Mayor Steve Pellegrini almost always says it in nearly every speech he gives: Shop local.

But it seems residents in King Township, though they would like to follow his advice, aren’t.

That was the message in a com-prehensive survey carried out by the Township over eight weeks this past winter. More than 500 resi-dents told the town their thoughts in an online ShopKing survey con-ducted by King Township’s Eco-nomic Development Office that wound up in mid-March.

The big takeaway from the sur-vey was that about half the resi-dents of each village (44.1 per cent in King City, 51.8 per cent in Noble-ton, 57.6 per cent in Schomberg) “rarely or never” shop locally.

They said the reason they don’t is that the services or products they want simply aren’t available so they

have to go outside the municipality to buy them.

“Your voice has been heard,” said Pellegrini in a Township news release.

“We’re pleased that residents want to shop locally. Now we have to continue working hard at attract-ing businesses that will provide the goods and services residents cur-rently have to leave King to get.”

King’s Economic Development

Officer Jamie Smyth, who works at developing business relationships and aims to foster business growth in the township, said: “The survey was a good way for us to capture date on people’s local shopping habits. We will use the results as we continue to work on attracting and retaining businesses we know King residents are seeking and are a long-term and viable fit for King.”

King City, in particular, has seen

major business development in the last few years in the Dufferin street -King Road area and a Cop-pa’s supermarket, a major draw to the area, will be opening later this summer.

In total, 523 residents complet-ed the survey over the course of the eight weeks it was open for response from mid-January to mid-March. The survey was a direct out-come of the village revitalization forum held late last year.

The King Township Economic Development officer met with key business stakeholders from King City, Nobleton and Schomberg, who were asked about their vil-lages.

One of the items discussed was how to better understand the goods and services needs of King Township residents.

Little Abby Eveson is at it again. Now 3, the Schomberg girl

wants to keep on paying it for-ward, the way she has taught a whole community to do, well, vir-tually her entire life.

The youngster who spent much of her young existence in the Hospital for Sick Children due to a complex mix of four different heart conditions, is thanking the community once more on Satur-day, June 18. Dubbed We believe in Abby Family Day, it’s being called “a day we are giving back to say thanks to everyone that supported us, including Sick Kids”.

Dad Craig, mom Becky and older brother Charlie continue to

appreciate the love and support the entire community has provid-ed to the family during Abby’s time in hospital as she has dealt with her life-threatening conditions.

To help cope with the stress of their daughter’s medical con-ditions, Becky and Craig recom-mended people pay acts of kind-ness forward and many people have over the past number of months.

“It makes you feel good to know you are doing something for oth-ers,” said Becky Eveson last year.

They paid it forward them-selves while in hospital when they received money from a company to help with extra out-of-pocket expenses a number of months back. There was enough left over

that Becky was able to give five families at Sick Kids $500 each.

“We have received a lot of sup-

port and generosity from people. We’ve gotten letters in the mail from people with money and gift cards and it’s just nice to pay it forward,” said Eveson.

“You look forward to doing something nice for someone else and it just makes you feel better,” she said.

For the free event on June 18, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hickstead Park, 21 Summit Ridge in Schomberg, donations to the Hospital for Sick Children will be accepted. During the day there will be lots of family things to do including a barbecue and a chance to enjoy the splash pad which opened at the same event last year. And at 9 p.m., there will be a movie in the park.

COMMUNITY

There will be plenty of food, music and beer at this year’s King Craft Beer and Food Truck Festival, now in its third year in downtown King City.

The daylong event, which takes place Saturday at 25 Doctor’s Lane from noon to 9:30, features a dozen craft brewers with many more ales and lagers – there is even some cider to try out too – as well as 14 gourmet food trucks.

To keep you entertained, 10 musical acts will be hit-ting several stages during the entire day. The evening will be topped off by Canadian hit-makers Hollarado.

Last year’s event drew a whopping 6,000 people to a sun-soaked park as tempera-tures hit the mid-20s making for perfect late-spring condi-

tions.An all-ages pass for the

day is $5 while kids under 12 are admitted free. For $15, those 19-and-over (valid ID is required) get a 6-oz sample glass (first 1,500 guests only) plus three drink tickets for samples.

For $25, you get the glass, three drink tickets, and entry into the Lions Club $15,000 charity draw. You must pur-chase these tickets online as they are not available at the gate.

Jaugernaut entertains the crowd at King City Craft Beer & Food Truck Festival at the 2015 event. This year’s event is set for Saturday.

Beer, food trucks and music – together once again

ONLINE: For much more information, visit www.king.ca.

Page 6: King Connection, June 9, 2016

“I’m only here for the beer,” is a famous adver-tising slogan

from the early 1970s for a British product seered into my memory, per-haps because I used to read the football (soccer) magazines my late dad bought me every week.

More on that sport later.

For now though, you won’t want to miss this Saturday’s King Craft Beer and Food Truck Festival at 25 Doctor’s Lane from noon to 9:30 p.m.

And while you can choose to show up only for the beer, there is much more to enjoy than the suds – although with more than a dozen fine craft beers to sample, it’s OK if that’s your reason for coming out.

You can also take in fare from the 14 food trucks that offer all kinds of high-quality cui-sine and there is music throughout the day including hot Canadian band Hollerado headlin-ing the event.

The weather was fan-tastic at last year’s event and more than 6,000 had a ball. It’s an event you should make time for.

Starting tomorrow, one of the world’s great sports events kicks off in Paris.

France takes on Roma-nia at 3 p.m. at the Stade de France in the opener of the 24-team tourna-ment which runs until the final game Sunday, July 10.

This year’s expanded format has seen eight teams added from the 16 that traditionally take part making the EURO, as it’s called, the second largest soccer tourna-ment on the globe next to the 32-team World Cup.

Of particular excite-ment to many fans in

York Region will be the “home” countries they can support. Even if you aren’t a first-generation immigrant from say, Italy, Germany or Poland, and you have been here for two, three or even four generations, you can still support the “old” country.

And there are a lot of them to support.

Every team from the British Isles, except Scotland, is involved. Both Spain and Portugal are playing. Russia and Ukraine made it. The Czech Republic and Slo-vakia are both in. Croatia and Bosnia/Herzagovina qualified. So did Germa-ny, Belgium, Switzerland and Poland as well. Aus-tria and Hungary are in. And of course Italy and host France. Sweden and Turkey are represented too.

Then there are some interesting picks like Ice-land and Albania.

Certainly every team will have its fans but it will probably come down, as it almost always does to the giants, like Germany, France, Italy and, a favourite of mine, Belgium. Spain and Eng-land could also make the semifinals.

Look for Germany to win it all.

If that’s not enough soccer for you, the 100th anniversary of the Copa America is also on, fea-turing Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Colom-bia, Ecuador, Mexico, the United States Peru, Boliv-ia, Paraguay, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Haiti and Panama from North and South America play-ing in the United States right now. Canada did not qualify.

In all, excluding teams from Africa and Asia of course, 40 of the best teams in the world are playing, so it’s a great time to be a soccer fan.

A great time to be a soccer fanCOLUMN COLUMN

Marney Beck

Yes, we’re Baby Boomers; no, we’re not selling our home

ur local newspapers have been publishing the stories for years now and the head-lines all start to sound

the same: “Record sales in May keep York’s housing market hop-ping” (way back in June 2007); “York’s housing market stays hot” (Nov. 2011); “York house values highest in GTA: MPAC” July 2012; “York house values continue to rise” (July 2012).

I could go on, but you get the general idea.

Those headlines about prices climbing and our hot housing mar-ket are interspersed with headlines like these: “York housing supply fails to meet needs” (May 2012) or “Housing tops York seniors’ wor-ries “(May 2013).

It’s something everyone is talk-ing and worrying about, which is why we’re publishing the latest series of stories — Through the roof; a Metroland special report.

As we all know, the escalating housing market, ridiculous bidding wars and sky-high prices aren’t just happening in York Region, but across the GTA.

We know this issue is touching a chord with you, from letters to the editor and social media conversa-tions — and plain old over-the-back-fence discussions going on in every York Region community.

Take my own street in Rich-mond Hill — a microcosm of the housing market. On any given week, there are several homes up for sale or lease — and yes, some bear the “sold over asking” words on the signs.

The home directly beside my home was sold by longtime neigh-bours in December 2014, and a family lived there for about a year. Then they were gone, and appar-ently the house was advertised again for sale online, yet no tradi-tional realtor sign was seen.

The house has been empty for months now. I mow the dande-lion-filled grass just so it doesn’t make our adjoining front yard look bad. The backyard of the house is pretty overgrown and prospective families troop in and out of the

home on weekends taking a look, I presume.

Another neighbour across the street had contractors working on her home, and speculation ran rampant — is she moving? Renting? Or maybe just renovating?

And I’m getting those calls, too. I answer our home phone and

hear: “Hello, are you interested in selling your house?” No introduc-tory “How do you do, I’m so and so...” just straight to the point: “You selling”?

“No” is our answer. And here are some reasons why.

My husband and I love our home, the short walk to the theatre, grocery and drug stores, parks and other amenities, and while incredi-ble selling prices of other homes on our street give us pause for thought, we’re not ready to move for many years yet.

Yes, we’re Baby Boomers, and yes we’re staying in our homes as long as we can handle the stairs and the yard work.

My husband has had more than his share of health challenges, and depends on and greatly appreciates his doctors in our community — and our hospital. We hear stories about people moving to other plac-es in Ontario having trouble finding a doctor — even a family doctor.

That’s one good reason we’re staying put.

Another is our son, age 24. Although he has a full-time job, there’s no way he could afford an apartment in Richmond Hill with the high rents, much less enter the crazy housing market — even shar-ing a home purchase with friends.

So, hot housing market or not, we’re not selling.

For more information about Lyme disease or submitting a tick for identification visit york.ca/lymedisease

What is Lyme disease?Lymedisease is an illness caused by theBorrelia burgdorferibacteria that isspread through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick (deer tick). Lymedisease does not spread from human to human.

What are the symptoms?A circular rash referred to as a bull’s-eye rash could be one of the earliestsymptoms of an infection. If you develop a bull’s-eye rash, fever, chills orextreme fatigue or feel like you have the flu, see your health care provider.Be sure to tell them if you have been active outdoors. If left untreated, Lymedisease could lead to more serious symptoms affecting the central nervoussystem, brain or heart.

Treating Lyme diseaseLyme disease can be treated with antibiotics. Getting treatment in the earlystages of the disease is critical for full recovery.

What are ticks?Ticks are small bugs, the size of a sesame seed, which feed off the blood ofanimals and humans. They are generally active through the spring, summerand fall. They can be found on tall grasses and bushes and can attach

themselves to people or animals. Ticks do not fly andmove slowly. Most tick bites are painless. Ticks feedslowly and will attach themselves for 24 to 72 hours. They are most likely to spread infection after beingattached for 24 hours or more. Not all ticks are infectedwith the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, therefore, not all

tick bites will spread Lyme disease.

Where are blacklegged ticks found? The risk of Lyme disease is usually much greater in tick endemic areasbecause the probability of bites from infected ticks is much greater. In Ontario, blacklegged ticks are more commonly found in areas alongthe north shores of Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.Blacklegged ticks have also been found in York Region. York Region Public

Health will continue to conduct tick dragging at various locations across YorkRegion’s nine towns and cities. While the risk is low, it is possible to be infected with Lyme disease from thebite of a blacklegged tick almost anywhere in Ontario.Other established blacklegged tick populations and Lyme disease endemicareas include parts of British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec, New Brunswick,Nova Scotia, Northeast and upper Midwest United States and central Europe.

Protect yourself and your familyIt is important to protect yourself each time you are in a wooded or brushyarea. Follow these simple tips to protect yourself:• Wear long pants and long-sleeved tops that are light-coloured to helpspot ticks

• Tuck your pants into your socks• Use an insect repellent containing DEET and apply according tomanufacturer’s directions

• Search your body for ticks• Pay special attention to the groin, scalp, underarms andback• Remove attached ticks from your body as quickly as possible

Removing a tick• Remove it by grasping the tick with a set of tweezers as close as possibleto the skin and pull it straight out

• Do not squeeze the tick• Do not put anything on the tick or try to burn it off• Disinfect the area with rubbing alcohol• Place the tick in a moistened paper towel and put in a screw-topcontainer such as a plastic pill bottle or a plastic sealable baggie

• Store the container in a refrigerator or freezer until the tick can besubmitted to your local health unit for testing

• Call York Region Health Connection at 1-800-361-5653

COMMUNITY

By NaNcy HopkiNsoNSpecial to The Connection

On sunday, June 12 at 11:15 am, our guest speaker is Patricia Edmonds. This is how Pat described herself: “I am a retired lady of leisure. I have been a Licensed Lay Worship Leader since 2004, conducting 25-30 services annually. I am a Past Chair of Living Waters Presbytery and a past president of Toronto Conference UCW (United Church Women), a member of the National UCW Alumni and currently am recording secretary for Toronto Confer-ence UCW Executive. A few years ago I had the privilege of travelling to Cuba with a group of eight UCW mem-bers from Canada where we met and interacted with several wonderful groups of Cubans.

“I have been married for 53 years, am the mother of two grown daughters and grandmother of four young grandchildren who constant-ly delight and often exhaust me. I enjoy the opportuni-ties I have to lead worship

and share my experiences in many congregations across Toronto Conference.”

Our next Messy Church on June 14, 5 to 7 p.m., will have the theme “roads”. Do you have a big box that we could use to make a stand-in car? Although people travel around now in cars, in Bible times, they had to walk or to ride an animal. Journeys would have been much slow-er. The various activities will relate to roads and journeys and are suitable for a range of ages from two to early teens.

Messy Church contin-ues throughout the summer on every second Tuesday of the month. Messy Church includes dinner because we know that busy parents and/or grandparents need to have time to enjoy crafts with their children without wor-

rying about making a meal. For more info, contact me at 905-859-0761.

Later in June, our guest speaker will be Kathy Dakin (June 19 and 26).

In the summer, we join with Schomberg United. Throughout July, our services will be in Schomberg at 9:30 am, and throughout August, our services will be in Noble-ton at 11:15 am. On Sunday July 17th, there will be a bap-tism. On Sunday July 24th there is a congregational pic-nic at Jack and Kim Camp-bell’s. Phone Jack at 905-939-2992 for directions. We will gather at 11 am, sing some songs, have a short message, and then lunch at 11:30 am. Bring a salad or dessert. The BBQ and drinks will be sup-plied. There are walks that you can take and/or have a swim in the pool.

❚ contact For more info, visit our

website at nobletonunited-church.com, our Facebook page, or call our church at 905-859-3976.

Who’s your pick to win?The 2016 Euro, featuring 24 teams, kicks off later this week.

Here are 8 teams we feel have the best chance of winning

1 Germany: Pre-tournament favourites and reigning World Cup champions, they will be the team to beat in France.

2 Belgium: Enter tourna-ment ranked No. 2 in the world behind No. 1 Argen-tina. Strong squad, but haven’t proved themselves at highest level – yet.

3 France: Home country will have advantage of playing in front of tremen-dous support with very good club. Will be tough to beat.

4 Italy: Perennial contend-ers who have been build-ing a young, solid team that may be ready for prime time.

5 Spain: Have slipped a bit, but still have plenty of talent and can be danger-ous to any team.

6 England: Wayne Rooney, Jamie Vardy, Harry Kane give England a chance to do some damage in France.

7 Portugal: Any team with Cristiano Ronaldo, argu-ably world’s best player, has outside chance of contention.

8 Poland: Gave Germany some problems in qualify-ing so they could be tricky for opponents.

You’re invited to take a trip back through time and go right up to the present day with the McMichael Gallery’s latest exhibition.

Titled 50/50/50, the special exhi-bition is in honour of the gallery’s 50th anniversary – the actual date is July 8 -- but it also goes back from the mid-60s to exactly one century ago and stretches to 2016.

The artists chosen for the exhibit, Group of Seven founder AY Jackson and the most famous contemporary and friend of the group, Tom Thom-son, for 1916, Toronto’s Jack Bush for the mid-60s, and Vancouver artist Colleen Heslin for present-day work, offer a fascinating look at distant past, more recent past and present-day perspectives.

And that is just what Dr. Sarah Stanners, director of curatorial and collections at the McMichael Cana-dian Art Collection, was going for when she put together the massive exhibition.

“How can we tell these stories through powerful works of art,” she said as she took media around the exhibit for a tour in advance of its public opening last Saturday.

“Our audience is looking for tra-ditional Group of Seven and land-scape painting but we have to cul-tivate new audiences,” she noted in pointing to the Bush and Heslin parts of the exhibition, which offer a stark contrast to the work of Jackson and Thomson.

“Robert and Signe McMichael were opening a gallery in the mid-60s which focused on traditional landscape painting yet mid-60s in Canada was a riot of fantastic avant garde painting,” she said.

That’s where Jack Bush comes in.Where Dr. Laura Brandon, an

expert in war-time art with particu-lar knowledge of Jackson and Thom-son was brought aboard to curate the Jackson/Thomson 1916 section, Stanners’ expertise is in the mid-60s and the likes of Bush.

“There needed to be some signal of what was happening at that time (mid-60s),” she said.

“Let’s look at three distinct peri-ods. Let’s look at our core mid-60s period, go back 50 years, a critical point, and look at mid-60s and at 2016.”

That means a viewer goes from the landscapes and traditional images one expects from the well-

known and famous Group of Seven paintings to the “riot of colour” as Stanners describes it, of the large canvasses of 1960s Bush.

Bush paints in bright yellows, reds, greens, eye-catching images that light up the room. All the work is abstract.

“Five of the works here have never been seen before in Ontario,” said Stanners of the Bush paintings.

As for Heslin, her works have a Bush-like quality, however with a big twist.

She hand-dyes and sews fab-

rics together to seamlessly create a “painting” that has an interest-ing tactile look and feel. Her use of muted colours, especially vari-ous shades of grey, makes her work stand out.

Virtually all of the work Heslin created for the show was done in the past year, most of it in 2016.

Naomi Potter of the Esker Foun-dation of Calgary, who curated the Heslin section of the show, said she wanted to present a “conversation” between the work of Bush and Hes-lin.

“I thought the conversation that this work (Heslin’s) could have with Jack Bush’s work was a particularly interesting one that could bring rel-evance to Colleen’s practice but also a contemporary focus to Jack,” said Potter.

Stanners said she is hopeful many people will come to see the exhibi-tion so it will be at the McMichael until Jan. 8, 2017 allowing plenty of time to see it.

The magic number is 50 at the McMichael
