AJ Eklipta was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1959 for Rødovre

Town Hall. He originally designed the light in two sizes: Ø 350 and

Ø 450, and later used a smaller version – Ø 220 – for St. Catherine’s

College in Oxford.

AJ Eklipta is an ultra-minimalist product which, in addition to fea-

turing a unique lighting concept, is designed with great enthusi-

asm for highlighting the unique opportunities offered by the ma-

terials. The clear glass edge that surrounds the fixture evokes a

halo around the opalised surface when the light is both on and off.

It is a beautiful, spectacular touch that clearly demonstrates Arne

Jacobsen’s keen eye for even the smallest detail.

AJ Eklipta

The light concept is a diffuse, 100% glare-free light. This is achieved

by opalising the glass, and together with the thickness of the glass

itself and the distance from the light source, this surface appears

evenly lit. Moreover, on account of the arched shape of the glass,

it provides a graded light surface that emphasises the curvature of

the fixture and boosts lighting comfort.

Irrespective of the light source, the goal has always been to create

the most uniform surface possible without major differences in lu-

minance. The fixture body creates a distance from the wall and al-

lows lighting of the mounting surface, thus forming a halo-like ef-

fect around the fixture itself and contributing to enhancing the

dimensions.

AJ Eklipta emits a soft, diffuse light. Opalised white,

the glass dome generates a pleasant light that ap-

pears to flow across the wall. This is due to the dimen-

sioning of the fixture body. The size of the shade ‘over-

shadows’ the fixture body, and you have to stand very

close to the wall to see it at all. In addition to making

the AJ Eklipta easy to install, this helps generate an ap-

parent weightlessness in the design perception of the

light fixture.

The dimensions of the fixture body also make it possi-

ble to utilise the back light from the mouth-blown

glass shade, imbuing AJ Eklipta with an ephemeral

lightness in spite of its size.

Moreover, AJ Eklipta is a challenge to our lighting tech-

nicians, in the contexts of both incandescent lamps

and compact fluorescent tubes. It has always been im-

perative to reduce hot spots on the surface of the glass

as far as possible.

The sharp light generated by the LED units and the lay-

out on the LED board therefore constituted a signifi-

cant challenge. To overcome this problem, our engi-

neers designed a completely new LED board, and the

result outshines all previous solutions.

They have succeeded in achieving a continuous and

softly, continuous graduated distribution across the

mouth-blown glass disc. The clear edge stands out

more distinctly now than ever before.

All LED boards for the AJ Eklipta models have been

specially designed for the respective sizes.

LIGHT TECHNOLOGY

The AJ Eklipta is designed for fitting over

wall sockets or outlets. The light is simple

to install, and the process only involves

three steps:

1. Fixture body positioned over the wall

socket or outlet. The Ø 350 and Ø 450 mod-

els can also be side-mounted.

2. LED board inserted.

3. AJ Eklipta glass diffuser fitted by tighten-

ing the three adjuster screws on the fixture

body.

The LED board is available in 3000K or

4000K versions for Ø 350 and Ø 450 while

the Ø 220 is available with a 2700K or

3000K. All are continuously dimmable. All

versions have an CRI of >80.

On account of the different sizes, the AJ

Eklipta can be installed in a variety of ways,

from tight patterns to ‘total irregular’. As

such, the fixture can be used to create an

exciting, individual light wall to enhance

both function and atmosphere. The glare-

free light ensures an attractive and pleas-

ant sense of space.
