Foothills Animal Shelter After reporting the need for a decent animal shelter for seven

years, City and Mountain Views is celebrating the new 30,000 sq. ft. animal shelter at the JeffCo Fairgrounds. Views began reporting the need for a decent animal shelter in 2003 and documented the “un-derfunded” JeffCo shelter by comparing it with seven others in the metro area in 2005. Views kept reporting the embarrassing situation until 2007 when the issue was mentioned in some JeffCo weeklies. Finally the new Foothills Animal Shelter at the JeffCo Fairgrounds was completed in August 2010! The $9.7 million facility is twice the size of the 1966 cement block dog pound and a thousand times more efficient and beneficial for abandoned and lost pets. The staff will care for nearly 10,000 animals annually at this “open admissions” (no animal is turned away) facility.

FAS offers excellent ventilation and soundproofing to reduce stress, especially for dogs. Cats have space to climb and play in “colony” rooms. There is a comfortable “holding” area and a community room is available for education, training and public

gatherings. The FAS staff and volunteers are carrying out the mission to reunite lost pets with their families, adopt homeless pets into loving homes, and educate for responsible pet ownership and animal welfare. www.FoothillsAnimalShelter.org

Heather Cameron, Ex. Dir. Foothills Animal Shelter

Heather Cameron was the Project Director for the Metro Crisis Triage Project at Mental Health America of Colorado (MHAC) where she managed all aspects of the seven-county, health care initiative, including system design, business planning, partnership relations, fund raising and board development. Under Heather’s leadership, the Triage Project became “Metro Crisis Services, Inc.”—incorporated as a new nonprofit entity, gaining over $3.5 million in grants and pledges, securing its board of direc-tors and executive leader-ship, and launching the first phase of the business plan: the 24/7 Crisis Line for metro Denver. Prior to managing MHAC, Heather was the Colorado Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) Manager, working for the state’s Department of Public Safety. Before that, she was Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Colorado. She is excited to join the team at Foothills Animal Shelter as their new Executive Director.

JeffCo’s Best High SchoolsLakewood, Evergreen, Conifer and D’Evelyn are among 6% of

27,000 schools included with Newsweek’s 2010 list of America’s Best High Schools. JeffCo is fifth out of the nation’s 50 largest school districts for highest graduation rates!

JeffCo Boys & Girls Club A million dollars was raised from March to July, 2010 to fund the

JeffCo branch at O’Connell Middle School, 1275 S. Teller St., in a redevelopment area of Lakewood. Community leaders began to explore solutions to a growing poverty rate in 2007. JeffCo Public School District and Boys & Girls Clubs formed a partnership for use of the facility from 3:15 to 8:00 p.m. during the school year, and 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. during the summer. In addition to 500 students at O’Conn.ell, an estimated 100 children and teens are served by the club. www.BGCmd.org/jeffco

Vote NO on numbers, YES on lettersEditorial Opinion

Amendments 60, 61, and 101 would destroy Colorado’s economy. All chambers of commerce, community service clubs, government agencies, League of Women Voters, and Denver Post recommend voting NO. Visit www.DontHurtColorado.com for more information. Amendment 62 would control the physi-cal body of every female and Amendment 63 is about health care choice, which already exists.

Amendment P is about Games of Chance; Amendment Q would permit temporary location of the State Govern-

ment during an emergency; and Amendment R is about uniform taxation exemptions. When judges are on the ballot, don’t skip them. Be informed. Get simple, impartial, nonpartisan

facts at www.KnowYourJudge.com We are all sick and tired of the bizarre propaganda about candidates. Democracy is not a spectator sport, so be very careful with your choices! We recommend choosing candidates with compassion in 2010.

Evergreen artist Dennie Ibbotson’s love of natural life is reflected in his woodcarvings. One of the original 1969 Woodstock attendees, Dennie’s free-spirited life is as colorful as his art pieces. “I get my inspiration from where I live,” said Ibbotson who once lived in a tee-pee for four years. For the past 35 years Dennie has lived off of Upper Bear Creek in Evergreen with 550,000 square miles of elk refuge and wilderness just a stone’s throw from his front door. Ninety percent of his home studio projects (signs, mantels, memorials, custom cabinetry) are doors portraying the beauty of Colorado’s mountains, wildlife, and history.

Dennie Ibottson has received many design awards and media attention on NBC, ABC, and PBS. Included among his clients are country music star Willie Nelson and actor Robert Redford, as well as corporate notables from Coors, Anheuser-Busch, and Merrill Lynch. Artists With Altitude 25918 Genesee Trl. Rd., Golden 80401 • www.ArtistsWithAltitude.com

Several Evergreen female artists began meeting in 2005 to explore establishing a co-op, which finally became reality in September, 2010. They took classes and enjoyed field trips together. The artists work in oil, pastel, water color, acrylic, mixed media, clay, jewelry and fiber art and have participated in various galleries and shows in Evergreen and the metro area. Seventeen artists exhibit their work at Artists With Altitude gallery adjacent to the Christies event center at Genesee Town Center, south of I-70 Exit 254.

Jane Christie Excellent artist… always learning

“I take at least one workshop a year with someone I admire. I am always learning,” says Jane. She has been an active artist most of her life beginning as a child at the Atlanta Museum of Art and later at University of Georgia. Her love affair with painting has generated many awards and invitations, including a massive banner acquired by Golden Urban Renewal Authority that hangs above a parking lot next to another created by Hal Shelton at 12th and Jackson. Many of her paintings have been selected as Best of Show at Foothills Art Center, Rotary Gallery, Center for the Arts Evergreen and many more. www.JaneChristieArt.com

Artists With Altitude are Ann Caffrey, Carolyn Campbell, Jane Christie, Chris Orlikowski, Gail Grasier, Debbie Jaggers, Debbie Kerr, Nancy Larner, Laura Mehmert, Mary Jo Nelson, Joan Owens, Carolyn Quan and Eunice Weir.

Planning for a Lakewood cultural center began in 1979 and artists established the non-profit Lakewood Arts Council in 1988. LAC encompasses all the arts: theatre, music, dance, visual arts and literature and support numerous events, performances, exhibits, concerts, workshops and special programs. They work from a strong volunteer base and depend on grants and membership dues to

conduct business. They opened the South Union Gallery (which has become Lakewood Arts Council’s Community Art Center and Gallery) as a place to learn, exhibit and sell their work. There are now 28 artist members teaching classes and exhibiting their work for sale at the gallery. Thanks to Barbara Tobiska for starting it all!

The artist owners/operators of Shadow Mountain Gallery are celebrating their 20th Anniversary. They began in 1990 next to the historic yellow barn in Conifer and relocated to the Adobe Creek Artists Center in Kittredge in 1995. Their final move in 2004 was to downtown Evergreen’s “Main Street.” Many of the present 28 artists have won awards in local, state, regional and national juried art competitions and exhibitions.

The 2010 artists are Jane Albright, Mchelene Berkey, Tab Berkey, Ann Bunn, Tom Cappas, Agnete Cohen, Rita Collette, Gale Collins, Joan Crosse, Don Fairchild, Michael Felix, Anita Garfein, JD Hannah, Richard Hawley, Colleen Heinemann, Karla Horst, Barbara Houdeshell, Shawn Janecek, Aoe Kowalchuk, David Lisman, Gayle MacDougall, Michaela May, Annie McInnis, Kim Stagg, Jackie Taylor, Paul Thisted, Gary White, Tim Young.
