Men’s Club Softball Update The men played a doubleheader last week to make up for the rainout, and it rained again. But with what they would call steely resolve (their wives think they’re just foolish), they played anyway and won both games, 20-10 vs. previously undefeated OLG White, 16-6 vs. St. Patrick’s. Pat Wilkes pitched the win in both games and reached base five out of six times, but the MVP goes to our fans: Francis and Alice Tangney, Everett and Mary Ellen Ferrian,

Betty Kuenzli and Rachel Wilkes, for showing up in their rain gear to cheer us on. You’re the best!

Next game: Monday, July 21, 7:15pm vs. St. Bart’s Blue at the OLG softball field.

Parish News

Dear Parishioners, In this weekend’s gospel, we hear that there are weeds among the good wheat that the master had planted. The slaves of that master ask him if he wants them to go out into the field and pull up the weeds that his enemy had planted. The master responds that if they go out and try to uproot the weeds, they might unwittingly pull up the wheat as well, which is unacceptable to the master. He tells them to wait, and that they will be separated out later, after the harvest. God does not leave it up to us to separate the weeds from the wheat. He knows we are not capable of such discernment. This parable teaches us something about our heavenly Father’s plan, and consequently something about ourselves. Our Father loves His children so much that, for their sake, He withholds His judgment on those who do evil and who cause others to do evil. He allows them to continue in their ways so that His children are not damaged or destroyed. But there seems to be a contradiction there. If He loves His children so much, why would He permit others to try to lead them astray, to commit evil? The answer is because we are all God’s children, even those who commit evil and lead others to do the same. We, in our finite wisdom, think it would be better to uproot those who do evil in order to save the rest. But the problem with that is: who would be left? Who among us would dare say they have not needed God’s mercy and forgiveness for committing some evil? Who would dare say they have never led others to commit sin, through their actions or inaction? God, in His infinite love and wisdom, knows that anyone can be converted, that we can change from being weeds to wheat. He desires that we all be saved, that none of us be lost to the threshing floor, and so He actively works in our lives to bring us back to Him. So we must not dare to judge each other, for we do not know what is in the hearts of others, we cannot tell the wheat from the weeds, we do not know how God is working in their hearts. Now, this is a far cry from, “I’m ok, you’re ok, let others do what they want to do as long as it doesn’t affect me.” We do not judge each other, but we do and we must judge right from wrong, good from evil. There are intrinsically evil acts, and we must be a witness to this truth and declare them as such. Just as with the parable of the sower we heard last week, this parable forces us to ask ourselves a question: which one are we? Are we among the children of God who are striving to do His will and repenting when we fail? Or are we evildoers, content with our sin and trying to lead others to sin with us so that we will feel more comfortable with what we are doing? Jesus does not ask us this question to point fingers, to condemn us. He asks it to wake us up if we don’t like the answer we come up with. We are capable of change, but we must do so before it is too late and the time for the harvest has arrived. -Fr. Liekhus

STEWARDS GOOD SEEDS “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field…He who sows

good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom.”-MATTHEW 13:24B, 37B-38A

As children of God, we are all “good seeds,” blessed by God with the potential to accomplish much good in the world. We fulfill God’s plan when we share our talents and our financial gifts to help build God’s kingdom on earth. Through our Stewardship we sow “good seeds” on earth to ultimately help each other get to Heaven!

CALLING FORTH OF CATECHISTS – DOES THE PRESCHOOL AGE-GROUP APPEAL TO YOU? [It’s obvious that catechists appeal to Preschoolers.]

Openings for CATECHISTS: Grades 1, 5 and EDGE (Grades 6, 7 & 8 - Team catechists for all 3 grades together). For CATECHIST ASSISTANTS: At all grade levels, Preschool through Confirmation and Youth Group (in order to ensure that we have two adults in each classroom.) For CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD: A few more people would make the rotation so much easier. So if you sense that you (or someone you know) is being called by God to share your/their faith with young people, I’d be most happy to discuss the possibility of being a catechist or a catechist assistant in next fall’s Faith Formation program or for Sunday morning’s Preschool Program or Children Liturgy of the Word. Thanks. Chuck Romportl,

(952) 540-4762 or [email protected].

FAITH FORMATION FOR NEXT FALL The proposed calendar for next year, plus the registration forms can be found at the church entrances or on the parish website.
