Pastoral Reflection Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

We all like to be right about what we preach and what we teach on a daily basis. It feels good to be heard and understood and to have family, friends and companions who believe in what we believe. In our own minds and hearts, we might possible categorize people into groups. These people believe this way. These people believe that way. I'm more like these people...less like "those" people. In a day and age, particularly in this country, that values freedom of expression and all sorts of freedoms, we might become very judgmental of the world and the people that God created. We think what we believe is true. What we believe will help the world. What we understand and how we view things that if everyone was more like us, the world would be a better place. That somehow God thinks our opinions on certain subjects is the same as His. We are on the same plane as God in our way of thinking and understanding. That the moral high ground is the way to go. (which it is...but) We might justify our judgmental feelings toward others by thinking we are right and they are wrong. We categorize. We stigmatize. We demean them or praise them in our thoughts and in the things that we say. We might even praise ourselves for thinking we are better than "them." Sometimes we can be morally right and totally wrong in our thoughts and even our actions. This is the definition of someone who has become smug and self-righteous. As priests, we hear all kinds of opinions and thoughts. These days, I'm wondering if it really isn't better not to form opinions on anything. Not to trust in my own understandings and just let it go and trust in God. It has been so freeing and like a dark veil has lifted that I want to share this with the world. Listen to people. Love them. Understand them. Choose love over hatred. We can only do this if we do not stigmatize folks into groups, judge them as somehow less than ourselves. We are all creations of God existing in a very fallen world. A world right now that is hurting and in need of prayer and God's love, light, and grace. There has been so much chaos in the world down to our own neighborhoods. It is best to focus on Christ and loving everyone who comes into contact with us. Brushing off thoughts of superiority and/or even fear in these days of the virus and riots. We must avoid the sin of self-righteousness. Of thinking our thoughts are superior to others. Of shoving those thoughts into the ears and minds of others. If we teach, we must teach gently and with the love of Christ. Never for personal gain or even for validation. What we do...we must do for Christ! May God help all of us recover from this interesting year and keep us free as far as it is humanly possible from the sting of sin and especially from self-righteousness and fear. - Fr. Benjamin

President’s Column Thank you all for your input these last number of months in managing COVID-19 within our parish. From the beginning, our church’s leadership, staff, and clergy have received and poured over a multitude of safety guidelines – sent out by the Center for Disease Control, the State, and the City, not to mention from our own parishioners (including an epidemiologist and frontline healthcare workers). Furthermore, we also received safety guidelines from our Diocese, as well as the Synod of Bishops. When to come, how many, where to stand, where to sit, how to space, windows open, no fans…We’ve even read about keeping facial hair trimmed - for best mask effectiveness. The vast amount of “detailed” information received and reviewed has been literally exhausting at times – but lovingly submitted and reviewed – knowing that you all care for the safety of our parishioners, our clergy and our family members. With that, and as a reminder, St. Mary’s may at times exercise stricter safety guidelines than required by our State and City. In looking forward – I’m certain I’m not the only one who longs to see the day when the only time we hear the term “Social Distancing” – will come from a documentary on “The History Channel”. We at least have our summer to look forward to. We welcome our new Choir Director (Zachariah Mandell), who starts the beginning of July. On behalf of St. Mary’s, a very heartfelt “Thank You”, to Mark Wesche (and his whole family) who played a large role in filling the void through this search, through Lent and Pascha, and with the added pandemic challenge. Another big item happening this summer will be the repair work on the East side of the Cathedral. St. Mary’s Property Management Committee team, led by John Jurichko and Vlad Scheglowski, procured (3) bids for the immediate repair of the east parapet wall, and subsequent north, west and south walls to be done as a 2nd phase. They analyzed the bids and made their recommendation to the Board, who likewise reviewed the contract bids, and approved their recommendation. With that, we can expect work to begin sometime early July, and be completed around mid-August. Again, a big “Thank You” to John and Vlad for working with the contractors in getting us to this key point – and to all of you, for your continued donations and support toward this critical repair work needed – in protecting the structural integrity of our Cathedral. Enjoy your summer everyone! God Bless, Michael Kokosh, St. Mary’s Church Board President

Reservations at the Cathedral and Cemetery Dear St. Mary's Cathedral Community, It is now possible to reserve space for Sunday liturgies at both the Cathedral and the Annunciation Chapel at the cemetery. Thank God! And thank you for your patience, and for our wonderful volunteers - singers, service attendants, bell-ringers, door-keepers, cleaners...It is because of your good-will and your prayers that, with God's help and the intercessions of the Mother of God and all the saints, we are able to move forward. Please only make one reservation per venue per month to allow as many parishioners as possible to participate in the Sunday liturgies. If you have family or friends without internet access, please contact Fr. Andrew or Fr. Benjamin to make reservations. Here are the links: Annunciation Chapel (Cemetery) https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0D49A8AC2EA0F58-annunciation Cathedral https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0D49A8AC2EA0F58-cathedral We are not requiring reservations for weekday services because only a small number of people attend these. Thus parishioners are able to attend weekday and Saturday Vespers, and weekday liturgies, following the usual protocols for attending church and observing social distancing.

Choir Notes

by Zachariah Mandell

Christ is in our midst! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Zachariah Mandell – Zach is fine! – and it is with great joy that I join your community here at St. Mary’s as the choir director. I thank you all for your patience and help as I have made this transition. Minneapolis is a long way from Pennsylvania, and there has been this little thing called COVID—maybe you’ve heard of it—that has created some complications. By the grace of God, I am here and more than ready to enter into the worshipping life and community of the Orthodox Church with you all. I look forward to getting to know you, and will give you a little bit of a head start here, with a little bit about me… I grew up in rural, central Pennsylvania, so you know what that means: Pittsburgh Steelers fan, of course. I hope there’s no bad blood from Super Bowl IX still lingering—I pray we can overcome. Anyway…I grew up in an Orthodox family, my parents, a younger brother, and a younger sister; in addition, one of my grandfathers and a few of my uncles are priests. Some of my earliest memories (other than buying Special Edition Remastered Star Wars Trilogy on VHS in 1995) are being in the choir loft with my dad as he directed services. Church music, and music in general, is big in my family. Back at my home parish, St. Michael’s in Irvona, PA (I’m sure you’ve heard of it—the town has one whole stop-light!), my family essentially is the choir. Both of my parents studied music, my dad and brother are music teachers, and in high school every conceivable band and choir (along with a few sports in which I was highly mediocre) filled up my extracurriculars. In spite of all the music, and the fact that I went to Pennsylvania State University (strike two?) mostly for the opportunity to play trombone in their marching band, for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to study Classics. Forgive the self-deprecating humor, I really do have a deep love for Greek and Latin Language and Literature. I fell in love with Homer and that was it—anyone want to read some together sometime? Upon graduating, I decided to continue upon that highly utilitarian path by going to grad school in Buffalo, NY, pursuing a PhD in Classics. Nevertheless, my passion for music, liturgical music in particular, was always a constant. Through college and grad school, I always sang in church choirs, and in each place ended up one way or the other directing the choir. The combination of my love for studying ancient languages and engaging with liturgical music (along with a number of other long-winded experiences) was significant in turning me toward seminary. Thus, after three years and the acquisition of my MA in Classics, I moved across New York to attend St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary. At St. Vladimir’s, these two areas of interest came together for me, along with the feeling that God was calling me to serve his Church, one way or

another. I was able to continue to grow as a musician, a choir director, and a human being in seminary, engaging with liturgy, Scripture, theology, and liturgical music from all angles. It might be obvious, but I have a deep passion for the liturgical music. The history, the chant traditions, composition, the role that music plays in liturgy…I could go on and on, and I apologize in advance for when I inevitably talk your ears off or bore you on one thing or another. I promise, I do have other interests too, gardening, cooking, coffee, Tolkien, to name a few! Indeed, I thank God for all of these experiences, for they are what ultimately brought me here, and now that I am here, I am very excited to worship with you, work with you, and to grow in the life in Christ here at St. Mary’s. This cathedral has quite the reputation for its choir, born through the hard work of generations of Orthodox Christians here in this community, of the faithful and beloved choir directors like Father Gregory Ealy before me, and of you who work and sing here now. I am humbled to be a part of this rich history and legacy, and pray that together we might carry that on. I will leave you with this: the music in this church and in the Church at large is a ministry shared by us all, in and out of the choir. It is how we all experience liturgy; it is how we pray; it is how we join in one common voice in praise of our one God. I would go so far as to say that music is liturgy, and that in the Church music is prayer. This is our common work; I thank God for the opportunity to join you in this work, in this ministry of song and prayer, and in this ministry of liturgy and communal worship. In Christ, Zachariah Mandell

St. Mary's Summer Camp - It is our great pleasure to start the rollout of the St. Mary’s Camp Program for 2020. As we will

be unable to attend in person this year, we are putting together a virtual program that will run from June 28 - August 8. Camp this year will include a variety of events handled through a few different platforms. We will have activities that can be done at home on your own, events such as sermons that can be livestreamed or watched at your convenience either on your own or with your whole family and interactive opportunities with your cabin-mates playing games, having discussions and just getting to bond together. It is FREE - there are no charges to participate. This makes it a great opportunity to not only get as much participation as possible from our wonderful returning campers, but also a chance to pull in others within our church communities and introduce them to Summer Camp. Interactive events with specific age groups/ cabins will be done through ZOOM. In order to help us plan for camper numbers, we are asking you to REGISTER. This process will take approximately 30 seconds. Registration can be done at any time however, to get the Zoom links, updates, reminders etc. you will need to be registered. Please do not wait until the last minute to register to give us time to send the link(s) out to you. To register please visit: https://stmaryscamp.com/summer-camp/virtual-camp-2020/. We are still scheduling our specific events with our staff and clergy so the dates have not been set quite yet but all information will be rolled out on our website. We look forward to another fun camp year with you! - St. Mary’s Camp Task Force.

The 2020 Taste of NE festival has been canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We would have to start now getting permits, rentals etc. With so much uncertainty, and chance of resurgence in the fall, we felt this decision was the best for protecting our parishioners and guests. Let's look to 2021! Barb Dupay Festival Chair
