LETTER FROM THE RECTOR For Such A Time As This
Inscribed on the inner walls of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, a gift from the French people, are
found the words, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Send
these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” Interestingly enough,
this has also been the message of the church to the world – give me your tired, your poor, your
huddled masses yearning to breathe free. The church welcomes with open arms all the people of the
world. Race, ethnicity, class, culture or nationality have no bearing on the invitation. The invitation is
extended to all. The church offers rest for the weary, abundant life and liberation from every force
which seeks to diminish, demean or destroy the human spirit.
On May 31, 2020 we celebrated Pentecost, the birth of the Christian Church. Pentecost reminds us
that the church was created as a welcoming community. Through the church, ancient divisions and
barriers separating the human family are destroyed. When we have been at our best, these barriers
and divisions have been erased. When we have been at our worst, they have been strengthened and
their destructive powers increased. Going forward, we have the opportunity to renew our
commitment to the mission of the church. The church stands in the middle of a major historical
moment. How we rise to this occasion will determine what future generations will say about us.
COVID-19 has reshaped how we worship and fellowship, teach and pray together. Until there is a
vaccine, our new normal will no doubt remain in place. Even after a vaccine is developed there will
be certain lessons that will inform our national life and communal experiences for decades to come.
In spite of the challenges of COVID-19, this is not a time for us to “hit the mute button.” This is not a
time for us to be silent. This is a time for us to continue to speak out about those things important for
the common good. The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, “God did not give us a spirit of cowardice,
but rather a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.” The King James Version says, “For God
hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).
We must use our power, our love and our soundness of mind to continue to be present in the world as
a voice for justice and peace. The voice of the church must be heard in virtual boardrooms, and
conference tables and in the legislative halls where decisions affecting our world and the quality of
human life are being made.
Pentecost reminds us that we are a great people. Pentecost reminds us that we have great spiritual
potential. Pentecost reminds us that we have been called to a great mission. We must live into this
greatness. If we choose to do what is well within our power, history will record these days as a time
when we rose to our calling to help the least the last and the lost. And most of all, our descendants
will rise up and call us blessed.
Yours in Christ,
Ronald E. Ramsey+

Update from the Advisory Panel for Re-Gathering the Church
Diocesan e-News, May 19, 2020
.
The Advisory Panel that is assisting Bishop Haynes to develop some guidelines for re-gathering
the church continues its work in earnest. We are aware that many are eager to return to church
buildings but want to do so as safely as is possible. We assure you that the guidelines will be
issued soon. In the meantime, church leaders and Vestries might begin thinking of the following
matters which the panel most certainly will recommend:
The appointment of health and safety officer in each parish who can oversee the
compliance with health and safety guidelines. This does not necessarily have to be a
medical person (such as a doctor or nurse), but someone who is familiar with the
guidelines and can oversee their implementation parish-wide.
The ordering and securing of health, cleaning and sanitizing supplies such as hand
sanitizer, sanitizing wipes, and face masks. The development of protocols for cleaning
and sanitizing the building after each use.
The removal of prayer books and hymnals from the pews unless a protocol is developed
to sanitize them in between services.
The measuring of seating space and marking of seats so that 36 square feet is afforded
each unit that is seated in the pews (noting that family units may be counted as one unit).
It is worth considering that the usual worship space in the building may not be the best
room in which social distancing is the most easily accomplished. Consider your parish
halls or other large rooms as temporary worship spaces for the sake of social distancing.
Paying attention to how traffic flows through the space so that people enter by one way
and exit by another.
Consideration by church musicians of other forms of music besides choral and
congregational singing (at least in the initial re-entry phases).
Continued use of online worship for those vulnerable members who should not return to
the building initially.
These are just a few suggestions of what churches can be doing now to get ready. God is
empowering us to be the Church during this pandemic. We are called to respond. ~ Bishop

ST. CYPRIAN’S CHURCH SUPORTS THE
VIRGINIA PENINSULA FOODBANK
Pictured: Juanita Alexander, Junior Warden
In May 2020, St. Cyprian’s Church contributed $1,000.00 towards the support of the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank’s Summer Backpack Program. This contribution will be used to help the Foodbank in its efforts to provide nutritious backpack meals to needy children in our local community.
The need for contributions to the Foodbank is especially urgent this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the early closure of schools where children in need traditionally received backpack meals during the regular school year. Because of the current crisis, more children than ever before are depending on and using the food services and feeding programs provided by the Virginia Foodbank. In a recent phone conversation, Jacqueline Linder, Nutrition Program Director for the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank, graciously thanked our church for its contribution.
The following is a breakdown of the funds collected for the Summer Backpack Program: General Congregation (Five Dollar Sunday from Jan-March 2020) $393.95 Rector’s Discretionary Fund $350.00 Circle # 2 $265.05
Special thanks is extended to St. Cyprian’s Church Family for your steadfast and generous support of this important and critical community program. Please visit the Diocesan website and St. Cyprian’s Facebook page for additional information and pictures. ~ Juanita Alexander, Circle # 2

YOUTH RECOGNITION SUNDAY
Each spring, the achievements of our non-graduating youth under the age of eighteen have been formally recognized by Circle #2 during a special Youth Recognition Sunday. This year because of the COVID-19 health crisis, our youth are being recognized in June 2020 with individualized picture albums (and accompanying flash drives). The albums contain pictures that show the various activities that the church youth engaged in at St. Cyprian’s during the past year (from September 2019 to March 2020).
Circle # 2 sends its best wishes and congratulations to all of our non-graduating youth and hope that they will enjoy these expressions of our love and concern for them. (Juanita Alexander will send an album and flash drive to each of the church’s youth. Please contact her if your child does not receive a gift album and flash drive.) ~ Juanita Alexander
