ELA FIELD TRIP: JOURNALISM

What: A group tour of KSNV news 3 NBC station in las vegas, nv

When: Friday, September 27, 2019 from 10:30 am -12:30

Where: 1500 Foremaster Lane, Las Vegas, NV 89101. After the tour, we will have lunch at a nearby park

Who: 8th grade students (20), and a teacher (Charity Marshall). We can only have 20 students. First come, first serve, so sign up soon!!

Details: They have a small lobby, so they kindly ask that guests do not arrive more than 15 minutes early. Guest parking is limited with most of the parking available on the street. Jen Rochford and/or Kacie Hackley will lead the tour.

WHAT IS A CLAIM?

• Look at the word in context.

• This person claims he knows you.

• So, you claim you don’t know what happened to my skateboard?

• He claims to be great at basketball.

• In your own words, what is a claim?

WHAT IS A CITATION?

• To cite means to point to something specific in the text.

• A quotation

HOW TO WRITE SHORT ANSWER RESPONSES

• Read the selection the question is asking about at least 2 times

• Read it out loud so that the words stay in your mind

• If it is a longer reading, such as a short story, skim the reading for important words and details

• Decide what details and quotes you are going to use from the reading to support your answer

• Type your response in a word processor that has spell check, such as Microsoft word

• Write at least 3-5 sentences. Write 1 sentence for each point that the question is worth.

• 4 points= at least 4 sentences (in 1 paragraph)

• 12 points = at least 12 sentences (in 3 paragraphs)

LET’S PRACTICE USING THE ACE METHOD!

• How to answer a short answer or essay question- use the ACE method

• Example of a short answer question from “Raymond’s Run”:

• At the end of “Raymond’s Run,” Squeaky has a different attitude about running and about her rival, Gretchen. Describe the actions that demonstrate these changed feelings. What role does conflict play in Squeaky’s changed attitude? Use events and details from the story to support your answer.

• Nouns may be classified as common or proper.

• A common noun names any person, animal, place, thing, or idea. It is not capitalized unless it is the first

word in a sentence.

• The girl met another girl on a street and talked about a race they would run the next day.

• A proper noun names a particular person, animal, place, thing, or idea. A proper noun is always capitalized.

• Squeaky met Gretchen on Broadway and talked about the race they would run on May Day.

• Possessive nouns show ownership or belonging. Both common and proper nouns can be turned into

possessive nouns by using an apostrophe (’). To form most possessive nouns, add an apostrophe “s.”

• Did Squeaky’s brother watch his sister’s race from the children’s section?

• If a plural noun already ends in s, form the possessive by adding just an apostrophe.

• The girls’ rivalry soured their friendship.

● Personal Narratives allow you to share your life with others and vicariously experience the things that happen around you. Your job as a writer is to put the reader in the midst of the action letting him or her live through an experience.

● Think about a family friend or relation that you admire. It should be someone who is a role model for you. Think of a time when they did something that showed their kindness or other good qualities.

● Think about a time when you had to something you didn’t really want to do. It could be a chore, a family day, or something in school. Write about one time when you were surprised at how much fun you had doing this.

● Think about a time you did something special with a brother, sister, family member, or friend. Sharing this event made you realized how close you were. Write about what made this time special.

● Your family celebrates special events such as birthdays, holidays, or other special events. Choose one family event and write a story about it.
