Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time People – women and men – who are trying to cope with the incessant demands of both raising a family and earning an income can be mightily offended by the story of Martha and Mary. Being under relentless siege day after day makes quiet contemplation time seem like a fantasy, even a selfish indulgence. Perhaps we could say that Catch 22 is in operation also. To approach a gospel story like this with an open mind, receptive to the wisdom it might offer, takes time! To be caught up in a never-ending cycle of activity, allowing ourselves to be stressed to the limit, is asking for trouble. Never to step back and reflect on what we’re investing all our energy in and why, condemns us to a perpetual treadmill. Are we allowing ourselves to be driven by status envy? Are we allowing ourselves to be entertained to death? More and more people are writing about the changes they have had to make in their lives because of loss, or aging, or life- threatening illness. So many of them are saying they had their priorities wrong. They didn’t take time to relish the blessings that money can’t buy. They weren’t wise enough to cherish love and friendship. They had so many experiences but missed the meaning. Will we? . You are warmly invited to join fellow Parishioners in the celebration of this special occasion. Our special guest, The Very Rev. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord’s feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by my myself? Please tell her to help me.’ But the Lord answered, ‘Martha, Martha,’ he said, ‘you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her.’ ______________________________________________________

Commentary on the Gospel This short episode, unique to Luke, has had a chequered history. At first blush it is a benign and appealing story involving two sisters, the hospitality of their house, and the figure of Jesus. But there was a time when it was interpreted as establishing the superiority of the contemplative life (represented by Mary) over the active life (represented by Martha). Contemporary scholars, especially feminist scholars, differ as to whether the story presents Mary as a champion of women because she is commended for assuming the hitherto male role of a rabbi’s disciple or whether Jesus’ rebuke to Martha only reinforces the traditional role of women as domestic servants. The fact there is no one agreed interpretation suggests that often enough the word of God does not offer clear answers to our questions or solutions to our problems. Instead the role of the word is to provoke us to think about our customary patterns of feeling, thinking and acting so that we may make choices that are informed and wise. That said, this gospel may be understood in a common-sense way. Mary is praised for offering more fundamental hospitality than Martha – that of attentiveness to their guest and his wishes. Martha is rebuked for going overboard with the provision of excessive food instead of preparing something simple and thus being free to attend to the person of Jesus.
