Term 4 Week 5

The term’s activities are really ramping up now; with many exciting events planned for the remainder of this term. The Hentyscape last week and the PBL treat day in Wagga this week announced the beginning of many wonderful experiences for our students before the end of the year.

Tell Them From Me Survey

A big thanks to parents, students and teachers for completing the Tell Them From Me survey. This survey provides very useful feedback about how we are going and gives us future milestones that we still need to achieve to ensure that we are delivering the best education to all students at Henty Public School. In the coming weeks I will share some key findings from survey responses in the Kalori.

Stage 3 Excursion

Congratulations to the Stage 3 students who went on their excursion last week. I had good reports from all venues about both behaviour and attitude. I really enjoyed seeing students in costume on Facebook and could see happy and exhausted faces upon their return. A huge thanks to Miss Watson, Mrs Liston and Mrs Malmo for all their hard work to ensure the excursion was a success.

Hentyscape

A big thank you to those people who helped sell glow products or sell raffle tickets at the Hentyscape last Friday evening. What a fun night it was for everyone!

Christmas Raffle

As you are aware, this year we have been upgrading the Art room into a new multi-purpose maker space. Monies raised from this raffle will go towards more equipment and technology for this room.

The hamper contributions have been wonderful and ticket sales are well under way! Students will come home with tickets today and it would be appreciated if you could help sell them to family and friends.

Volunteers Morning Tea

A volunteers’ morning tea will be held at the school on Thursday 22nd November. We are looking forward to saying a big thanks to those of you who have helped in small and larger ways throughout 2018. We have a wonderful school community and all staff are very thankful for everything that you do! Please let us thank you on this day with morning tea!

2019 Captain Speeches

On Thursday, students in year 5 who wish to run for School Captain will give their speech at a special assembly at 9:30am in the hall.

After speeches, students and staff will go back to class to vote for four students who they wish to see as leaders in 2019, (This year’s Year 6 will not be included in the vote). The boy with the highest tally for boys will be Boy Captain and the girl with the highest votes will be Girl Captain. The students with the next highest votes will be named Vice Captains, regardless of gender.

Have a great week

YEAR 4 PURPLE

Kalori /5

Half way through our last term of Year 4 already! What a busy term we have already had, not to mention everything to follow. Over the course of the first 5 weeks of this term Year 4 have been involved in many exciting activities.

Year 4 were very privileged last Thursday to be given the opportunity to learn how to play the game ‘Goalball’ by one of the best players in Australia and the current Coach of the Australian Women’s Paralympics team. The children had an absolute blast as the game is consisted of 3 players on each side, while wearing blindfolds. It was very new experience for all of the children but an amazing experience for all.

Sport has played another big factor in our first 5 weeks of this term, as year 4 has been honing some new skills on the basketball court. This has been a great opportunity for the children to practise dribbling, passing and we have begun to learn how to shoot and ‘lay-up’. We certainly look forward to our Friday sessions! Some of the children in 4 Purple also just participated in a small tennis knockout last week which was great fun! It was a beautiful day in the sun and the children were fantastically well behaved and were able to cheer on each other as well as be terrific ball boys and girls when they weren’t busy playing.

In class we were lucky enough to have the chance to play around with some new robotics by the name of Blubots. The children were given the opportunity to work in small groups and explore the world of coding, from simple codes and directions to move the bot around an obstacle course. They can’t wait to have another go!

As previously mentioned in the Kalori, Henty Public school is trialling a new app called ‘SeeSaw’ which is currently being used to great success in some other classes. 4 Purple will be giving this a go as it will give parents the opportunity to keep up to date with activities and the learning the children are undertaking in class. A note will be sent home sometime this week which will show you how to connect and view some of the wonderful work your children are completing. The children have been given a sneak peek into this and are very excited to be able to share this at home with their families.

I look forward to the remainder of the year in 4 Purple and all the fun activities we will be part of.

Have a great week.

Mr Davis

P & C NEWS

The Annual General Meeting for 2018 will take place on Wednesday 5 December 5.30pm. The AGM will be directly followed by the next general meeting of the P&C. As this is my last year at Henty Public School, I would be grateful for nominations for the role of secretary. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding what is involved in the job.

We welcome all and any parents and guardians to be involved in the P&C, and I attach an article from the Sydney Morning Herald to inspire and encourage all aspiring dads and male carers who might be interested in being involved in their children’s education and to learn more about how the school runs. We have previously heard from some dads who say they have been interested but perhaps felt a bit ‘outnumbered’ at P&C meetings. We are a very inclusive P&C, and meetings are informal and friendly. We warmly welcome any new members!

Kind regards, Cindy Scott, Secretary HPS P&C

This is an article taken from the SMH

It started with a simple offer to use their business contacts to help kickstart some fundraising for their kids’ fete.

But for a group of dads planning the schoolyard fete quickly became a much bigger proposition.

The four dads ended up as the all male executive of the school’s Parents & Friends committee at St Columba’s Catholic Primary in Leichhardt.

“A lot of mums have done the heavy lifting at the school for a long time but it was time for the dads to step up and help because mums are busy too and it is no excuse anymore to say that we are too busy,” Gus Seebeck, the St Columba’s P&F Preseident said.

***School volunteering in no longer just the job of mums***

Page 10: Kalori Henty Public School Week 5 Term 4€¦ · 03/12/2018 - Cathy Coe 10/12/2018 - Tania Corrigan 17/12/2018 - Simone Brown Term 4 Canteen Menu is available on school stream and

Mr Seebeck, who has a background in major events and sponsorship, said the fathers all had different skills to offer the parent body.

Their treasurer is Tim Nelson, the chief economist at AGL. Dr Nelson said he wanted to be a good role model for his children.

Your kids will grow up to be who you are, not what you want them to be,” Dr Nelson said.

“Historically, P&F’s have had a whole bunch of mums doing all the work but dads have an important role too and should be involved. I also think the school does so much for my kids so I really wanted to contribute.”

Richard Fletcher, who leads the Fathers and Families Research Program at Newcastle University, said the involvement of fathers in schools was vital.

“We know from the research that if dads are involved in their children’s education, their children will do better.” Dr Fletcher said.

While they may be unique when it comes to parent bodies, the St Colomba’s dads are not alone in helping out at schools.

Rachael Sowden, a regional president of the P&C which represents public school parents and a consultant in raising parental engagement, said father were more involved in schools than ever before.

“There is no doubt that we are seeing dads doing a lot more to help out at schools, whether that be in the traditional ways like on canteen or helping with reading or they may have a particular skill to offer that the school could really use,” Dr Sowden said.

“I know at my school, for example, the working bee used to be 99 per cent mums and now it would wasily be 810 per cent dads.”

Dr Sowden said she had not heard of any all-male P&C’s in NSW public school but fathers played a much bigger role in the committees.

“We would often see P&C’s now where it is 50/50 mums and dads”

School volunteering in no longer just the job of mums cont’d
