Halloween Activities Students and Staff had a blast dressing up on Friday, October 28th. Our after-school Halloween Dance and Haunted House proved to be amazing once

again! Great job, leadership class! Check out all the fun we had!

Meet some of our wacky teachers and students…

Come into our Haunted House…if you dare! Muahahaha!!!

    Let’s Meet Our New Staff

I am so excited to be part of John Burroughs Middle School! Before coming to John Burroughs, I

was a special education teacher at Palisades Charter High School. I have my credential in mild to

moderate disabilities from Cal State L.A. and am currently enrolled in their masters program. I am

originally from Ohio, but happily moved to California to attend Cal State Berkeley where I

majored in Japanese studies. I lived in Japan after college for a few years and speak conversational

Japanese. In my free time, I like taking photographs, reading good books, traveling, going to the

movies and hanging out with my lovely daughter and two crazy cats! (Paula Riff)

Hello, my name is Antonia Huizar. I am a new credentialed teacher from Cal State LA. However, I

have been working with children with moderate/ severe disabilities for over four years as an

assistant. My passion is working with kids. When I’m not working, I like to spend time with my

family. I visit my parents in Oklahoma, my cousins in Florida and North Carolina, or my uncles in

Indiana. I hope to one day take a road trip across the United States. But for now I am glad to be at

John Burroughs Middle School. I hope to learn a lot from all my surrounding coworkers and with time

make a difference in the education of my students.

The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is the nation’s premier

organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More

than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who demonstrate

excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and

character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the

organization since its beginning in 1929.

My name is Lorena Martinez and I have been a Library Aide for 11 years. I live in Palmdale,

California. I have two daughters. I was at a primary center school in Van Nuys for 9 years

and I was transferred over to Frank Del Olmo Elementary School. I enjoy walks, bike riding

and spending time with my family.

    National Junior Honor Society

    President: Sarah Jho

    Vice-President: Hannah Chi

    Secretary: Shadia Milon

    Advisor: Ms. R. Kim

    Faculty Members: Ms. S. Armendariz,

Ms. B. Pearson, Ms. D. Suppal, Ms. V. Quan,

    and Ms. F. Echevarria

My first name Bienvenido, is the Spanish word for welcome. The name has worked its way into my psyche,

so that I try to have a welcoming attitude towards those I meet. I hope others behave in the same manner.

When someone calls me “Bienvenido”, I try to deliver this verbal reply: “Thank you for welcoming me in

Spanish”. As I know, the closest Tagalog (Filipino) word to welcome is “Maligayang Bati”. The default

language for my name is obvious. I am the second child in a family of three boys. I came after my parents

waited for three years for a second baby. They were eager to have me earlier than later, and may have

chosen a name to signify their yearning. As a commentary to my name, I say that if my parents did not

expect me, my name would have been, “Abandonado”, or if I was an unwanted child, I would have been

called, “Escondido”. Check out the Spanish-English dictionary if you want to grasp the meaning of the

    joke. (Bienvenido Ferrer, Financial Manager)

Please welcome me into your world as I welcome you into mine, and as we strive to embellish the beautiful traditions of J.B. with those we may be able to deliver as uniquely our own – together or individually.

Hello, my name is Ms. Y Carrillo. I am a new teacher at Burroughs and am very happy to join

the Burroughs team. Although I am new to Burroughs, I have been teaching for nine years. I

am also the parent of a seventh grade student at an LAUSD school. I spend most of my time

doing what I love, teaching and caring for my students and my son. I also love reading,

    singing, and making people laugh.

Currently we are training Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday mornings

with temperatures in the 40s and 50s and even on weekends. Thanks to

Ms. Tongol, we have organized runs in Santa Monica, next to the Santa

Monica Peer and West LA College where our runs are averaging between 6

to 12 miles! We run at least 9 to 12 miles a week in preparation for the LA

marathon, so our students are very much prepared. We just completed a

half marathon 13.1 miles at the Pomona Fairplex "Holiday Run". Our next

event will be January 7th 2012 in Irvine, which is another half

marathon. After that we will be doing an 18 mile run at Hansen Damn

"Friendship Run", a month before the LA marathon. Because of our

students’ determination and hard work, they have been provided with a pair

of new Nike running shoes. With continued training and participation, they

will get a second pair in February. This shoe costs at minimum of a

hundred dollars. This shoe is currently not even sold at public stores, but

will be released in the summer of 2012. It's called the Pegasus 28+. World

class athletes run in these types of shoes and provide excellent comfort for

our students. These shoes can even track how long you have run, distance

and GPS using Nike monitors and/or using the IPhone application in conjunction with Nike apparel. Our students work hard so they only

deserve the best! Good job SRLA runners! If you know who they are,

encourage them and support their efforts, as our training is becoming more

    and more rigorous.

    Thank you!

A special thanks to LAUSD’s Youth Services and

the Korean Cultural Center for sponsoring the Tae

Kwon Do program here at John Burroughs Middle

School. Our students did a fabulous job at a

demonstration held at Fairfax High School in

    November. Go Bears!

Our November 29th, Anti-Bully Day was launched with all our students showing

their pride and dedication in sending a message out that we will not tolerate

bullying on our campus. Students were each given a personalized John Burroughs

Middle School Anti-Bullying T-shirt. We had Los Angeles Councilmember, Tom

LaBonge, Los Angeles Police Officers, Los Angeles School Police Officers, and

other representatives speak to our students regarding the negative ramifications of

bullying. Our JB staff participated in a roll play that sent out a

    message…“Bullying is NOT cool!”

That’s why at JB we believe in the 3 Bs

Data Moving onward and upward… Stakeholders

at John Burroughs know what it takes to be

top notch. Teachers use data to drive

    instruction, Parents support education at

home, and Students work hard daily and

    strive towards academic excellence.

Together as a team, we can reach our API

    Magnet/SAS Faire

John Burroughs’ Magnet/SAS programs hosted the High School Magnet/SAS Faire this past November, in which 19 of our local schools, and 1 Christian Charter School were in attendance. Each school was given the opportunity provided information to over 150 of our local parents and students who are preparing to make the move to high school.

The Local District 3 Magnet/SAS Faire, which was held at Johnny Cochran Middle School in December, was another great event in which we had the honor of introducing John Burroughs. Ms. Pearson, Mrs. Echevarria and Dr. Martinez met with over 80 prospective parents and students and highlighted all the wonderful events we offer all the students who attend JB.

Arabian Bazaar The 7th grade Magnet team (Ms. Abejero, Ms. Wi, Ms. Davidson, and Ms. Corona) held an Arabian

Bazaar recreating an Arabian market place. This was an interdisciplinary project in which

students created a booth where they sold various items: cultural food, household games, services,

and Arabian artifacts. Students were required to create a business plan and pay for their rent and

utilities with the money they made. Business seemed to be doing very well as many of items were

in high demand. Quite a successful event!

    .

Winter Concert Students in Mr. Dent’s orchestra played holiday

songs filling the auditorium with festive music and

holiday cheer. The beautiful decorations were

created by Ms. Weathersby’s stage design students.

    A phenomenal job by all!
