1st December, 2017

Dear Parents and Friends,

This Sunday marks the start of Advent. The season of Advent lasts for four Sundays leading up to Christmas. Each of the next four weeks is a step to celebrating the coming of Jesus Christ and preparing for a new year.

Week 1 marks “Hope” and reminds us that Jesus is coming.

Week 2 marks “Faith” and reminds us to prepare for the way of the Lord.

Week 3 marks “Joy” and reminds us of the joy of the coming of Christ.

Week 4 marks “Peace” and reminds us of the peace and love that Christ represents.

Life is a constant Advent season: we are continually waiting to become, to discover, to complete, to fulfill. Hope, struggle, fear, expectation and fulfillment are all part of our Advent experience.

The world is not as just, not as loving, not as whole as we know it can and should be. But the coming of Christ and his presence among us—as one of us—give us reason to live in hope: that light will shatter the darkness, that we can be liberated from our fears and prejudices, that we are never alone or abandoned.

May this Advent season be a time for bringing hope, transformation and fulfillment into the Advent of our lives.

During these last days of Term 4 we wish our students and their families all the best for this Christmas season. May you all celebrate together as you welcome the coming of a new year.

Joy is the true gift of Christmas, not the expensive gifts that call for time and money. We can communicate this joy simply: with a smile, a kind gesture, a little help and forgiveness. And the joy we give will certainly come back to us.

Have a safe and peaceful holiday season.

The State Library of Victoria run a fantastic school holiday program for 12 - 15 year olds called 'story camp'. This three day event is free, and includes lunch as well as a MYKI card to cover the cost of travel. Students will work with famous fiction writers and poets in a series of workshops over the three days. A number of Killester students have attended story camp throughout the year and have commented on what a fantastic experience it was. Please see the flyer included in this newsletter for more information about how to register your daughter for this brilliant opportunity!

Throughout my entire schooling life, I have always tried my hardest to be involved and lead by example, and to my surprise, I was fortunate enough to win the Arthur Williams Rotary Junior Citizenship Award on Thursday the 23rd November. The Arthur Williams Junior Citizenship Award is awarded to a student who is “an outstanding example to fellow students during the school year 2017”. I was pleasantly shocked to find out that I had fulfilled the criteria and that I was most eligible to win this award. With Ms Kokoszka and my mum, we attended a lovely dinner with five other students from various schools in the area, their teachers and parents, and several members of the rotary club. My grandfather used to do immense amounts of work with the rotary club, and was heavily involved in the production of many of their events, so I have grown up going to fundraisers with them. As I was quite young I don’t really remember too many people, but it was very sweet when many members (Rotarians) remembered me. All of the other students seemed to be very kind and well deserving of the award, some of them being just as shocked as I was to have been elected. I am so honoured to have won the award, and hope to keep on striving for excellence while contributing my efforts to both the Killester and wider community.

Killester Summer Music Concert

If you only saw one concert this year......... you should get out more often. The Anne Boyd Theatrette came alive to the musical talents of our junior students in the Summer Sounds Concert held on Wednesday night. Highlights were almost too numerous to mention but we'll give it a shot anyway. Concert 1, held at 5.00pm, featured the Heartstrings, our two Year 7 bands, soloists Olivia Zammit on guitar and Vivien Nguyen on piano and the irrepressible HONK to finish the program. The Year 7 bands played enthusiastically and surprised themselves with the musical level they achieved. Heartstrings played The Colours of the Wind very well indeed with some lovely colours of their own. Our soloists, Olivia (Hallalujah by Cohen) and Vivien (Lieberstraum No.3 by Listz), who are both doing Unit 3/4 Music Performance in 2018, performed with skill and musicality. Honk won the best timing award by performing a soundtrack to a Silent Movie almost to the second.

The second concert started at 7.00pm and featured the Swing Sisters under the guidance of the multi-talented Ms Garafolo singing Beyonce's Halo. The girls were very impressive with their ensemble singing and lovely rounded sound. Our two specialist Year 8 bands then performed. They had been studying the Blues over the semester and the pieces, Louie Louie, Smoke on the Water and In the Mood, gave our students the chance to show off their new found improvising skills as well as their ever improving instrumental playing in general. Our soloists in the second concert were Christiana Vu (Polonaise by Telemann) and Stephanie Paul (One for Mum by Davidson). Both girls played with poise and maturity. Honk once again finished off the concert with a terrific performance of John Williams' Superman. We took some time to thank our wonderful comperes, Thaveesha, Alyssa, Christiana and Bridget as well as the crew of Year 11s and 10s who helped on lighting and backstage planning (Alisha, Mikayla). An ex student, Karla Bader, helped out for the entire day for which we were very grateful. Another ex-student and musician, Lucky Lamprell, designed the program cover for us.We also farewelled Ms Addis and Ms Baker and thanked them for all the work they have done for the music department. In all, a great night that showed that music at Killester is continuing to improve as we gain greater numbers and more expertise in our music making. Well done girls.

On Thursday 3rd November the RACV Energy Breakthrough teams from Years 9 and 10, went to camp in Maryborough, for the RACV Energy Breakthrough competition. The aim was to keep our trikes (recumbent bikes) on the track for 24 hours. We had three teams entered into the competition and our team names were Pedal to the Metal, Mach 17 and Not Fast But Furious.

There was a lot of work completed before we left for camp, as each team had to build and design their own trikes, learn the road rules, fundraise, create presentations, learn about the parts that make up the bike and, of course, train!

We went to camp with low expectations as no one knew what to expect. We arrived on the Thursday to hot weather and having to set up the camp site. It was hard work but we all pulled together and got the job done. Friday was a busy day as we needed to present our presentations to the judges as well as take our bikes through scrutineering in order to get the much anticipated RACV tested sticker, giving us clearance to race. Two bikes got through scrutineering easily, while Pedal to the Metal had to make some modifications to the bike before it was given the sticker. Friday night as the time trial for two hours. It was an opportunity for the riders to ride the track pre-race and get used to the conditions. The lap times also determined the starting grid for the race on Saturday afternoon.

The next two days were what everyone was anticipating. The race began on Saturday at 1.00pm, with many challenges ahead. The Year 10 team lost a few riders and the bikes got in a few accidents, but we strived for success with everyone ‘Encouraging Courage’. We got through the race, breaking our school records and earning the RACV Encouragement award for our team work and support of each other in pits and around the track. We broke the school record of 281 laps in 24 hours, and Pedal to the Metal set a new record of 326. There were a total of eight riders in the teams, and they were divided into shifts of four riders. While the small teams of four riders were in the pits and keeping the trikes on the road, the other four got a chance to rest and get ready for their next shifts. Meanwhile, the pit crew were helping the riders in and out of the trikes. When there was an accident, it was the pit crew’s responsibility to retrieve the trikes and fix them. Each rider’s hydration and nutrition was monitored before, during and after the race to ensure maximum performance.

Killester finished with some excellent results, coming 78th, 91st and 95th place overall. However, in the All Female division Not Fast But Furious finished in seventh place, Mach 17 finished in sixth place while Pedal to the Metal had a fantastic result finishing in fourth place.

Overall, we had a wonderful time on this camp. We went in with low expectations but came out loving the camp and trying to work out ways to be involved next year. We learnt so much about ourselves, our teams and this was the best camp we have been to.

Wednesday the 29th of November was a fulfilling day for the Year 10 students as we were given the opportunity to experience and understand what university has to offer for our future. Upon entering VCE or VCAL, many girls are still unsure regarding what they would like to do in their upcoming years. Throughout the morning we attentively listened to a presentation about why university is beneficial, how courses are set out and the alternative campuses and various courses offered by Monash. This was followed by an activity where students had to quickly think of answers to questions relating to different fields of study. There were many surprising answers. For instance, we learnt that 22% of the top 100 wealthiest people studied an engineering degree and that Hugh Jackman was a teacher prior to his acting career. After the presentation each class spilt and were given an insightful tour of the campus. Note only were the buildings big, but the campus itself was even bigger! As each class finished the tour, there was a chance for the girls to ask questions of the university students, which ultimately helped us to retrieve new information through the experiences of those who are a part of the university environment. Lunch was a great time of the day that all the girls looked forward to because, as a bonus, it was FREE!! We were given a $10 voucher to spend in the campus centre cafe, which honestly looked like a shopping centre. After having some time to relax, students got into groups of six to eight and completed the Campus Challenge. This Challenge consisted of 24 questions and the answers could be found around the university. It gave us freedom to explore and get to know what it would be like to attend Monash University through various questions relating to the buildings, facilities and bus services. The Challenge concluded our day and we headed back to school after saying our farewells to those who ran the day. It was an eventful experience that gave us a positive feel regarding life at university. It was especially eye opening to those who were unsure of their future prior to this excursion and helped the year level to gain insight into tertiary education.

2017 is rapidly drawing to a close. As girls finish with any books or materials they borrowed to help their studies, they are asked to promptly return them to the library. If any books have been lost they need to come and finalise this at the library desk. This must be sorted before they can receive the College Annual Magazine.

Students are also encouraged to borrow novels to read over the summer holidays. With so many new books coming in all the time they are bound to find some that will catch their interest.

A reminder to parents that books that are on student booklists are not available from the library.
