This is our third week of hearing from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Romans. We will continue with Romans for eight more weeks.
In two short verses, Paul gives us a lesson on prayer this Sunday. When we face weakness, which is for Paul the human propensity to choose to live according to the flesh rather than according to the Spirit, the Spirit will come to our aid.
Recall in the passage from Romans proclaimed last Sunday that creation and the children of God were both groaning as they awaited redemption. In today’s passage, the Spirit comes to our assistance in prayer with “inexpressible groaning.” The Greek word used by Paul suggests that the Spirit goes above and beyond in pleading with God on our behalf.
The Spirit, in effect, understands and empathizes with our groanings to the extent that the spirit, too, groans. Through the Spirit’s own groanings, our desires are brought to God. When our hope is not enough, the Spirit helps us wait patiently for that new day when our sufferings will be replaced by the glory of the Resurrection.
Paul’s lesson on prayer not only teaches us that the Spirit intercedes for us, but how the Spirit does so. The communion of the Spirit with God – the one who searches hearts (1 Kings 8:39; Psalm 7:11;17:3; 139:1) – is so deep that God knows the intentions of the Spirit even before he intercedes for us. The Spirit’s intercession follow God’s plan of salvation.
The Spirit draws us into communion with God because the Spirit himself longs with us for the day when we will know the redemption of our bodies and everything will be accomplished according to God’s will for those who are his “holy ones.”

A Summer of Active Learning and Adventure at SLEMS By: Kelly Flores
Saint Lawrence Elementary and Middle School has implemented a new and exciting summer school program. Created and directed by Mr. Procaccio and Mrs. Fleming, and supported by an energetic staff, the atmosphere on the SLEMS campus is one of happiness, acceptance and personal growth. The half day schedule designed to truly challenge each student in all areas of academic and social growth, is filled with 30 minute bursts of fresh curriculum. Core subjects are surrounded by wacky science, fitness fun, scrapbooking, cultural studies and more! All summer school students enrolled from entering 1st grade to entering 8th grade are encouraged and supported as they venture through many different skillsets in the morning hours. Another special change to the Saint Lawrence Elementary and Middle School summer program, is the integration of a dual immersion Jumpstart to Kindergarten curriculum. Designed by Mrs. Flores, the youngest learners on campus are surrounded by English and Spanish music, dance, phonics and math as they are spoken to and responding in the Spanish language. The new dual immersion program is a stepping stone toward a fresh approach of integrating the Hispanic culture and language, into the future of SLEMS. Summer school is not the only lively part of the Saint Lawrence campus this summer. The annual Summer Camp is in full bloom and filled with alumni students on the staff team, directed by Mrs. Herbelin. The camper’s days are filled with staff-led activities, sports, games and crafts during the morning hours, and the all-time favorite free swim in the afternoon. All of the summer camp activities are age appropriate, including a less than 2ft pool for the youngest swimmers present. One special highlight of the summer camp program are the field trip adventures. From touring the Tech Museum in San Jose, to scoring a hole-in-one at Golfland, these experiences are safe and exciting for both campers and staff alike! Another highlight is the fresh new Teen center and Teen camp. The new location, right next to the sparkling pool, is fun and spacious. The teen campers are encouraged and supported as they play with the latest technology, create and share memories and actively participate in cooking and crafting lessons. It is safe to say that life at SLEMS is booming this summer, and the community is truly making the most of the beautiful summer weather on the spacious and active Saint Lawrence campus!

PALABRA QUE DA VIDA:
Este domingo, Jesús nos cuenta una parábola relacionada con el mundo de la Agricultura. En este caso, del hombre que tenía un campo, que había sembrado y cuidado y un enemigo suyo por la noche sembró cizaña.
La cizaña es una hierba mala que crece y al principio se disimula, pero al momento de florecer y dar frutos se da uno cuenta que está estropeando la cosecha.
Enseñanza: Todos nosotros somos el campo en el que Cristo ha sembrado la buena semilla de su palabra, de su mensaje, pero también somos el campo en el cual el maligno ha sembrado la mala semilla del pecado. Por lo que en cada uno de nosotros hay trigo y hay cizaña. ¡En todos! No hay personas malísimas que no tienen nada bueno, o personas buenísimas, que no tienen ni siquiera tentaciones, pues excepto la Virgen María, todos somos pecadores.
Primera lección: Humildad. Hay que reconocer que en mi hay trigo, ¡cosas buenas! Y en mi hay cizaña, ¡cosas malas!
El hombre quedó dañado por el pecado, pero no tan profundamente que no sea capaz de hacer el bien. ¡Con la gracia de Dios el hombre puede hacer el bien y evitar el mal!
Tenemos que luchar para que la cizaña disminuya y crezca el trigo. Es decir, tenemos que luchar cada uno de nosotros para que Dios pueda trabajar y sacar de nosotros el máximo resultado posible.
Segunda lección: ¡No te rindas nunca! Si te parece que no tienes remedio; que te confiesas siempre de lo mismo y que es inútil, porque vuelves a cometer los mismos errores, y te cansas y dices: ¡Ya no vale la pena seguir! ¿Para qué luchar? ¡No tiene caso seguir! Entonces ese es el principio del fin.
Tenemos que imitar la paciencia de Dios. ¡Aprovecha el tiempo de salvación que Dios te da mientras vives, para luchar! Y la mejor manera de luchar es: El Examen de Conciencia y la Confesión. ¡Aunque parezca que no da ningún resultado y que siempre nos estamos confesando de lo mismo! ¡Cuando dejamos de luchar es cuando nos echamos a perder! Por lo tanto: Confesión, volver a empezar y paciencia, para que con el tiempo la gracia de Dios pueda lograr en nosotros los mejores frutos.
