We have reached the midway point of the school year and if you didn’t pick up your daughter’s report last night you will receive it by post during the holidays. Last Friday we had the Poor Person's Mass and filled the shelves of the St Vincent de Paul's food bank. It has been a busy week with the commencement of Semester Two for VCE students on Monday. On Tuesday Year 7s completed the fundraising challenge, Jump Rope for Heart, whilst Year 8s had a LOTE day in the city. Staff have been completing reports and, yesterday, we had the final school assembly for this term. Yesterday the music teachers, Katy Addis and Bernie Hickey, and 23 students headed off to Castlemaine to play across a number of venues until Sunday. If you are in the area of the tourist train between Castlemaine and Maldon tomorrow you will hear them playing.

The holiday program has planned visits to Myuna Farm, Eastland and the movies. If you have any queries, please contact Katie Mills here at the College.

On Sunday 16th July two girls from Hong Kong will arrive for the Immersion Program. They will stay with a family from Killester and attend school for two and a half weeks. Thanks to the Rae family (Bridget Year 11) for hosting this year. Mazenod is also a part of this program, with two boys also joining them.

Next term commences with a student free day on Monday 17th July. Students commence on Tuesday 18th July, with Year 7s having a cultural day with their Humanities teachers and visitors from the Aboriginal Cultural Infusion group.

Best wishes to everyone for the holiday period - stay safe and warm.

Pierre De Coubertin Awards

On Friday 23rd June one hundred and forty senior secondary school students were involved in the annual Pierre De Coubertin Awards Ceremony, as well as International Olympic Day. This year’s awards were held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Selena Heng was selected as the Killester College award recipient. She was supported and accompanied by sports leaders, Karina Diaz and Jennifer Wang. Karina, Jennifer and Selena attended the Olympic Academy on Thursday, where they were able to meet both current and former olympians (including holding Catherine Skinner’s gold medal!), visit the National Sports Museum as well as meeting Olympic Academy representatives and other Pierre De Coubertin award recipients from other schools. Named after the founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre De Coubertin, the award recognises students who demonstrate academic excellence and sporting prowess as well as exemplifying the olympic values. Pierre De Coubertin believed that the qualities of initiative, team work, sportsmanship and fair play should be encouraged in youth who participate in sport. Selena Heng has been involved in numerous sports from Year 7 to Year 12 (even competing in the SCSA cross-country last week). Selena was nominated not only because of her sporting participation but also because of her demonstration of the Olympic values through Killester College sport. On Friday evening, Selena was presented with her award in front of her family, Olympians, teachers and other award recipients. Selena should be commended on her commitment and attitude towards sport at Killester College, she is a most deserving Pierre de Coubertin award winner. Congratulations Selena!

Guitar/Bass Soiree

Last Tuesday night saw the third of the music soirees for semester one. This time it was the guitar students beautifully supported by their teacher Mr Nick Maurer and the brass students performing in front of their family and friends in a supportive environment. I am sure all of the girls got some pleasure in performing although there is always a mixture of nerves and tension beforehand. This is a really important part of the instrumental program as solo performance is very difficult and the girls learn a lot about themselves in this environment. Everyone performed very well on the night which started with a Moonlight Air, a touch of Beiber, a trip to London, some Tequila, a Snappy rag, a trip to the American Civil War, some Grande and finished with a terrific version of Hotel California. Well done to all the girls and thanks to their very supportive family and friends.

On 26th June 2017, the Year 10 went on an excursion to Scienceworks. Although the morning was cold and most of us were ready to shift to holiday mode, we all eagerly awaited arrival to Scienceworks as some of us had not been there for five years.

The year level was split into two groups, one first going to the open gallery whilst the other heading to the Lighting Room. In the open gallery, there was a variety of interactive displays, presenting technology of the past, of the present and of the hopeful future. In the Sportwork exhibition, many girls found themselves racing against Cathy Freeman or in the Paralympics, racing in a wheelchair. In addition, on the balcony above the exhibition, there were several delightful re-enactments of Romeo and Juliet as well as Titanic.

In the Lightning Room, we were enlightened to an education show about energy, witnessing lightning in front of our very eyes. What made the show all the more amusing was watching several of our friends go up to volunteer for some activities.

We then headed to the Planetarium, where we watched a documentary film called Our Living Climate. Many of the girls certainly enjoyed the recliner chairs that the Planetarium had to offer as well as the show. We were also treated to some stargazing, which helped us to realise that our skills in identifying constellations was less than average. The overall experience of the Planetarium was quite trippy, as it almost felt like we were leaving Earth and going into the outer space!

The excursion to Scienceworks was enjoyable and a remarkable end to the term, providing us with new memories we will be sure to cherish – even in spite of the immense threat of bird poo when walking outside!

Yr 10 Scienceworks Excursion

On the bone-chilling morning of Wednesday 21st July, a group of dedicated Killester girls from Years 7-12 arrived at Yarra Bend Park in Fairfield for the fierce SCSA Cross Country competition. The course was to be completed over 3kms and although it had started off as a gloomy wet day, soon enough the weather was on our side, with clear skies for all the upcoming races. The Juniors were first to start off the day, followed by the Intermediates and Seniors. Despite our nerves and the frigid cold, we were all very excited and motivated to do our best. It seemed like all our Monday morning and Thursday lunchtime training had paid off as Killester placed fourth out of 11 schools overall! A big congratulations also, is to be given to Sienna Quinn as she placed nineth in the Junior division! Killester truly demonstrated great sportsmanship and encouragement for their teammates, with even some of the juniors cheering and running alongside the seniors crossing the finishing line. A special thanks must be given to the teachers - Ms Roberts, Ms Kennedy, Ms Neville and Ms Dodgson, who helped guide and manage our team. Without them, this day would not have been possible! Overall, the SCSA Cross Country competition was a major success, we had a good run and I will surely miss being part of such a great team.

Year Visual Art: Landscapes, Trees and Seedpods

This semester in YEAR 7 VISUAL ART the students have studied the natural world of LANDSCAPES, TREES & SEED PODS. The students have used the media of acrylic paint in the Painting Unit and clay in the Ceramic Unit to inspire their designs. The students visual diary is essential in the planning of their artworks. They start by brainstorming their topic, making mind maps, researching visual images of their topic, sketching a number of composition options to result in their final design. These steps are all part of the students 'Design Thinking' techniques of creative, critical and reflective thinking that result in high quality Artworks the students are to be proud of. The students also spend time learning how to use the chosen media involving new skills and techniques.

On the 22nd of June, the Year 11’s of Killester College shared a memorable PD day. Together, we learnt about the importance of decision making and problem solving through the help of talented guest speakers, Rhiannon Tracey and Catherine Manning. Rhiannon, shared the importance of how the decisions we make affect the outcome of our life whether it be positive or negative. She shared with us her life changing story, of how she became a quadriplegic and most importantly how she bounced back from this situation and against all odds and still seeks to live her life to the fullest.

Catherine Manning talked about equality, the importance of having positive outlook on our choices and being comfortable in our own skin. She manifested the importance of this through a creativity activity of making a pocket full of affirmations about ourselves, and sharing affirmations with our friends. She highlighted the importance of friendship, and how to tackle obstacles that may arise in our relationships in the future. We participated in acting out scenarios which may frequently arise in our friendships, especially with girls and tackling the most effective way to resolve these problems.

The Year 11’s sealed the day with a delightful shared lunch within our homerooms, further developing the friendships within our year level. Our last activity of the day was about the importance of relaxation as we all gladly joined in some stretching and meditation. Overall, the day was a huge success and taught us many valuable lessons, which we can carry with us throughout our lives both in and out of Killester.

Elisha Barrow and Gurpreet Kaur, Year 11

Year 11 PD Day Student Report

Jump Rope for Heart is a fundraising and physical activity program based around skipping. It teaches school aged children how to keep fit and healthy, all while having fun and raising vital funds for heart disease research and education.

On the 27th of June all the year 7’s had a fantastic time doing Jump Rope for Heart. We all went into the hall and skipped for 2 hours in the annual jump off, there were prizes to be won and fun to be had!

Earlier in the year Montana who works for Jump Rope for Heart taught us all different ways of skipping, so on the day we were all attempted to do all of those fun ways of skipping. We also did some competitions against each other and against other classes. There was individual skipping, partner skipping and class skipping. The class that always seemed to win was St Rose as they had great skippers. All students were enthusiastic and positive throughout the session and were fantastic!

Overall, the year 7s raised a total of $1,813 which is an amazing effort, well done! Well done to Sienna Slater raising a massive $374 and St Elizabeth for altogether as a class raising $657.

Well done to all students!
