Mystery is the unknown. Something that implies a question and incites a questioning from each that encounters it. This project consists of a series of subtle interventions within the existing fabric of Perth city that encourage the public to encounter a range of works from various Biological Artists. Through the use of restricted vision, and restricted access to the artwork; the occupant is provoked into engaging with the art and in turn their surrounding environment.
HONOURS DISSERTATIONPERTH CITYMYSTERY
“The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer marvel, no longer wonder, is as good as dead, and his eyes are dimmed.”
Albert Einstein

This spa retreat is not about beauty, but a total embodied experience for the occupant and reconnection between mind and body. Inspiration of form was taken from the weir itself utilising this as spatial divider, seating, control for natural light and ventilation, and disabled access within it. The space allows for nude bathing
“There is a dualistic attitude towards the human body in Western culture. It is obsessively aestheticised and seen as separate from intelligence or the mind.”Juhani Pallasmaa | The Thinking Hand

This example of adaptive reuse features a commercial tenancy for a design firm and a residential space for a small family. The design incorporates a layer of laser cut metal throughout the building adding depth, indicating function, private/privacy spaces and partially obscuring heritage features to peak curiosity for the occupants and help create a public identity for the commercial spaces.

“Our faculty of judgement is incomplete without the experience of crossing through space [...] only the crisscrossing of the body through space joins space, mind, body and eye.”Steven Holl | Parallax
This project took inspiration from the geometry of the site that changes form as the occupant moves through the space and also how the building frames itself. The spatial planning grouped separate departments and functional shared areas within each other; situating areas of transit between to activate the spaces via the occupant’s movements allowing for both separation and connection when required.

“The idea of transit or passage (in-betweeness) from one dimension to another.”Anish Kapoor
This project worked in conjunction with the previous, utilising the same site and initial photo study of Curtin Architecture & Planning building. This wall mounted light was designed as an indicator for a gallery space that was situated beyond the wall and resulted in a 1:1 prototype.
