Chamber introduces Young Entrepreneur Program to Community.

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a groundbreaking and exciting

year long class that transforms high school students into real, confident en-

trepreneurs. Throughout the class, students develop business ideas, write

business plans, conduct market research, pitch their plans to a panel of inves-

tors, and actually launch and run their own real, legal, fully formed companies and social movements. Complete with

dynamic guest speakers from the local business community and exciting behind-the-scenes trips to local companies,

the fun, projects-based YEA! approach empowers students to take charge of their futures in a profound way.

Founded in 2004 at the University of Rochester with support from the Kauffman Foundation, the Young Entrepre-

neurs Academy today serves hundreds of students in communities across America. In 2011, the United States Cham-

ber of Commerce and Campaign for Free Enterprise became a national sponsor and partner of the Academy to help

celebrate the spirit of enterprise among today’s youth and tomorrow’s future leaders. (Read more on page 9.)

It is an honor to serve the Castle Rock community as the new chair of

the Chamber of Commerce. I look forward to working with Pam Ridler

and the exceptional staff at the Chamber, the committed Directors

and Ambassadors at the Chamber, and local business and community

leaders in fulfilling the purpose of the Chamber to support and pro-

mote business, foster a livable community with positive growth and

act as a “voice” to government.

It’s an exciting time to live and work in Castle Rock! Castle Rock has

long been recognized by leading publications as one of the best places

to live in the United States with its small-town charm, excellent

schools, outstanding recreational amenities for families and its proximity to everything Colorado.

Castle Rock is also quickly building an outstanding reputation for attracting and developing business

interests and was recently awarded Colorado’s Large Community of the Year by the Economic De-

velopment Council of Colorado (EDCC) for the second time in three years.

One of the challenges for Castle Rock will be to maintain the high standard of living and quality of

life for residents as the Town continues its growth past 50,000 residents. Residents have repeatedly

said that they want Castle Rock to be a self-sustaining community offering good jobs and amenities

for those that live here. Town Council has recently emphasized that it desires to draw more busi-

nesses to the area, not just to service more residences, but to provide middle-class paying jobs.

The Chamber can act as a catalyst in promoting and balancing our “sense of community” with the

best interests of business.

The keys to Castle Rock’s business success are the relationships and cooperative effort of its eco-

nomic partners including the Castle Rock Economic Partnership (CREP), the Town, Castle Rock Eco-

nomic Development Council, Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce and the Castle Rock Downtown

Alliance. This partnership, however, must stay true to its’ common mission of aggressively pursuing

business opportunities which are also in the best interest of the community.

Get involved! The Chamber offers outstanding programs to develop the relationships and knowl-

edge necessary for prosperous businesses such as the Castle Rock Economic Gardener’s Business

Boot Camp, Leadership Douglas County, Business After Hours, Business Over Breakfast, Leads

Groups, Castle Rock Stars Young Professionals, and higher education through Webster University.

The opportunities are endless.

In addition, the Chamber will continue to promote the community by sponsoring events such as the

Douglas County Fair Parade, Artfest, WineFest, Elephant Rock Ride, A Night at Gabriel’s, The Healthy

Lifestyle Expo, the Women of Influence, Young Entrepreneurs Academy and Starlighting.

Please take advantage of the opportunities that the Chamber offers to its membership. Join one of

the many programs or organizations within the Chamber, volunteer for one of the Chamber’s many

events or get involved with the Chamber’s economic partners and experience what Castle Rock is all

about.

On behalf of the Board, the Chamber’s staff and the members of the Castle Rock Chamber of Com-

merce, I thank you for your continuing commitment and devotion to this community.

The Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce is

pleased to announce its May recipient for

Business of the Month — Gabriel’s Res-

taurant and Tuscan Bar. They have been

proud members of the Castle Rock Cham-

ber of Commerce for more than 22

years!

Gabriel's Restaurant and Tuscan Bar has

been independently owned and operated

by Matthew and Jan Bundy since 1993,

which gives it a very personal touch,

though Matthew helped open Gabriel's in

1986 as the Manager at that time.

Gabriel's specializes in Northern Italian

four-course dining and is perfect for all

occasions; from a romantic first date to a

wedding celebration, holiday party and

any other special event that is looking for

a great place as their venue.

Five years ago Gabriel's added their Tus-

can Bar and now offers a wonderful Bis-

tro Menu in both the bar and on the

patio - no reservations needed for either.

During the warm season there is live mu-

sic on Fridays and Sundays on the patio.

If the weather decides to be “Colorado”

the band will play in the Milano Room

which then becomes an extension of the

Tuscan Bar. There's nothing quite like

sitting on the patio with a cold beer or

glass of wine, enjoying the music and

gazing up the Canyon. Matthew and Jan

love the work they do. Their motto is

"we get to go to work" and constantly

sing praise to their fabulous customers

and wonderful staff. On July 17th,

Gabriel’s will host one of three wine-

maker dinners preceding the 9th Annual

Castle Rock WineFest Grand Tasting on

July 21st.

Congratulations from the Castle Rock

Chamber. Gabriel’s Restaurant and Tus-

can Bar is located at 5450 Manhart Street

(Hwy 67) in Sedalia. Call 303-688-2323 or

visit www.gabrielsdenver.com for more

information.

Chamber Members Celebrating Anniversaries

Thank You for your continuous commitment and dedication to your

chamber. We celebrate your business success!

I have worked in the community,

with my husband, in Real Estate for

10 years and have more recently

taught Kindergarten. While teaching,

I began as an Independent Distribu-

tor for Premier Designs Jewelry as a

fun part-time job to make extra

money and as a way to get out with

other women. My dad had a stroke

that left him unable to care for him-

self, so I now share in his care. As a

result, I now work my Premier De-

signs Jewelry business full time, as

this allows me to work around my

dad’s schedule. Once beginning Pre-

mier full time, I decided the best

thing to do was to get involved with

the community through the Cham-

ber. I joined the Chamber in June of

2011 and became an Ambassador in

February of 2012. Joining the Cham-

ber has broadened my friendships

and business connections greatly.

I have met so many wonderful peo-

ple who live and work in this beauti-

ful town and I am honored to serve

the residents. There are so many

dedicated Ambassadors here at the

Castle Rock Chamber, that the

award of Ambassador of the Month

was quite a shock. I am blessed to

have this recognition and thank the

Chamber for this opportunity.

When I’m not working as a Jewelry

Lady or Ambassador, family time is a

priority. When time allows, I enjoy

dancing, playing piano, hiking and

traveling.

County Class of 2011.

The Leadership Douglas County class received

an overview of Fire and Emergency Manage-

ment Services in Douglas County during May’s

session held on May 2nd, 2012. The day high-

lighted the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority

and the Castle Rock Fire and Rescue agencies,

with presentations from the leadership of each

organization as well as eye-opening hands on

activities that gave the class a new appreciation

for what our firemen and medics do every day.

Chief Qualman provided an overview of the

services offered to Douglas County by the

SMFRA, including the special services they

offer. Chief Morales also provided an overview

of the Castle Rock Fire and Rescue Depart-

ment. A leadership skill segment is taught on

each class, and for May’s session, Chief Morales

presented “On the Court vs. in the Stands”,

which examines the difference between team

members who commit to moving their team

forward versus those members who watch the

game from the safety of the bleachers or

“stands”.

In response to the 2001 September 11th attacks,

the United States has created specialized agencies

to coordinate efforts to prevent, protect against,

respond to, recover from, and prosecute acts of

terrorism. The Colorado Information Analysis

Center (CIAC) is a multi agency fusion center

created to help prevent terrorism incidents in

Colorado. It is designed to link all stakeholders in

Colorado, from local and federal law enforcement

officers, to bankers and school teachers. It em-

phasizes detection, prevention, and information-

driven response to protect the citi-

zens and critical infrastructure of

Colorado. Terrorism cannot be com-

pletely eliminated. However,

through efficient use of resources,

the likelihood and impact of terror-

ist actions can be reduced. Matt

Retmer gave an overview of CIAC

and how our Douglas County agen-

cies interact with it.

“I am impressed with the South

Metro Fire Resource Authority and

the Castle Rock Fire and Rescue

Departments, their level of integrity, and sense of

leadership from top to bottom.”, Kay Dry, CH2M

Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) C o n t i n u e d f r o m f r o n t c o v e r .

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy is not

only a wonderful tool to teach students

about business, but also a great way to

build confident leaders with values. An

excellent instrument to unify the business

and educational communities, YEA! contin-

ues to expand across the country to fulfill

their mission of teaching more students

how to make a job, not just take a job.

By bringing the Young Entrepreneurs Acad-

emy to our community, the Castle Rock

Chamber will:

• Connect local business and community

leaders with students to build real

small businesses in our area while pro-

moting the spirit of enterprise.

• Promote job creation, economic devel-

opment, and growth among youth.

• Strengthen relationships between

your business and educational com-

munities.

• Create opportunities for Chamber

members to actively participate in the

program.

• Introduce the YEA! National Scholar-

ship Competition to students in Castle

Rock.

• Generate new revenue and positive

net profits for our Chamber through

the program.

YEA! strengthens the community and the

community strengthens YEA!. Students are

able to network with and develop relation-

ships with local business leaders, create jobs,

and launch businesses in their own back-

yard. Students see that they can make a

difference within the communities in which

they live. The enthusiasm and success of the

childhood in Texas, but returned to Colorado to receive a degree in Art History from the Univer-

sity of Colorado at Denver. As first lady, Frances volunteered her time to many charitable or-

ganizations, some of which include Anchor Center for the Blind, Developmental Pathways, Re-

cording for the Blind and Dyslexic, The Children’s Hospital, the Colorado Historical Society, The

Colorado Autism Society, Habitat for Humanity, and Volunteers of America. She chaired the

Governor’s Executive Residence which was originally constructed in 1908; as well as extensive

renovations of the Carriage House and lower gardens.

Ms. Owens began her career campaigning and working for former U.S. Senator Bill Armstrong in

the late 1970’s as well as working for the Colorado Council on Economic Education. Currently,

Aloha Fund Donates $8,500 to Colorado

Agricultural Leadership Foundation (CALF)

The two charitable organizations came to-

gether for the first time at the Healthy Living

Expo in February 2012. CALF and the Trust

arranged a follow-up meeting and tour of

the facilities and programs at CALF's Lowell

Ranch on Plum Creek. As a result, Aloha

Trust determined that CALF is an underuti-

lized, hidden "treasure" in Douglas County

that deserves greater attention and commu-

nity involvement. Aloha Trust was pleased to

donate $8,500 to support CALF's mission of

"connecting people to agriculture" and com-

mitment to develop youth leadership skills

through agricultural activities. "We are

thrilled by this generous donation," said

Brooke Fox, CALF President/CEO. "These

funds will go a long way to help CALF expand

the awareness and reach of our programs

aimed at connecting people with agricul-

ture." Read more at http://www.thecalf.org/
