Jason’s Message Dear families and friends of Bell P-10 State School, Welcome to the start of Term 3 and I hope all staff and students had a good holiday and have come refreshed for this term. We have been instructed that we will continue to have the same drop off and pick up arrangements in place to start this term off which we will continue until we are told otherwise. This term we are able to hold parent teacher interviews as long as social distancing can occur. Primary teachers will organise interviews with their classes and a letter will come out for the secondary students this week. Even though last semester was a disrupted one, the students have done a fantastic job tracking with their reading improvement with the percentage of students already reaching end of year benchmarks improving from last year. This is a credit to everyone involved from the students themselves, to all staff and of course parents who have supported student learning in the first 5 weeks of Term 2. Have a good week, Jason. 90 Dennis Street BELL Q 4408 Email: [email protected] Web: https://bellss.eq.edu.au Main Phone (07) 4679 2333 Student Absences (07) 4679 2366 Fax (07) 4663 1249 Newsletter Term 3 Week 1, 15/07/2020 Date Claimers Term 3 July August 13th Year 7 Immunisations September 3rd Athletics day School Banking School banking will recommence this week. Skill Term 3, Week 1: “Have a GO”

Context All settings

Introduction Discuss with students what the term “Have a go” means. It is being willing to try which helps us learn. In what ways do we “Have a go” in class (e.g. raising our hands to answer a ques-tion – we may get it wrong, giving our work a go – we may not have the right answer etc.) How can having a go help us to learn? (e.g. We learn from our mistakes) When someone has a go and gets some-thing wrong how should we react?

How do people feel if you react in an in-appropriate manner? (e.g. laughing etc.)

Message from our local Policeman– Peter Horne Dear Burghers of Bell, My recent musings about traffic matters within the Bell township seem to have created some confusion about the speed zones. Let me clear this up for you. 60km zone Dennis Street, Ensor Street (Bunya Hwy) & Cedarvale Rd. All other streets are 50 km zones except of course for the 40 km zone outside the school between 7 - 9am & 2 - 4pm. Happy to discuss further if needed. Peter Horne

Preparing the Worm Farms On the last day of term 3 we prepared the Worm Farms for the holidays. All three worm farms were prepared. They were given lots of fruit/food scrapes and were also given a good coverage of shredded paper that had been soaked in water. Mrs McGuire brought in three clean hessian bags that were used as a bedding cover one for each worm farm. Mrs McGuire also visited the worm farms twice during the holiday break bringing in food scrapes and watering them. While she was attending the worm farms both watering systems were left on for an hour to keep the vegie garden and the fruit trees alive. During this time the fish were also checked and found to be having great time! Eco Schools Committee

From Orchard to Marmalade During the second week of the school holidays Mrs McGuire picked the first crop of cumquats from the School’s Orchard. She was taking the cumquats home to make them in to a jam namely ‘Cumquat Marmalade’. The tree produced about 700 grams of cumquats which is about 2½ cups of finely sliced fruit. This was enough fruit to make a small batch of Cumquat Marmalade. Once the fruit was finely sliced, let to stand in water overnight it was boiled the next day to make the jam. The end result was ten small jars of Cumquat Marmalade. Ag Science/Eco Schools Committee
