Elmer is coming to Maidstone!A spectacular free public art installation is coming to Maidstone in the summer of 2020.

Heart of Kent Hospice, working in partnership with Wild in Art, the UK’s leader in the production of spectacular mass-market, public art events and Andersen Press, a leading independent children’s publisher, is delighted to be bringing David McKee’s popular children’s character Elmer, to life.

From mid-June to end of August 2020 a herd of fabulously colourful and unique elephant sculptures will take visitors and residents on a trail around the beautiful County town of Maidstone. The trail will incorporate Maidstone’s vibrant town centre, the stunning Maidstone River Park and some popular landmarks.

This mass-participation family event will feature up to 50 individually-designed large Elmer sculptures. Herds of baby Elmers will accompany the main trail. The baby sculptures will be adopted, designed and decorated by schools as part of Elmer’s Big Heart of Kent Parade learning programme.

The trail will bring together businesses and creative sectors with local schools and communities, showcasing the rich, diverse cultural offering our region has, in support of Heart of Kent Hospice.

It will be a highlight in the the Maidstone 2020 calendar, celebrating all that our town has to offer.

Learning programme – get involved! We invite your school to be inspired, get creative and join in with the most exciting art event to take place across Maidstone. Each participating school that raises a minimum of £750 for the Hospice can adopt a blank baby Elmer sculpture to design and decorate, accompanied by a full curriculum-linked learning pack.

The learning pack puts creativity at the heart of study and is designed to complement key stage specific teaching, with classroom guides and lesson plans for numerous subjects including english, literacy and PSHE.

Through summer 2020, the herds of baby Elmers will be exhibited in cultural venues for the duration of the trail. They will complement and add real value to the main Elmer trail, by showcasing creativity and raising the aspirations of young people in our region, before being returned to schools for them to keep as a lasting legacy.

We are delighted that distinguished local artist, author and humourist Graham Clarke is the artistic patron of Elmer’s Big Heart of Kent Parade, endorsing the creative integrity of this public art trail. We are hoping that artists selected to decorate the large Elmer sculptures will also be able to visit schools to work with young people to support their design and creativity.

Why Elmer?Elmer was chosen for a number of reasons:• Having sold over 10 million copies worldwide, Elmer is a much loved character

• Elmer stands out from the herd and is the ambassador of friendship and celebrating difference, things we strive to teach children as they grow older. The stories explore different concepts relating to diversity and resonate with children and families alike; in the end it’s best to show your true colours

• We all know that elephants never forget and there is a poignant connection to Heart of Kent Hospice, our Hospice is a place where memories are made and where many people return to remember their loved ones

• Elmer’s Big Heart of Kent Parade will be transformational for Heart of Kent Hospice, and for Maidstone. Similar art trails in other areas have increased civic pride, boosted the local economy and increased the health and wellbeing of the local population

“ It was wonderful to take part in a whole school project which combined many areas of the curriculum in one package. The response of the children was phenomenal! ”St Margaret Mary’s RC Primary, Manchester

“ We used the sculpture as a stimulus for curriculum development work that involved the whole school community, including parents. So many areas of the curriculum have been enhanced including art, drama, science and geography – a multitude of things developed from having the sculpture in our school. We were proud to be part of the project and it was fantastic for the children to see their sculpture on display in the city.”Nicola Cushion.
