For its fifth edition, “ Le Caire mon amour ” comes back with an original proposal gathering foreign artists whose experiences of Cairo have strongly inspired their creation and egyptian artists who have lived for a time abroad.

Are egyptian artists influenced by occidental modernity ? Should we consider there is a contemporary occidental art and/or a contemporary oriental art ? What about the state of contemporary art in Cairo ? Does the diversity of nationali-ties bring a wide range of singular artists and works ?

Devant la profusion des peintures de Ahmed Nosseir, Isabelle et Anne ont fait le choix d’encadrer les tableaux avec des baguettes dorées. Elles ont ensuite réalisé un accrochage extrêmement dense de ses tableaux, en disposition décalée sur plusieurs rangs.

Cette exposition de tableaux ainsi présentée est en référence au mode d’accro-chage des oeuvres d’artistes vivants au XIXe siècle.

The external and interior heart anatomy from different perspective.

For the collage I used personal drawings, lithography, silkscreen and photo-graphy done between 2002 and 2010.

Gothic

The Mediterranean’s sea is identi-fied as a completely separate body of water. The characteristic of the gothic architecture, the ogival curves or the flying buttress is the graphic of the waves reading as a gothic fiction.

Les Mille et Un Caire - Thousand and One Cairo

Film de 83 minutes

Une évocation poétique et musicale de la capitale égyptienne.

Une histoire de fascination – mélange d’attirance et de répulsion pour la plus grande ville d’Afrique, mégalopole bruyante, puante, polluée, surpeuplée, étouffante, envahissante.

Une déambulation dans les rues du Caire, en compagnie de la musique du trio Afrogarage et de la caméra magique de Pio Corradi. La main y est partout à l’œuvre, elle fabrique, bricole, répare. On vend, on bonimente, on va à la mosquée, on ruse pour traverser les flots de voitures qui envahissent les rues. Les scènes cocasses se succèdent dans le plus grand naturel. On a toujours le temps pour boire le thé, fumer une chicha et refaire le monde. On sait goûter du temps, on sait partager un unique art de vivre.

Collage, 2012-2013.Quotidien romand du 12 décembre 2012, photo-graphie numérique couleur découpée, scotch, cadre. 50,5cm x 37cm.

Opium est inspiré d’une menace de mise en demeure de l’appartement du 7 rue Champollion, lieu d’expérimentation et d’exposition « Le Caire mon amour ».

Opium reprend l’esthétique d’un dispositif administartif. Une photographie représentant un immeuble et son panneau publicitaire en friche est placée sur la page économie d’un journal quotiden Romand.

L’applique tableau qui éclaire cette pièce est historiquement destinée aux peintures à l’huile.

Liquid Smoke

Liquid Smoke (Yishrib) explores contradictions of pleasure/pain, necessity/desire, repulsion/compulsion. In Egyptian colloquial, ‘ yishrib ’ means ‘ to drink ’ or ‘ to smoke ’. It explores the connec-tion between water and smoke.

29 cages, 1 oiseau en plastique.

Des cages d’oiseaux sont installées dans un passage sombre qui mène à une porte définitivement fermée. Contre la vitre à barreaux du haut de la porte, un oiseau en plastique bat des ailes.

Plus la batterie se décharge, plus les ailes de l’oiseau battent faiblement. L’oiseau est épuisé par le vain combat.

“ Trying to think the revolution is like waking up and trying to see the logic in a dream. ”

A film in search of the traces of Egyptian civilian resistance against colonial and military oppression, from 1952 - 2012, filmed on location in Cairo, Port Said and the Sinai desert. A script is discovered in a museum archive, for a controversial film made by the United Nations about the Suez crisis of 1956, which was banned and never screened. Intrigued by a possible connection to the present situation, the filmmaker travels to Egypt to uncover some truths about this document, and in the process reflects on the current revolution and the historical events that led up to it.

Yishrib

Cigarette butts, thread, fabric, 2013

Kerdahi’s collection of objects focuses on the non-monu-mental – objects which are inconspicuous but fundamental to her locus and context. They are otherwise forgettable, but in assembling them together, the works pronounce each object’s authority. In her most recent installation work, Yishrib (2013), she uses thousands of cigarette butts to construct an oversized DNA strand. Kerdahi airs cigarettes, worthy of recognition as symbols and subjects, through internal ruminations, sociopolitical observation, and historical reference.

Cinderella revisite le conte « Cendrillon ».

L’esthétique grossière de la céramique peinte rompt le charme de la féérie que le conte véhicule. L’aspect kitch et vulgaire est mis en évidence.

Sa présentation à même le sol est théâtra-lisée par un éclairage en douche.

Reproduction en céramique d’une paire de mules à l’échelle 1/1.

French nationality, born in Germany, lived extensively in Algeria, France, England, Australia, Japan, India, Thailand, Egypt.

The work as well as being inspired by the place I live in, is also to a great extend condi- tionned by my environement, the availbility of space, materials and personal finances. Instead of considering those elements as restricting, I see them as part of the work process and often the limitations become the inspiration. I am happy to work with different media, and explore new ideas and ways to express myself in the new context. I particuarly favour inte- ractive installations, where I set the frame work of the exhibition but the whole concept is realised with the participation of the viewers. I also found that people were keen to

express themselves if given a space to do so.

Nermine El Ansari (EGY)

Nermine El ansari was born in Suresnes (France) in 1975. She lives and works as a visual artist in Cairo (Egypt). In 1998 she received her diploma from the fine art school of Versailles (France) in painting. In 2002 she graduated from Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts (ENSBA) of Paris in multidis-ciplinary. In 2001, she was awarded a scho-larship to study at the” Instituto Superior de Arte”(ISA) in la Havana (Cuba) for six months. Her work has been presented in various exhi-bitions in Egypt and abroad.

Nermine El ansari’s works range from painting to animation, notebooks to printing, photo-graphy to digital live drawing performance. Her earlier pieces were primarily concerned with the body-in human and beast form-often presenting a distorted view of her subjects and exploring a series of dualities and inver-sions. Over the last 10 years, she has focused on the urban constructions, border, terri-tories and mapping – both real and imagined – and explores the binaries provoked by the urban landscape.

Isabelle Klaus *1971 vit et travaille à Genève et au Caire.

En 1998 elle obtient le diplôme de l’Ecole Supérieure d’Art Visuel de Genève.

Elle utilise différents mediums tels que la photographie, l’installation, le dessin, l’objet et récemment la performance.

Elle travaille également comme graphiste pour des productions cinématographiques et des ensembles de musique contemporaine.

De février à août 2011, elle est « artist-in-residence » au Caire. Sa rencontre avec Anne du Boistesselin l’amène à participer à la conception, réalisation et production des événements culturels que sont Le Caire mon amour.

Amanda Kerdahi M. uses video, installation, and performance to explore the connections between object and subject. She is interested in the question “who is moving whom?” Her work explores objects whose compound weight animates a human subject; thus Kerdahi’s work confronts the power relations between human subjects and material objects in quotidian rituals.

Amanda Kerdahi Matt is an Egyptian-American artist currently living in Cairo, Egypt. In 2005, she obtained a BFA in photography and a BS in psychology from the University of Houston, and in 2013, she completed an MFA from Transart Institute.

Est né en 1949 à Genève. Après avoir obtenu le diplôme fédéral de médecin, il entreprend des études professionnelles de contrebasse au Conservatoire de Lausanne.

Improvisateur

Dès 1975, il se consacre prioritairement à la musique improvisée comme contrebassiste, en participant à de nombreux groupes en Suisse romande, France, Europe de l’Est, ainsi qu’avec des musiciens américains. Il joue avec des musiciens comme Jacques Demierre, Hans Koch, Christy Doran, Alfred Zimmerlin, Louis Sclavis, Yves Robert, Archie Shepp. Avec différents groupes, il se produit dans de nombreux concerts ainsi que des festivals, en Europe, ex-Union Soviétique, Afrique, Inde. Il enregistre de nombreux CD.

Compositeur

Jacques Siron se fait connaître pour ses nombreux arrangements et compositions, prin-cipalement pour des ensembles de musique improvisée et de jazz (allant du duo au big band), mais également pour le théâtre, le cinéma, la danse, l’orchestre symphonique.

Enseignant et musicographe

Jacques Siron enseigne la musique improvisée. Il donne de nombreux stages et master classes d’improvisation, par exemple au Conservatoire du Caire. Il a écrit plusieurs ouvrages de référence sur le jazz et l’improvisation, dont La Partition Intérieure, ainsi que le Dictionnaire des mots de la musique.

Collaboration à des spectacles en création

En tant qu’improvisateur, compositeur, performer et/ou acteur, Jacques Siron colla-bore volontiers avec des acteurs, des danseurs, des plasticiens, des vidéastes. Par exemple, il a présenté au Caire une performance avec des photos qu’il a prises de la ville, accom-pagnées par de la musique en direct.

Films

Jacques Siron a souvent réalisé seul ou avec d’autres musiciens des musiques de film, notamment pour accompagner des films muets. En Il réalise son premier long métrage, Pane per Tutti, un portrait muet de la ville de Rome accompagné avec de la musique en direct. Thèbes à l’ombre de la tombe est son second long métrage, tourné à Luxor dans les villages de Gurna avant leur démolition. Ce film a été présenté au festival d’Ismailya.

Born in Norwich, 1983 and currently living between London and Lille. Henderson Received a First Class BA Honours in Film and Video from London College of Communication in 2007 - where he continues his research as a visiting lecturer and a PhD candidate supervised by William Raban and Dr. Jonathan Lahey Dronsfield from 2009 until the present. From 2011 – 2013 Henderson has been studying for a diploma in Cinema and Visual Arts at Le Fresnoy Studio National des Arts Contemporains. For the year 2013, Henderson was awarded an Entente Cordiale scholarship from the French Embassy in London. Henderson has shown his work natio-nally and internationally, including Rotterdam International Film Festival, CPH:DOX, Le Printemps de Septembre, Belo Horizonte Film Festival, Jihlava Documentary Festival, EMAF Osnabrueck, The British Film Institute, Centre Pompidou, Museo Reina Sofia, Tate Modern and Whitechapel Gallery.
