Tom was featured in the July
issue of Running Times magazine.
He was also voted athlete of the
week on New Jersey 101.5 radio
station. Tom even earned a spot
at the Nike Cross Nationals
meet in Oregon. In an article in
the Independent newspaper
Tom said, ―I wish my team-
mates had made it.‖ Tom is
a great athlete, but also
cares about his team. We
all wish Tom the best of
luck running at Providence
College in Rhode Island
where he will be attending
in the fall. His coaches and
team will miss him along with the
other seniors on the team.
Tom O’Neill is High School
North’s best cross country run-
ner. He is a senior. This year’s
season has been a great one for
him and the whole team. Tom’s
running career started here at
Thorne. He still holds his group
three title at the meet of Cham-
pions. He ran the fastest time at
the meet. Many of his team-
mates say that he is a team
player always hoping that not
only he does well but the team
as well. Tom cannot hear while
racing, because he is deaf and
can’t wear his expensive cochle-
ar implant while running as it
may get damaged from perspi-
ration. His coaches, Mr. Piro
and Mr. Silvestri, use white
boards to communicate with him
Sirens were heard from
blocks away, 10-12 trucks
riding in behind a lot of police
cars and vans. People came
out and some sang the Na-
tional Anthem. Then the prin-
cipal talked about the Battle
of the Bulge flag then it was
put up while taps was being
played then the 6th grade
went into the cafeteria. The
7th and 8th grade went into
the auditorium to witness Mr.
Olausen give a speech on
Wreaths Across America,
and how much of an Honor it
is that our school is the only
school in New Jersey to re-
ceive such an honor. Rising
Voices sang beautiful Christ-
mas Carols to celebrate the
season, and to welcome the
veterans. Thorne’s own Med-
al of Honor Band played tra-
ditional, however, very mov-
ing Christmas Carols to hon-
or the Christmas that the
fallen veterans will never
have. Then as nobody ex-
pected The First Lady of
Maine rode all the way to
Thorne on nothing more than
a motorcycle. The First Lady
made an honorable speech
that really flattered the
Thorne Student Body. Lastly,
Buddy Thorne’s sister, Edith,
stepped up and accepted her
award, then thanked all the
veterans, stating how proud
she is of Thorne and how
proud ―Buddy‖ would have
been. Mrs. Edith Thorne’s
speech moved and inspired
many people, especially the
student s of Thorne.
Wreaths Across America is
an association that started in
1992. Annually they bring
wreaths from Maine to Ar-
lington National Cemetery in
a truck convoy. When they
arrive at Arlington National
Cemetery, a wreath is placed
on every grave to show re-
spect. us.

Officer James Fay, a Thorne Graduate,
and his 11 year old bomb sniffing dog,
Falko, demonstrated their daily jobs to
three classes in the school.
They have been working together for
over 10 years and their primary responsi-
bilities are to locate bombs, gun powder
etc. Falko only has one toy, a tightly
rolled up towel, which acts as a motivator
for Falko to find the smell he was trained
to find. When he finds the smell, he is
rewarded by playing tug of war with his
partner Officer Fay, and then is able to
play with the towel alone, typically ripping
it to shreds.
To demonstrate his skills, Officer Fay hid
a small vile of gun powder in the ice
cream machine on the light side of the
cafeteria. Falko was escorted from the K-
9 truck and he went to work. He circled
the light side of the cafeteria, using his
nose to guide his way. When he reached
the ice cream machine, he passed it,
stopped and quickly returned. He then
sat down next to the machine and waited
for Officer Fay to come play with him
with his one toy, the rolled up towel.
Officer Fay explained that Falko must be
tested every month to make sure he is
still up to the task of locating bombs.
Once he is not able to anymore, Falko
will retire.
Classes were shown Falko's grooming kit,
first aid kit, his muzzle that he only wears
at the vet, his harness that he wears if he
is on a roof or helicopter, and his bullet
proof K-9 vest.
Students were given the opportunity to
pet and take pictures with Falco after the
demonstration was over. ―It was so
cool!‖ was said by many who were lucky
enough to witness this demonstration.
When Officer Fay was asked if he enjoys
coming to Thorne he quickly responded.
"It is always a pleasure to bring Falko to
Thorne Middle School for our demonstra-
tion. It is always nice to "give back". As a
product of the Middletown School District
( Middletown North Class of 1988 ), and
more importantly a former Thorne stu-
dent, I take great pride in sharing my ca-
reer accomplishments with the students
of Thorne Middle School. He went on
to say ―I find my work with Falko to be
very rewarding. We have a great respon-
sibility to protect the citizens of Mon-
mouth County. This is a responsibility I
take very seriously.‖
All we can say is ―thank you for coming to
Thorne Middle School and thank you for
your service to our community.‖

Thorne is very fortunate to have a few
Special Needs classes. The students who
are enrolled in these classes go to class,
they have rigorous work to do, earn
grades, eat in cafeteria and participate in
gym and electives. In other words, these
kids are just like everyone else in the
school. So how are they different?
Sometimes they do not see things the
way you and I may, and sometimes they
need a extra help. They also learn dif-
ferently and are working on areas that
they individually need to learn. That still
makes them the same as the other stu-
dents in the building because we do not
see things the same or feel the same
about things and at times we may also
need some additional help too.
I am currently a member of Circle of
Friends, an organization at Thorne. In
Circle of Friends you get to really con-
nect with these students. For 6th and
7th grade members you get to connect
at lunchtime on Tuesdays. The 8th grad-
ers in the school get to play Just Dance
on Friday Mornings during homeroom.

this fabulous group? You have to be
nominated. Skills you should have to
be part of this group are people who
are good with others, and treat them
respectfully. Any questions about Cir-

In The Style of A Princess
The Fashions of Diana & Kate
by Maura DeRose
The Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Cambridge are both style icons of their time. They managed to update classic
styles to what was popular and incorporate timeless elements into their personal styles.
Kate Middleton
The duchess of Cambridge also looks
classic, put together, and chic but
makes this style modern.
Royal Similarities
The two princess-
es can be com-
pared to one an-
other because of
the similar con-
cepts behind their
styles, and they
have even worn
some very similar
outfits.
Princess Diana
The Princess of Wales certainly rep-
resents the fashions
of the 80’s and 90’s, but there is also
something timeless about her clothes.
She looked chic and put together, but
never stuffy. There was even some-
thing daring
about her
style
(Necklaces
tied around
her head!).
Her style was
classic with a
twist.
Princess Diana continues to influence
modern fashions, even inspiring the
likes of Rihanna, who is a current
fashion icon.
The princesses also had some unfor-
gettable evening wear moments,
dresses that will remain in the history
books of fashion.
Much like Queen Victoria who in-
spired and gave her name to an era,
Princess Diana and Kate Middleton
have begun to leave their marks- in
fashion and kindness.

This movie was spectacular.
The acting was amazing. How
the actors could portray certain
emotions was shocking and
exciting. The film had the per-
fect amount of sadness, action,
romance, mystery and, at cer-
tain scenes, comedy. It had your
heart racing and breaking. The
actors all played their charac-
ters exceedingly well and
showed off and proved their
romance, humor, horror,, mys-
tery and action. In addition to
that, there were also many plot
twists that would make you so
shocked. So in my opinion,
Divergent was a spectacular
film.

Divergent, in all, was a fantastic

The movie starts right where the last

the end Smaug is released from the
mountain. That is where the movie
ends.
When the lights went on the theater,

St. Patrick’s Day
By Julia Fuchs
We all obviously know the story of St. Pat-
rick’s day. I wrote all about it in last years
issue. This year I would like to spice things
up a bit, this year I am going to give you
ways to celebrate St. Patrick's day.
Learn a little history about the Holiday.
This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to
dig into the religious story of it. Even Though
St. Patrick’s day is a Christian feast day there
are other less religious versions of the story.
They may not be as accurate but they’re still
fun to read.
Go Green!
No, by that I do not mean Earth Day green.
Wear all the green you can, maybe a ―Kiss
me I’m Irish‖ Tee Shirt, or a shirt with clo-
vers on it. Even if you aren’t Irish, or you
don’t have any traditional Irish St. Patrick’s
Day Tee Shirt, you should still wear green if
you wish to celebrate. Green is the St. Pat-
rick’s Day color.
Accessorize!
This is my favorite way to celebrate! Go out
and get a leprechaun hat! Celebrate the fun
myths of St. Patrick’s Day! Get an Irish pin
such as a clover, a flag etc. If you’re up for it
go dressed as a leprechaun! Get that red
beard, the green hat, and those pointy shoes.
If you want to go all out maybe spray your
hair green, or paint your face to match the
colors of the Irish flag. Can’t buy any of this?
That’s no hassle! DIY St. Patty’s Day acces-
sories are extremely easy to make, especially
with print out crafts. Even though they may
seem childish, it adds on to the fun!
Learn some Irish phrases
As a huge fan of One Direction (especially
Niall Horan aka the Irish one) I find this idea
to be very easy. If you are a fan of One Direc-
tion all you have to do is listen closely to
some of the things Niall says. However if you
aren’t a ―Directional‖ it can still be just as
easy! Simply Google Irish phrases you can use
to celebrate Saint Patties Day! It’s especially
easy because Irish people speak English, they
just use it a little differently. Maybe next time
you greet your friends say ―What the Craic?‖
instead of ―What’s up?‖.
Learn an Irish Dance
Irish Dancing is a fun way to celebrate, burn
calories, and impress your friends and family.
It is really simple. Learning how to Irish Dance
can be done in no time if you follow the steps
correctly. You can either get a book, or an
article on how to Irish dance or get a video
up on YouTube. If you’re good at reading and
following directions I would recommend a
book or article. However most people are
better at learning how to do things by watch-
ing a video. For people like that I would highly
recommend a YouTube video.
Use these tips so this year you can
have ―A whale of a time‖ on St. Patrick’s Day!
I know I’m going to.

A Career in the Books
By James Davis
Anything can be incredible, but all things have
to come to a close. Derek Sanderson Jeter
started off slow but progressed to become
on of the best Yankees in the history of ma-
jor league baseball (MLB). He is nicknamed
―Mr. November‖ for a reason, if you look
back at his statistics, you can certainly tell
why. With only one year left,
many will look back at his ca-
reer saying ―wow! That is
Amazing!‖ Derek Jeter is retir-
ing for a reason; as a result,
history will have a whole lot to
look back on.
It all started on June 26, 1974,
in a small county in New Jersey named
Pequannock. Jeter grew up with a younger
sister . Jeter moved to Michigan when he
was 4 and advanced from there. He grew up
and had an offer to go to University of Michi-
gan. He later denied and entered the 1992
MLB draft. Jeter was drafted 6th overall by
the New York Yankees. High expectations
were held for Jeter throughout his first year, and
the rest of his career. One year, Derek was sent
down to the minors with all-time great Yankee
Mariano Rivera. Once the came back though,
both men advanced on their careers. ―there are
many people who have more talent than myself,
but there is not excuse to say that somebody
worked harder than I,‖ says
Jeter.
Derek was unstoppable for the
rest of his career. He became
ninth on the all-time hits list
with 3,316 and with on season,
left there could be more left in
his to move up in the rankings.
Derek has won 5 world series championships,
including on finals most valuable player (MVP). In
addition he has been selected for 13 all-Star ap-
pearances; particularly, the 2000 All-Star game
that he hit a home run that clinched him an All-
Star MVP. Besides all this, Jeter will be remem-
bered a stunning player and a teammate that will
go down in the history of the New York Yan-
kees.
L I O N S R O A R
December, January, and February
a typically known as the winter
months here in the northeast.
These months can be fun and
exciting to you or depressing and
annoying. Your feelings all de-
pend on your feeling toward this
time of the year. Some people
(myself included) love the Winter
Season. How can you beat wear-
ing cozy warm sweaters, sipping
hot chocolate, sledding, snowball
fights, and all the joy of the holi-
day season? I can name one way;
The Winter Itch.
Why does the Winter Itch occur?
Good question, if you are feeling
really itchy at this time of the year
it’s most likely due to lack of
moisture in the air. In the spring,
summer and autumn, humidity
keeps moisture in the air. In
the winter the cold air keeps
humidity from getting to our
skin. Blasting furnaces and the
freezing air temperatures, are
no help to your skin either.
For people who tend not to
moisturize winter itch can be
even worse.
Here are some helpful ways
to fight winter itch.
Humidify your home, by
purchasing a portable
humidifier (with your
parent’s permission). The
portable humidifier will
add moisture into your
home, thus making your
skin less dry.
Use an Oil Based Moist-
urizer, ( I recommend
E.O.S For hands) Oint-
ments and heavy creams
seal water in the skin and
preserve moisture well,
especially in frigid low
humidity temperatures.
Take quick showers.
Spending less time in the
shower helps the envi-
ronment and is also good
for your skin. Try to
spend no more than ten
minutes bathing, then
quickly dry off and mois-
turize immediately after.
So next time you’re feeling
down because of the winter
itch, use these tips for quick,
guaranteed results.
