On May 9th each year, the people of Jersey continue to celebrate the anniversary of the Liberation of the Island from the occupying forces of World War II. Join islanders to celebrate with a variety of activities and events, including heritage walks, access to WWII attractions, nostalgic entertainment and a commemorative service.

The castle was home to Sir Walter Raleigh while he was Governor of Jersey, from 1600 until 1603, and the future King Charles II during the English Civil War. During the German Occupation, the castle was refortified and used as one of the strong points commanding the sea approaches to St Helier. Climb the battlements, explore the turrets and bunkers and discover the Hermitage where St Helier is thought to have lived around 550 A.D. The castle is accessible at low tide by foot or by the castle ferries, Charming Betty and Charming Nancy, which will transport you across at low or high tide (a small charge applies).www.jerseyheritage.org

The Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles to have been occupied during World War II. Following the allied victory, Jersey was left strewn with fortifications after Hitler had attempted to make it a fortress. The majority of these fortifications remain intact, with many of them fully restored to their wartime state.

On 8th May 1945, Winston Churchill made his now famous speech, including the words “…and our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed today”. This was greeted with so much excitement that the Bailiff, Alexander Coutanche, had to ask for patience and restraint among islanders. Early the following morning, a British destroyer was sighted coming into St Aubin’s Bay and word spread that the Liberation of Jersey had begun. The arrival of the naval officers who took down the swastika that flew above the Pomme d’Or Hotel and raised the Union flag, confirmed to a population which had lived through an occupation lasting almost five years that their freedom had come at last.

Visitors will also be able to go on a conducted tour of the turbot farm which is situated in an original WWII German bunker – entry to the market is free, but there is a £4 per person charge for the conducted tours which were recently featured on ITV’s ‘Ade in Britain’. Martin Parr is one of the most famous British Photographers working today. His photographs deal with themes of consumerism, leisure, travel and communication in the context of the contemporary global mediascape. Parr’s extensive series of work on these themes defy established categories of artistic and commercial photographic practice using an original visual language of humour, garish colours and surprising angles that continues to influence a younger generation of photographers. Extending Parr’s examination of national and regional characteristics, this exhibition presents a specially commissioned series of photographs of Jersey’s Liberation Day celebrations in 2013 alongside photographs made in Guernsey on 9th May 2012. On 8th May 1945, Winston Churchill made his now famous speech, including the words “…and our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed today”. This was greeted with so much excitement that the Bailiff, Alexander Coutanche, had to ask for patience and restraint among islanders. Early the following morning, a British destroyer was sighted coming into St Aubin’s Bay and word spread that the Liberation of Jersey had begun. The arrival of the naval officers who took down the swastika that flew above the Pomme d’Or Hotel and raised the Union flag, confirmed to a population which had lived through an occupation lasting almost five years that their freedom had come at last.
On May 9th each year, the people of Jersey continue to celebrate the anniversary of the Liberation of the Island from the occupying forces of World War II. Join islanders to celebrate with a variety of activities and events, including heritage walks, access to WWII attractions, nostalgic entertainment and a commemorative service.

The castle was home to Sir Walter Raleigh while he was Governor of Jersey, from 1600 until 1603, and the future King Charles II during the English Civil War. During the German Occupation, the castle was refortified and used as one of the strong points commanding the sea approaches to St Helier. Climb the battlements, explore the turrets and bunkers and discover the Hermitage where St Helier is thought to have lived around 550 A.D. Following the allied victory, Jersey was left strewn with fortifications after Hitler had attempted to make it a fortress. The majority of these fortifications remain intact, with many of them fully restored to their wartime state.
