KI TAVO

"And it shall be, when thou cometh into the land which the Lord

thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and dost posses it, and

dwell therein."

As the parsha opens, Moshe prescribes the rituals and prayer

which are to accompany the presentation of the first fruits and

tithes. He formulates the covenant between Hashem and the

people and gives instructions regarding the four ceremonies by

which the nation is to declare the terms of its tenure as it enters

the Promised Land.

The underlying significance of the mitzvah of bringing bikurim (first

fruits of the soil) is summarized in a short passage which is repeat-

ed to the Kohen at the Temple, "And now behold, I have

brought the first of the soil which thou, O Lord, has give me."

Our rabbis read profound meanings into three crucial words in

the above declaration. The word Ve'Atah is meant to emphasize

miyad (immediately). It implies that one must not delay to bring

bikurim because they need to be brought fresh and never

stale. This is to teach us that when making a contribution to the

community it must be made miyad, (immediately) with dis-

patch. One should never put off today; going to shul, learning,

giving of Tzedakah or fulfilling their pledge and obligation to their

community or shul.

The second word in the declaration is hineh (behold). The rabbis

say this word means simcha (joy). One must bring bikurim with a

happy and joyous heart, be'Simcha U'Vetuv Le'vav. The last

word of the three words of the declaration is the word heveti (I

brought). The rabbis say this word means Mi'Sheli (from me). The

bikurim that we bring to the Temple must be our own. You can't

fulfill this obligation by proxy. You can't ask the rabbis or others to

make your obligation whole. No one can give your tzedakah, or

go to classes for you. The idea is for us to involve ourselves and

bring the bikurim personally.

This parsha of Ki Tav, is always read two weeks before Rosh

Hashana because of the Tochacha (rebuke) which is listed in this

parsha. This is to remind us before Yom Tov to change our ways

and be more mindful of our actions.

The Tochacha (rebuke) (which is always read two weeks before

Rosh Hashanah), or shall we say the warnings in today’s parsha,

are a frightening prediction of what could and has happened to

us during our exile from the Promised Land. Living in a dangerous

global environment we should take seriously our fate and security

wherever we live. No Jew can dissociate him/herself from his/her

people, religion, and the fate of Israel.

As we near Rosh HaShanah let us be mindful of our obligations to

Hashem, the land of Israel, and each other.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Gabe Elias

PARASHAT KI TAVO

The beginning of my Parsha, Parshat Ki Tavo, outlines the pro-

cedure of bringing the Bikkurim, the First Fruits, to the Mizbeach

in the Beit HaMikdash. Farmers would bring baskets adorned

with jewels and other fancy decorations to a Kohen, who would

then place it before the Mizbeach. The owner of the Bikkurim

would then declare:

“…Arami Oved Avi, Vayered Mitzrayma, Vayagar Sham

Bimtei Me’at, Vayehi Sham L’Goy Gadol Atzum VaRav.”

‘Then you shall speak up and you shall say before Hashem,

your G-d, an Arami tried to destroy my forefather. He descend-

ed to Egypt and he lived there with few, and he became there

a nation, great, mighty, and numerous.’

Who was the Arami, and which of our Avot did he attempt to

destroy? Furthermore, what is the point of this declaration while

performing the Mitzvah of Hava’at Bikkurim, the offering of the

First Fruits?

Rashi, on this pasuk, answers all three questions. The Arami was

Lavan, who tried and failed to destroy our forefather, Yakov Avi-

nu. And Rashi also informs us we mention this as an example of

Hashem’s kindness, as Rashi says:

“Mazkir Chasdei HaMakom”—by mentioning the section of

‘Arami Oved Avi’ we are mentioning and remembering Chasdei

Hashem, the kindness of G-d.

As if this all weren’t confusing enough, in the Haggadah shel

Pesach we also mention this section of ‘Arami Oved Avi’ as a

fulfillment of the Mitzvah of Sippur Yetziat Mitzrayim, the retelling

of the Exodus of Egypt on the night of Pesach.

What exactly is the connection between Lavan and Yakov,

Yetziat Mitzrayim, and the bringing of the Bikkurim on the Miz-

beach in the Beit HaMikdash? The Midrash explains that Lavan

was an evil and deceitful person who planned to murder his son

-in-law Yakov, and Hashem Himself had to intervene and warn

Lavan not to harm Yakov.

Rav Soloveitchik understood this as setting off a chain reac-

tion of events. Yakov resettled in the Land of Israel with his 12

sons, the future 12 Shevatim. They eventually descended to

Egypt, suffered 210 years of slavery, and ultimately were led by

Moshe to Geulat Yetziat Mitzrayim, the redemption from Egypt.

Immediately afterward we became an official Nation—Am Yis-

rael. Shortly after that we received the Torah, and only many

years later were we able to celebrate and praise the fruits of

Eretz Yisrael through the bringing of the Bikkurim in the Beit

HaMikdash.

Really, all of our stories began with Yakov breaking away

from the dishonest Lavan Ha’arami. From there Yakov raised his

own family, and from his 12 sons came all of Klal Yisrael.

Rav Soloveitchik explained that we begin to retell the story of

Yakov’s escape from Lavan, the section of “Arami Oved Avi,”

by both the Haggadah on Pesach and Mikra Bikkurim, because

they both are rooted in Hakarat Ha-Tov, showing gratitude to

Hashem. Sippur Yetziat Mitzrayim and Mikra Bikkurim are fulfilled

through Shevach, Shira, and Hoda’ah—praise, song, and

thanks. And to accurately retell the entire story one must begin

with “Arami Oved Avi,” with the story of Yakov’s separation from

his father-in-law, Lavan.

Shabbat Shalom !
