Nursery Page 1 Nursery Home Learning Grid Week 6 week beginning 18 th May 2020 Mon 18 th May: Understanding the World including Maths and Literacy Activity : Choose some flowers form the garden or on a walk e.g. 5 of each type. Take them home and place them into a plastic container. Explain to your child we would like to make ice and take their suggestions on how to do this e.g. add water and put them in the freezer. The next day have a look at the ice and talk about what it feels like. Put it somewhere to watch it melt. How can you stop it melting so quickly? How can you speed up the melting process? Maths Activity: use an outline of a shape and ask your child to fill it with small objects. These could be found outside or inside the home. Can they fill it without any gaps? Literacy Activity: Go on a particular letter sound treasure hunt e.g. c/k. What can you find that starts with the sound ‘c’? Pretend to play castanets above our head and say ‘c’ e.g. cup, kangaroo, cake, coat. There is a colouring sheet attached. Tuesday 19 th May: Expressive Art and Design including Maths and Literacy Activity: Take part in a listening game to listen for sounds in words e.g. syllable clapping. This can be done at different points in the week. Look at the chart (see attached) and talk about the different pictures asking your child to name them. Model clapping their name, family members and animals e.g. mum-my, dad-dy, li-on, el-e-phant. Can you child clap the syllables? Maths Activity: Use paper bun cases outside and play with soil to make natural cakes. Add flowers, feathers and leaves that the children find. Talk about how many cakes they have made e.g. how many with daisies on? How many with just grass? How many altogether? Is that enough for everyone in the family or too many? Literacy Activity: Go on a particular letter sound treasure hunt e.g. e. What can you find that starts with the sound ‘e’? Use two hands and pretend to crack an egg as you say ‘e’ e.g. egg, elbow, elephant. There is a colouring sheet attached. Wednesday 20 th May: Personal, Social and Emotional Development including Maths and Literacy Activity: Make some natural paintbrushes. Go outside and collect some sticks and different types of foliage, leaves, feathers or grasses. Attach them to the sticks using elastic bands or tied grass. Then once tied dip them in water or paint and make different marks. Ask your child to tell you which one they prefer to use and words to describe the different marks. Thursday 21st May: Communication and Language including Maths and Literacy Activity: Make a kite and enjoy playing with it

Thursday 21st May: Communication and Language including Maths and Literacy

Activity: Make a kite and enjoy playing with it outside. Use two sticks to make a cross and attach it to a diamond shape of paper/card or cut up a plastic bag for a rainy day kite! Decorate it with a tail using resources of your own choice e.g. wool, paper. Talk about how a kite flies and that it needs wind!Maths Activity: Continue with measuring using coloured water and different sized plastic containers. Continue to talk about the amount in the containers e.g. full, half full, nearly full, empty, nearly empty etc. Add lines of tape to where the children must fill the containers exactly. How many cups of water does it take to

containers e.g. short, wide containers, thin bottles etc.

Literacy Activity: Go on a particular letter sound treasure hunt e.g. u. What can you find that starts with the sound ‘u’? Imagine you are putting up an umbrella as you say ‘u’ e.g. umbrella, under etc. There is a colouring sheet attached.

Friday 22nd May: Physical Development including Maths and Literacy

Activity: make a wind streamer. Find a stick and attach ribbons, strips of fabric (you could cut up an old t-shirt/pillowcase) or wool and knotting it to the end of the stick. Add some flowers, leaves or feathers as well. Enjoy watching it move in the wind or as you run around.

Maths Activity: Adult supervision required. Use a selection of mixed coins and ask your child to sort them in their chosen way e.g. size or by colour. Look at them closely. If you have a magnifying glass even better! Talk about what they can see e.g. numbers, pictures of people or animals. Talk about the coin names.

Literacy Activity: Go on a particular letter sound treasure hunt e.g. h. What can you find that starts with the sound ‘h’? Put your hand near you mouth and ‘huff and puff’ as if you are hot after exercise e.g. hand, hop, hot.
