COURSE DESCRIPTION The purpose of this national inaugural conference, JOINING FORCES TO RESTORE LIVES: Nursing Education and Research in Veterans Health, is to support a comprehensive national initiative to include education about issues specific to veteran’s health and advances in research into the nursing curriculum to better prepare nurses to care for military veterans and their families. The dynamic role of nursing professionals spanning nursing executives, scientists, researchers, educators, advanced practice nurses and registered nurses will engage in an educational forum specifically designed to provide current relevant core content to support veterans returning from war or deployment which face a variety of physical and psychological health care needs including: traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, suicidal ideation, homelessness, sexual trauma and substance abuse. PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE OR SKILL Prerequisites not required. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this national conference and educational activity, the participant will be able to: • Describe the physical and psychological health issues of military veterans and their families • Identify best available evidenced based practice curriculum to integrate veterans health into curricula at the undergraduate and graduate levels of nursing education • Identify and evaluate current, relevant and focused nursing research available to integrate new knowledge of veterans health into current professional nursing practice • Identify and explore best practices of innovative strategies for integration of veterans health into undergraduate and graduate nursing education • Describe national pioneering research including for new treatments in PTSD, sexual trauma and nurse scientists as leaders in veterans health • Evaluate the role of the professional nurse in supporting veterans health, education and research TARGET AUDIENCE This conference is designed to meet the educational needs of a targeted audience spanning global nursing executives, scientists, faculty, researchers, educators, advanced practice nurses and registered nurses in supporting veterans health education and research. ACCREDITATION USF Health is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Upon successful completion of this continuing nursing education activity, 6.5 contact hours will be awarded to the participant. As Deputy Chief Nursing Officer, he assists with the development, implementation and evaluation of national policy and strategic planning activities that support the missions of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA): clinical care, education, research and backup to the Department of Defense and emergency preparedness. Dr. Harris has an extensive background in nursing management and education, a published author, and consultant. He is also a Professor of Nursing at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and maintains a practice as a mental health provider.
