Principal’s Message
Hope - Living with Purpose
Prayer
25 May, 2018
Dear Parents and Friends,
For the first time at Killester College we have experienced Wellbeing week. The wellbeing of all members of our community is naturally an ongoing focus at Killester, but this week wellbeing has been prominent, with activities for students and staff on some mornings and during every lunchtime. Tai Chi, Zumba, Yoga, guest speakers and forums on various wellbeing issues have featured. Students and staff have participated enthusiastically and an awareness of caring pastorally for one another has underpinned the week.
Wellbeing and learning and teaching are the yin and yang of education. Neither construct works effectively without the other. Our school community is a happy and positive one, and also values hard work and growth. Students, staff and parents are all constantly learning, particularly in a time where society is constantly examining what is valuable and worthwhile. This week has helped us reflect on how important simple happiness is. It is paramount that we all experience enjoyment and fulfilment from things we spend the majority of our time on. At the heart of this are relationships between all members of our community.
Young people are still learning social and emotional skills during adolescence and even into their twenties. As adults, we are sometimes challenged by the question of how to best assist our daughters and students to navigate this part of their lives. Understanding ourselves and other people is an integral part of every lesson, whether it be as part of the subject matter or skills being taught or as part of the interaction between teacher and student, teacher and parent or teacher and teacher. We must be aware of our own personal strengths and also be able to recognise these in others. When we set goals these are more meaningful if they are related to what we know we are good at, either academically, physically, emotionally or socially.
As we all reflect further on our first wellbeing week, we should think further about how we feel affects how we learn and how we teach.
Best wishes for the upcoming week,
Stephen McPhailTeaching and Learning Coodinator
God of Mercy,
For those who face any hardships or dif-
ficulty during their lives,
We pray that they are supported and
encouraged by their family and friends.
Help us to stay positive and
encourage others to always try their best.
We make this prayer through Jesus, who
teaches us to have strength and courage
through hard times.
Amen

Applications for the CSEF allowance close on 22/6/18, so, after this date, applications will not be accepted and you will not receive the $225.00 per child from the Government, used to reduce the cost of your fees. If you have a current health care card and have not handed in your application, this is your last opportunity, so do so today. Late applications cannot be accepted.
Naplan concluded yesterday. As one of the schools who completed the testing online, it was certainly a test for our IT capabilities - which passed with flying colours. The whole process was completed very smoothly. Thanks to the IT staff for their very extended support over the past two weeks.

Monash Engineering Scholarship Celebration
On Wednesday 9 May, Monash Engineering welcomed ninety first year students, their families and representatives from their high schools to the annual Engineering Scholarship Celebration.
Sallyann Vu was among the select group of recipients celebrated on the evening. The Dean of Engineering, Professor Elizabeth Croft, presented a gift to each scholarship recipient in recognition of their achievements.
Guest-speaker, Mechanical Engineering student Monique Lautee, presented an inspiring insight into her life at Monash University. “Engineering is about turning the theory into something useful. It’s going to challenge the way you think, the way you problem solve, the way you work with other people and it will also impact the way you see the world and your place in it,” she emphasised.
Monique’s advice to first year students is to make the most of every opportunity and don’t be afraid to try something new. “Monash has offered me countless opportunities to not only advance my technical skills, but also develop myself as a person – both professionally and personally.”

On the 22nd of May the Year 9s had their SCIP day. SCIP stands for School Community Involvement Program. Throughout this day we learnt about the skills we need to go out and give back to the community. We were addressed in the morning by a former Killester student, Urge Dinedge, who went out to help with the education of young people in rural areas of Ethiopia, which sparked her idea to create an organisation now known as The Village School Project. We were introduced to the idea of commu-nity service and what it means to help others.
As part of the SCIP program we will be attending organisations within the local area. This day opened our eyes to the ways we can contribute to the world, by simply volunteering. We now know what to expect and are excited for the next few weeks participating in SCIP. We would like to thank all the students and teachers involved in this day!

The Year 7 Sports leaders, Charlotte Fox and Ruby Hammerstein-D’Atri, have been organising a lunchtime activity for the Year 7 students. The idea for the activity came from a Year 7 leaders’ meeting, where we were discussing the focus of giving girls fun activities at lunchtimes as well as building Homeroom spirit and friendships.
The girls asked the students to find a team of seven players from their Homeroom to play in a tournament against other classes.
The first two rounds have been played and the next games will be a semi final and a Grand Final at the end. Each Homeroom was represented in the competition.
St Hildegard beat St Maria Goretti in one game and St Nea beat St Rafka.St Elizabeth played against St Nea and won the game. St Elizabeth are straight into the semi finals.
St Hildegard will play St Nea to see who will play against St Elizabeth in the final.
The girls have really enjoyed the competition and are looking forward to further activities organised by their leaders. A great effort from Charlotte and Ruby.
Good luck to the two finalists next week
