How to create a Lesson activity

Introduction

Plan and storyboard your lesson. Lesson is a series of content pages and quiz or question pages. Due to the non-linear nature of lessons it is recommended that you invest in planning your lesson. Sketch out the content pages, questions, learning paths. Gather the content for your lesson – multimedia, text, instructions, questions etc. You should have a clear idea beforehand of what you want to do with this Lesson. Is it to be a graded, linear learning experience? Or an ungraded, non-linear practice session? Will students be able to go back and revisit areas or is it just a once-only opportunity?

Navigate to the subject 1. On the top right of the page, select Turn editing on

2. Navigate to the week / section you would like to add a Lesson and select Add an activity or resource.

Add a lesson 1. From the menu that appears, select Lesson 2. Select Add

Complete Lesson Settings

Fill in the Lesson’s details

1. Fill in the name of the Lesson in the ‘name’ section.

2. In Description section enter the information relating to the content that is required for the students.

Complete Appearance Settings

Appearance settings control the appearance of elements of the Lesson to students. After selecting the Show more toggle link you will see the following settings options:

1. Linked media allows a media file that is displayed on each page of the Lesson.

2. Progress bar allows students the see how far they have progressed through the Lesson.

3. Display ongoing score displays to students their score if grades or poins have been allocated to quiz questions.

4. A table of contents will be displayed to students if Display menu is selected.

5. Maximum Grade to display menu allows students, who reach specific grade, to see the Lesson menu.

6. Slideshow, if selected, displays the lesson as a slideshow with fixed height and width.

7. You can set the Maximum number of answers to display in the Lesson.

8. If enabled, the Use default feedback default responses can be set to indicate to students the correct or incorrect answer.

9. You can end the Lesson with a Link to next activity in Moodle.

Availability

You can control the time when students can see the lesson content and deadlines for compeltion of lesson, as well as setting timelimits for completion in the Availability settings

Flow Control

Flow control lets you set the way students interact with the question content on Lesson. After selecting the Show more toggle link you will see the following settings options:

1. Allow student review lets you select whether students can review the content once they have finlished

2. Provide option to try question again gives studets the option to attempt an incorrect question again (for no point credit)

3. Maximum number of attempts controls the amount of attempts students can make on questions

4. Action after correct answer when answered correctly, there are 3 options for the following page: [1] Normal - Follow lesson path, [2] Show an unseen page - Pages are shown in a random order with no page shown twice, [3] Show an unanswered page - Pages are shown in a random order, with pages containing unanswered questions shown again.

5. Number of pages to show This setting specifies the number of pages shown in a lesson. It is only applicable for lessons with pages shown in a random order (when "Action after correct answer" is set to "Show an unseen page" or "Show an unanswered page"). If set to zero (0), then all pages are shown.

Grade

Grade controls the way grading, if required is managed in Lesson.

1. Grade sets the type of grading and maximum grade

2. Grade category refers to any categories defined in the gradebook

3. Grade to pass indicates the minimum pass reuirements for students

4. A Practice lesson will not appear in the gradebook or go towards marks

5. Custom scoringallows you to give different points for answer

6. Re-takes allowed sets the ability for students to undertake lesson once or re-take

7. Handling of retakes will set the student score to mean of highest attempt

8. Minimum number of questions sets the minimum number of questions used to calculate a score.

Common Module Settings

Common module settings control whether content in visible to students and allows you to restrict content to student groups.

Restrict Access

Restrict access allow you to control access based on date, grade, users and activity completion.

Activity Completion

If Activity completion has been activated in your subject settings, it will appear in your activity or resource settings. You can elect for a student to mark the activity as completed or for graded items automatically indicate completion to students. Activity completion is indicated by a check box to the right of the activity on the home page.

Add Content Pages to the Lesson

Add Content Page

The Lesson: module has two basic content types: content page and question page.

1. To add a content page click on the Lesson Module you have created.

2. When you first create your lesson you will see the What would you like to do first? Screen.

Add Content using the Text Editor 1. Give the Page a Title.

2. Page contents can be added in the text editor which allows you to format your content similar to a word document.

3. Embed codes for multimedia and widgets can be added

by selecting code view icons from the WYSIWYG menu

Add Lesson Pathway

You can select one or multiple pathways for students to take from the content page.

1. For one or multiple pathways select the Content 1,2,3,4 as required. Complete Description which is the description that will appear on the button on the content page and Jump select the page within the Lesson that the student will be taken to.

Select Question Type

Question page allows you to select the question types

a) Multiple Choice b) Essay c) Matching d) Numerical e) Short Answer f) True/False

In Select question type and Add a question page.

Type of questions

Essay allows you to create a long answer free field question type. To create an Essay question complete Page title, Page contents for question, select next page students will Jump to on completion of question and a Score for the question (available if custom scoring is selected in Lesson appearance settings). Save Page.

Multiple Choice allows you to create multiple choice selections for students (maximum number of options is controlled in appearance settings). To create a Multiple Choice question complete Page title, Page contents for question. Enter answers in Answer options, feedback in Response. Select next page students will Jump to based on their response of question and a Score for the question (available if custom scoring is selected in Lesson appearance settings). Save Page.

Matching question type allows you to create a matching pair exercise for students. To create a Matching question complete Page title, Page contents for question. Select next page students will Jump to based on Correct response or Wrong response. Create Matching pairs (maximum number of options is controlled in appearance settings). Save Page.

Numerical allows you to create numerical multiple choice selections for students (maximum number of options is controlled in appearance settings). To create a Numerical question complete Page title, Page contents for question. Enter answers in Answer options, feedback in Response. Select next page students will Jump to based on their response of question and a Score for the question (available if custom scoring is selected in Lesson appearance settings). Save Page.

Short answer allows you to create a short answer limited free field question type. To create a Short answer question complete Page title, Page contents for question. Create a series of suggested answers that can be used to filter/evaluate students’ responses. Depending on match, select next page students will Jump to on completion of question and a Score for the question (available if custom scoring is selected in Lesson appearance settings). Save Page.

True/False question type allows you to a binary options exercise for students. To create a True/False question complete Page title, Page contents for question. Select Correct response or Wrong response and enter feedback in Response. Select the next page students will Jump to based on answer. Save Page.

About Branches and Clusters

Clusters are an advanced feature that allows you to create sets of question pages which will be provided to students randomly.

Branches can be used in a similar way chapters in a book would be used to organize groups of content and questions pages.

Editing the Lesson

Pages and Order

You can easily change the order of pages in Lesson. Make sure you are in Edit mode and Collapsed setting is selected. You will see the Page title, Page type and where the page leads to next under Jump and an Actions menu.

Previewing the Lesson

Select Preview

To preview the entire lesson select Preview from the top menu when you are in the lesson.

Reports from Lesson

Select Reports

To preview reports from the lesson select Reports from the top menu when you are in the lesson. The default page provides you with an Overview of Lesson attempts.

Detailed Statistics

Detailed statistics provides page by page statistics of the lesson for a cohort of students.

Grade Essays in Lesson

Select Grade Essays

To grade any essay submitted through an Essay question page, select Grade Essays from the top menu when you are in the lesson. A list of submissions students will appear. You can enter a score of the Essay if set in question appearance and question settings. Students must complete the Lesson module before their essay is available to grade.

Ending a Lesson

Add an End of Lesson Page

To bring the lesson to a close, select the End of Lesson option from the Jump menu on any relevant pages. The student will then see a generic message as in the next screenshot, with a direction back to the main course page or to view their grades.

You can select End of Lesson from any page in the lesson from the Jump menu.
