! She is our math
teacher and advisor for Student Council.
Margie has been a teacher at
Grandview for 9 years helping students
to improve their math scores. As part of
our math department, Margie’s hard
work is seen in our rising MAP test scores
each year. Through the use of stations,
hands on activities, and real life prob-
lems, students are finding themselves en-
joying math for the first time. When not
working hard planning creative lessons,
Margie spends time with her husband,
Tim, and their 15 year old daughter, Ab-
by. Margie also enjoys running so it is not
unusual to see her crossing the finish line
in races held around the area. Thank
you Margie for all your long hours and
hard work!

Grandview was recognized
at the MPS Leadership
meeting by Superintendent
Driver for our state report
card. Our report card shows
that we are making satis-
factory progress in closing
the achievement gap.
When our students take the
strong focus on both credit
AND skill recovery seriously,
it works!! This is a huge cele-
bration for both staff and
students! We are very proud
of all the hard work that
happens every day here!
Rich’s class had a guest speaker,
Anita from Hands of Henna. Students
had an amazing hands-on learning
experience. Thank you Anita for
coming in to share your time and
knowledge regarding customs in In-
dia around marriage, food, clothing
and henna or Mehndi designs. Our
students enjoyed their time with Anita
and especially showing off the de-
signs she created for each of them.
