Kid Friendly Happenings: Parenting Resources as Love, Inc.

Family Smart Kid Friendly Partnership has a variety of informational resources at Love, Inc. to help parents and caregivers learn effective strategies in raising children. Here are a few of our more popular parenting programs.

“I am Your Child” is a video series developed in association with Zero to Three, a national nonprofit organization that promotes the healthy development of babies and toddlers. The videos address critical parenting, early childhood and school readiness issues.

“Nurturing Parenting” is a self-instructional program that allows parents to learn the philosophy and skills of Nurturing Parenting. Some topics addressed in the program include: Brain development, ages and stages, developing empathy, discipline with dignity, family rules, handling stress, and problem solving.

“1-2-3 Magic: Managing Difficult Behavior in Children 2-12” is a video program for parents and caregivers that offers easy-to-follow steps for disciplining children without arguing, yelling or spanking. The award winning program, developed by Dr. Thomas Phelan, includes techniques to help stop difficult behaviors such as whining, arguing, teasing, fighting, yelling, and tantrums. New DVD additions by Dr. Phelan: “All About Attention Deficit Disorder”- Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment. “Surviving Your Adolescents”- How to Manage and Let Go of Your 13-18 Year Olds.

Viewings are by appointment only. For more information on these and other family programs contact Linda Breuer at Love, Inc. (phone) 262-763-6226, (email) [email protected]

It is hard to believe that the Holidays are upon us again. This year I was hoping that I would be able to report to you that the anticipated number of families seeking help for Christmas would be down. Unfortunately that is not the case. The good news is that more people are working, but we have a lot of folks that can be considered “the working poor’’ or “underemployed.” The higher paying jobs are just not there for many of our people. Because of this we must continue our campaign to work with the less fortunate families of our community.

We will be loyal to our mission to help the truly needy of our community. The families we help must qualify to be in our Thanksgiving and Christmas programs. The qualifications are based on the Wisconsin state guidelines for poverty. Please know that we at Love do our best to follow those guidelines.

In 2013 you generous people helped 443 families have a great Christmas morning. You also made it possible for 558 families to sit down together for a Thanksgiving meal. When you adopt a family you can be assured that the family you help really needs the assistance.

Love and its staff would like to thank everyone who has been part of the programs in the past. Please consider participating again this year. Our appeals will continue until we have helped every needy family we can on the track towards independence.

For myself, our board of Directors and everyone connected with Love, Inc. we wish you a safe and healthy holiday season. Thank you for all you do!

Only stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange can be used to make gifts to Love, Inc. For tax purposes, it is better to sell long-term appreciated stock and give the cash to Love, Inc. It is normally better to give stock that has depreciated in value rather than stock that has

St. Alphonsus Catholic ChurchOn the second Monday of each month St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, located in New Munster, provide a very delicious evening meal at Love, Inc.

St. Alphonsus has been doing the evening meal for over ten years. When asked what has kept them coming back each month, Alice Busch, one of the mealsite

coordinators for the Church, responded that she believes she is called to help others and to love one another, especially your neighbors. Pat Vos, an employee from the church, says the Church originally became involved with Love, Inc. because they wanted to do something for the faith community, which spreads far

and wide. Volunteering at Love’s mealsite each month was a way to give back to their faith community.

On behalf of Love, Inc. we want to say a big thank you to St. Alphonsus Parish for donating their time each month to serve those in need at our mealsite. We really appreciate everything they do for us and our community!

Featured Volunteer: Carol ZervicCarol Zervic is Love, Inc’s featured volunteer! She has volunteered with Love, Inc. for more than 10 years. Carol said she always wanted to get involved in the community so when she found out that Love was looking for volunteers she signed right up!

Carol has helped out with a variety of events and programs including the Toy Run, Thanksgiving boxes and Adopt-A-Family. Carol has also volunteered in the kitchen helping cook, but most of her time has been spent volunteering in the Food Pantry.

Originally from Chicago, Carol moved to a farm in Burlington in 1985. She started working at Burlington Memorial Hospital as

a CNA shortly after. Carol lived in Burlington with her husband for 20 years, and has four children total. Her three daughters and one son have blessed Carol with six wonderful grandchildren. Carol says she is so lucky to have the family that she does. When Carol is not volunteering she can be found either gardening or painting. She also enjoys bowling and camping, but her Boston Terrier dogs have to be her biggest hobby, as they keep her very busy.

When asked what volunteering means to her, Carol responded, “Love, Inc. is like my second home. I have a sense of accomplishment and meaning here. It’s hard to explain, but when I’m here

volunteering I find an inner happiness. I love it!”

Love, Inc. would like to say a huge thank you to Carol for volunteering with us for the past 10 years. We would not be able to do it without her!

Special Thanks to Thrivent for Double Your Donation AppealThis summer our donors had every penny of their donations matched by Thrivent. When Scott Herrmann of Thrivent Financial was asked about their involvement, he stated, “ I’m excited and proud of the communities continued support of Love, Inc. and I’m pleased to match the generosity that Love’s donors provide to support our communities neediest members. I feel comfortable selecting Love as the recipient of these funds because over 93 cents of every dollar Love receives goes directly to their clients and programs.”

Love is dependent on community support to provide for the needs of the local area and we are fortunate to have members such as Scott and Thrivent to help pave the way.

Bell Ringers

NeededThe holiday season is fast approaching and we need you to spread the holiday spirit! Love, Inc., in association with the Salvation Army, will be ringing bells at kettle locations throughout the area beginning the week of Thanksgiving and right up until Christmas. Eighty-six percent of all donations stay right here in our community to help people in need to pay rent, utility bills and for immediate shelter. Everyone is invited to get involved by taking some time to ring bells or by offering your business as a kettle location. Consider encouraging others such as family members, coworkers and service organizations to get involved this year by ringing bells at one of the locations. Your help is greatly appreciated. For more information, please call Love, Inc. at 763-6226.

Back to School Program SummarySchool is once again in session, and that marks the end of another Back to School program here at Love, Inc. And, as in years past, it was a wonderful success. As of this writing, 414 local children in need have received school supplies through the program. For the first time, we provided shoes by entrusting the parents with gift cards for Walmart. They were able to take the kids shopping to pick out their own shoes, in their own style, and even spend whatever was left on additional school supplies they might need. The gift cards were conditional however, as they could only be used to purchase shoes and school supplies. The clients’ participation in our Adopt-A-Family Christmas program hinged on the return and review of the receipt, to make sure that every penny went to helping the kids prepare for another year at school.

And so far, the receipts have been rolling in and Christmas is on the way!

Thank you so much, to each and every volunteer who helped to make our Back to School Program possible. And a very special thanks to our wonderful benefactors and sponsors. The school supplies and funds you provided are, at this very minute, helping low-income children in your community participate, and achieve, in their educations and futures. We could not do have done it without you.

Another Toy Run Rides into the SunsetSunday, September 7th

A tidal wave of black leather and shining chrome erupted from the Chocolate Fest grounds and surged into the Tri-County Area. It left behind a wake of exhaust and the distant rumble of American Iron.

But a few hours later, that tidal wave returned, and this time it was towing the largest and best haul of toys in the event’s history- toys that will brighten the faces of local needy children on Christmas Morning.

The numbers aren’t in yet, but by all accounts, the turnout was enormous. And they all ate well and partied late afterwards. But good food and beer can’t do enough to properly thank the big hearts that rode out that sunny day and rode home with so much good will.

To the Tri-County Riders, the vendors, the volunteers, and every single participant, we here at Love Inc.

extend our warmest, deepest gratitude. Thank you all so very much.

For a complete list of sponsors for the event, please check out www.tricountyriders.net.

Many thanks to English Settlement United Methodist ChurchFor many years English Settlement has taken up collections to purchase potatoes and onions for our Thanksgiving meals for the needy program. Last year they purchased 7000 lbs. of potatoes and 21001bs. of onions for the program.

Love, Inc. would like to thank Mary Alice and Richard for heading up this mission with their church.

Love Inc. Program CenterA Local Resource . . . ReimaginedA few years ago, Love, Inc. acquired the building located centrally on the grounds of the community center. Previously a glass business, it offered considerable room for storage and already featured a dedicated storefront and office space. The original concept for the property was to create a common area for the Love, Inc. programs to run out of, a single location that would serve as a place for the clients to come to register and participate in the programs that Love offers, while the rest of the building would serve as flexible storage space for many different purposes.

In a way, the “annex” building, as it has come to be called, has served its function. Our families have become familiar with it being part of the programs. The space is always used for storage, and during the holidays, the storefront has been transformed into “Santa’s

Workshop” for our Adopt-A-Family Christmas program.

However, the full potential of the “annex” building has not yet been realized. We plan on changing that over the next few years. The plan is to convert the “annex” into a consistent, convenient, living and breathing part of the Love, Inc. Community Center. Ideally, it will function as a secondary office where the families we serve will go for virtually every aspect of the programs throughout the year. And eventually, as it becomes established, the “Program Center” will provide the much needed consistency for our programs and those who participate in them.

There are essentially four main sections to the “annex” building, and by further defining and developing these sections, a flowing and sensible pattern can be applied to each and every

program we offer. Our families will go to the same place, with the same expectations and understanding, and the programs will begin to achieve the one thing they have always lacked, something that the families we serve can depend on and respond to: consistency.

While each program is unique, and some specifics may continue to change with each passing year, the Program Center will offer reliable format and structure to each, bringing a sense of stability to the programs. If Love, Inc. is going to help families find in themselves qualities like reliability and consistency, the effort will be most benefitted by seeking to achieve those same qualities in the aspects of our operation.

All of us here at Love, Inc. would like to express our appreciation to Scott Herrmann for his 3 years serving as President of Love, Inc. In January he will complete his term. Scott has been active on the Board of Directors for over 6 years. With his guidance, Love, Inc. has grown services and continued a fugal tradition spending 94 cents on every dollar helping people.

Scott’s energetic style coupled with his commitment to philanthropy in both his personal and business activities have benefited Love, Inc. and the entire community.

Love, Inc. thanks Scott for not only giving his time and skills, but also being one of the top contributors to Love. Thanks for “Walking the Walk.”

Thank You Scott Herrmann
