As a rule, I avoid commenting on subjects beyond the scope of our Lodge business.
But given the situation in the world, especially in our own country, I am directed at
this time of year towards the lyrics of the Transiberian Orchestra’s “Christmas Eve
Sarejevo.” An angel has been sent by God to report on the situation on Earth. This is
what he found: AND IN THE GRADENS WHERE THE CHILDREN PLAYED
NOW ONLY SOLDIERS TROD
AND STRANGER STILL, HE HEARD SOME SAY
THAT THEY WERE KILLING FOR THEIR GOD
NOW THE ANGEL HEARD GOD SPEAK MANY TIMES
AND HE HAD ALWAYS PAID ATTENTION
BUT THIS KILLING OF ONE’S NEIGHBOR
WAS SOMETHING THE LORD HAD NEVER MENTIONED
BUT AS HE NEARED THE EARTH OF A RECENT BATTLEGROUND
FROM AMONG THE RUINS HE ONCE MORE HEARD THE SOUND
IT WAS A SINGLE CELLO PLAYING A FORGOTTEN CHRISTMAS SONG
AND EVEN ON THAT BATTLEFIELD THAT SONG SOMEHOW BELONGED
AND AS HE FLEW AWAY THE ANGEL DID TAKE NOTE
THAT WHERE HE FOUND MUSIC PLAYED
ONE COULD ALWAYS FIND HOPE
Turn up the music. Merry Christmas, RidgeRidgeRidgeRidge

LODGE LORE The Holiday Season is in full swing, and so is the planning for Wausau Elks Lodge 248’s oldest local charity - Goodfellowship. While the beginning of this charity is not entirely clear, it appears that the program is nearing its Centennial Year. In History.....Wausau Elks Lodge #248 by A.E. McDowell written in 1956 he wrote “... shortly after 1918 Elks Lodge No. 248 inaugurated a series of “good works” in keeping with the avowed purposes of the Lodge. The “kids” party at Christmas time was begun. What is more, the Elks provided food for the hungry, shelter for the homeless, baskets for the poor during the Holidays.... This was the forerunner of Goodfellowship”. It should also be noted that it was on Dec. 1, 1919 that fire destroyed the house in which Elks Lodge 248 met, and the raising of funds for our present building needed to begin. Each year funds are raised to purchase new clothing for needy children in the Wausau area. Parents are asked about the clothing needed, children’s favorite colors, or favorite cartoon/superhero figures. This year the goal is to help 100 children. To do this $125.00 per child needs to be raised. Food baskets and other items are donated by members as well. The gifts are wrapped by the families sponsor and will be delivered by Santa and his helpers on December 15. Several members have shared that this program was what brought them to become members of our Lodge. They said that they remembered while growing up hard times that their families had experienced due to deaths in the family, unemployment, or other calamities. The Elks showing up with Santa to deliver much needed clothing and food remained in their memories as linked to bringing some happiness into their lives, and so by joining the Lodge and supporting the program they could pay it forward.

GOOD FELLOWSHIP NEWS We now have captains for the 31 families with 100 children that that we are buying clothing for as well as a ham for each family. We will again have seven Santa’s to deliver the presents on Saturday December 15th. Your response to our letter requesting donations has been great, but we have not reached our goal, so if you have-n’t sent in your donation please do so soon so we can reach our 3160 goal to take care of the children. We will have a collection table in the lobby on Friday nights and family nights and will also be holding a 50/50 raffle each evening. We are also selling hand- made pens that have been donated to Good Fellowship by member Orville Dabler.
