RESTAURANT InSpired Fridays dine out for less Delighted community groups in the area are welcoming the allocation of funds from the In- daver Carranstown Commu- nity Fund, with a total of €221,000 being distributed. The fund was first awarded in 2011, and since then almost €1million has been allocated to local applicants! Over its pre- dicted 25 year lifespan, Indaver will pay out approximately €6million in community bet- terment projects. Prior to the fund, Indaver funded the pro- vision of a footpath from Duleek to Carranstown, facili- tating safe access to the soccer pitch and other amenities. Under the planning conditions of Indaver, a donation is made to the local community for every tonne that is accepted into the Waste-to-Energy facility. There is a good balance across the board between heritage, sport, schools, drama, etc.’ said Gayle Pierce of Indaver Ireland. ‘I am particularly pleased to have supported Mount Hanover National School who will receive €200,000 towards building a brand new General Purpose Room. Duleek’s new Youth Café – the Hangout Café – has opened itsdoors! Well done to the hardworking committee of local vol-unteers, in particular Anita and Mary.At the official opening, which was well attended, DGJ ShaneMcGuinness kept the music going, and finger food was served.Support from the wider community poured in, with donationsof various pieces of kitchen equipment dropped in, as well ascomputers, games and other activities for the youngsters touse. Trevor Keogh donated a car valet voucher worth 150which will be auctioned off at 3pm on Good Friday.Located in The Maudlins in the village centre, the HangoutCafé will be open Thursday- Sunday 5.30-7.30 for ages 10 to15. 7.30 -9.30 for the older groups 15years upwards. All arewelcome. Volunteer leaders have been trained up and are wellfit to engage and encourage Duleek’s youth, who now have adrop in centre exclusively for their use.

A major boost to Julianstown village andsurrounding areas is the opening of thevery chic Lime Kiln Gastropub in the for-mer Farrelly’s Roadhouse in the centre ofthe village.Totally revamped and redecorated in a dis-tressed fashion, The Lime Kiln, whichopened in March, offers a wide range ofmeats, salads, nibbles, starters and sweetstuff in pleasant surroundings, with verypleasant service.Proprietors are Stamullen locals JohnMacken, and Tom and Paula Carson, whoare behind the ambitious project. A fantas-tic opening night was held recently, wherelocals were invited in to sample the manydelights of Lime Kiln. Since then bookings

Cancer patients, survivors, families and friendsare invited to attend a Cancer Convention inCity North Hotel on Saturday 18 April. Atten-dees are welcome to attend lectures, ask ques-tions, attend free complementary therapyworkshops, and avail of other assistance andinformation.In the morning, medical professionals only willmeet and discuss cancer therapies. In the after-noon, the general public is invited to attend‘Living with Cancer’ from 1.30-6pm. ProfHennessy, along with a number of other cancerspecialists will discuss some of the most com-mon cancers in Ireland. Cancer sufferers are in-vited along with friends and families to beinvolved in a dialogue session with specialists

in a variety of fields within a relaxed andfriendly environment. A number of public figures including celebrity

The annual Duleek CreditUnion quiz was held recentlyin Duleek GNS. The fiveschools in the parish hadteams present on the day.Two teams from Scoil NaomhCianain, Cushinstown tookpart in the quiz. The Juniorteam consisted of pupils from4th class (see picture). Theycame in 2nd place, being nar-rowly beaten by one point.The Senior team consisted ofpupils from 5th and 6th

classes. They won the compe-tition and progressed to theMeath round of the CreditUnion quiz which was held inthe Pilo Hotel, Ashbourne atthe end of February. Theyput in an excellent perform-ance on the night and camein 4th place out of all theMeath schools taking part.This is the best resultachieved by any quiz teamfrom our school to date sowell done to all involved.

Donacarney Celtic FCDonacarney Celtic FC held a very successful fundraising night in The Glenside Hotel recently.Music was by Paula Clynch and Ged, as well as DJ Niall Bennett. Local businesses were verygenerous in their support of the club over the year, so thanks are also extended to them.

Knitters WantedAfter the fantastic success of the Naul knitting/crochet project last year where the Red ChestnutTree outside the centre was decorated with colourful knitting and crochet, they are doing thesame again this year. They plan to decorate the tree, outside of the coffee shop and old phonebox. So get your knitting needles and crochet needles out and any left-over wool you have andget knitting or crocheting. Scarves knitted last year were donated to St. Vincent De Paul. If youare interested in taking part e-mail Colette on [email protected]. Slane concertSlane concert takes place on Saturday 30 May this years, with two more support acts added tothe bill last week. The Strypes and Ash will support The Foo Fighters, Kaiser Chiefs and Hozier.

Lego figuresExperienced tutors will share tips and techniques on set building, filming, editing and creatingsound scapes. Lego figures will come to life as they walk and talk through a forest landscape.Participants will work in small groups to collaborate and create the set, storyboard and plantheir stop motion movie and then to film and produce it. The workshop is focused on hands onlearning and all participants will finished the day having created a brand new mini movie oftheir own! All materials are supplied though we would encourage participants to bring alongtheir own favourite Lego character if they have one! Brickflicks stop motion film course fee is€20 per child. Duleek ForóigeDuleek Foróige youth club has grown to some 50 members now, boys and girls aged 12-18years. Now in operation for 7 years, chairperson of Foroige is Evan Mahon. The group nowhas a Facebook page where events and pictures are regularly posted. They meet in their

clubhouse every Friday both theyounger and older group to have ourmeeting/agenda done out by membersand leaders. Since the beginning of theclub they have taken many trips and alsoorganised many fundraisers to help outother charities/organisations. Membersalso enjoy a big 3 day trip at the end ofevery year. Duleek Foróige is a greatgroup – pop in and visit sometime!

Gormanston College opened itsdoors to a series of public toursaround its historic halls, withproceeds going toward schoolfunds, in particular towards re-designing and developing theschool library.Organised by the Parents’ Coun-cil, the tours proved very popu-lar, with three taking place onone afternoon in March. Tourswere delivered by local historianand archivist Brendan Matthews.Over 90 attended, which was aresounding success!Organisers would like to thankthe Franciscan Fathers for theirsupport and in particular, to FrUlick. A number of studentshelped out, as did college staff,and a number of volunteer ladieswho helped out in many waysduring the day, in particular, infood preparation. Thanks toLouise from the Parents Associ-ation who was instrumental inorganising the entire event whichran like clockwork.The Meath Harp Ensemble fromNobber, the birthplace of Ire-land’s famous harpist TurloughO’Carolan, played throughoutthe day. Nobber has huge linkswith Gormanston Castle, as the

Preston family also maintainedan estate at Whitewood, Nobber.Gormanston Castle, with its hightowers and spectacular views,contains many fine spaciousrooms with large windows,bright passages and an impres-sive entrance hall.Gormanston has been connectedwith the Preston family for 6centuries. The Old Manor Houseat Gormanston was purchased bySir Robert Preston, 1st LordGormanston, in 1363. It is saidthat foxes foretold death in thePreston family. Legend goes thatbefore a family member died,foxes would gather from the sur-rounding countryside around thecastle grounds, howling andbarking. Foxes feature in thePreston family crest and coat ofarms.

AC awards14 local athletes com-peted at the NationalJuvenile Indoor Cham-pionships in Athlone ITrecently, bringing home8 individual medals, arelay medal and a newChampionship BestPerformance. This is afantastic medal haul fora rural club such asCushinstown and is areal testament to thehard work that goes onevery day by thecoaches and athletes inthe club.The standout perform-ance of the event wasShane Joyce’s Champi-onship Best Perform-ance in the U19 triplejump. Joyce hopped,stepped and jumped outto a massive 13.92m insetting the new record.

Also to medal was thevery much in form Eliz-abeth Morland whoclaimed gold in the U18long jump with a leap of5.62m. Shannon Sheehystormed to a very im-pressive silver medal inthe U17 60m hurdles ina time of 8.74 seconds,just getting dipped onthe line for gold. Balrath FC is a family orientated club,founded in 2010, with numerous eventsarranged each year such as HalloweenDiscos, barbecues in Balrath Forest,football, golf, Family Fun Days, QuizNights, end of season party etc. Re-cently all their under 10s. parents andcoaches went to Manchester to playagainst some local teams, get a tour ofOld Trafford and visit Alton Towers. A training academy for 4-6 year oldsruns every Thursday 6-7pm at a localall-weather facility at a cost of just €3per week. All coaches have an FAIqualification and are Garda vetted.Currently there are Under 8s, 9s, 10s,

11s for boys and girls and a GirlsUnder 14s team. They are currently re-cruiting new kids to the academy whichis suitable for any children born be-tween 2008 and 2011 and we will alsowelcome any players who would like tojoin an existing team. Bru na Boinne at Donore hostedtheir annual Shindig at the Centre tomark St Patrick’s Day. Festivitiesbegan with a special menu of typicalIrish dishes like Bacon & Cabbageor Irish Stew. This was followed bymusic and Irish dancing under theguidance of Shay White, Donore,who was Fear an Ti for the event.Local groups took part in parades inthe district, with many marching inthe Drogheda parade, and others inSlane. Representing local groupsand clubs in the community, themarchers certainly did their organ-isations proud.

Boyneside Trail walkwayPlans for a new Boyneside walkwayfrom Mornington to Drogheda havetaken a step further as senior officialsfrom the National Transport Authority(NTA) were in Drogheda to view theroute recently. Engineers andrepresentatives from Meath and LouthCounty Councils were also inattendance. The group first visitedOldbridge to view Phase 1, then theyfollowed the route from Mornington toDrogheda. Ultimately the route willextend out to Bru na Boinne atDonore. A plan to link the route withthe bus station and train station inDrogheda is vital for funding.

Yes,the hard working group has justtaken first place in the All Ireland setdancing competitions in An Grianan,Termonfeckin, headquarters of theIrish Countrywomen’s Association.Practicing for many months underthe watchful eye of teacher ShayWhyte, the ICA ladies took the PatsyLawlor plaque for a ½ set for thefourth year in a row! A delightedKathleen Vickers said, ‘It was mar-vellous to win again and we are

thrilled. Thanks to our teacher andmusician, as well as to our many sup-porters.
