    FIRST QUARTERNEWSLETTER, 1998

Dear Friends and Loved Ones: Greetings in the name ofour King Jesus. What a privilege tobe a part of His Kingdom. May we grow together as we study and put into practice Hisinstructions.

The encouragement I received from the cards, letters, and gifts I received at year's endexceeded my expectations. So many friends wrote. Since I left in mid-December for avacation in California, I read many messages after I returned. What a blessing they were!

Having my granddaughter, Bettina King, with me added to my pleasure and the excitement ofour vacation.Leta's younger daughter is almost the same age as Bettina and they became constant companions. We did getto see the production oi"Fiddler on the Roof for which Lora mixed the sound. Then Bettina spent a weekendwith Lora while she was doing "The Wizard ofOz." We all spent hours visiting as we cooked, cleaned, shopped, celebrated the holiday, and did sight-seeing. Bettina had her first ride on a roller coaster and the SanFrancisco cable car. Such fun!

Now we are back and down-to-earth. Zola and I, with a young woman from Waialua, andBlossom Sturm - our minister's wife, are involved in planning for the annual women'sconference on March 21. I'll be the registrar, and we are all on the hospitality committee.

The children at Waialua continue to attend the afternoon Bible Club erratically-SundaySchool, too. Two children who used to come regularly were present last week. Their fatherindicated that he is "back" and wants them to come. He said he had been in his "own world"but hadn't left the Lord. Pray for single-parent Joe and his children. A father and hispre-school son has been attending the past few Sundays. The mother brought their infantson and joined us for a potluck meal after the service Sunday morning.(continued on back of this page) [NOTE that news of HCM (Henrietta Luttrell) isavailable ontheinternet at http://www.ipa.net/'-outreach under"missionaries." • The Hyundai Elantra, which the Lord provided forthe mission througha friend, had problems from the start. It usedoil but wasnot leaking. We did not realize howmuchit used. Evidently the previous ownerhaddrivenit whileit was lowonoil, andprobably we did, too. Themotorfinally gaveout. A mechanic friend had a Plymouth Colt station wagon which I wasable to buycheaplywith my savings. It hasmore seating capacit}' and is easy todrive. It meets m>' needs fortransportation. I havehadto buy a new' tire, and it uses oil, loo. Themechanic proposed putting theColt in good condition inexchange forthe Elantra. I'm considering it.

With Zola, I continue to drive about 35 miles to Waialua each Wednesday and Sunday. Lastweek Joy Marshall, whojust moved into our area, went withus. On our way home we stopat Wahiawa for a service there. We are seeking to make contacts with military personnelstationed at Schofield or Wheeler Air Force Base. Ifyou know of persons seeking anoff-base church where communion is served every Sunday, please send us their names, addresses, and phone numbers.

YOU NOTICE the difference in format from my usual quarterly letter. I'm now transmittingthe copy by e-mail (faster and cheaper). May this find you well and excited about yourservice to the Lord in 1998.

    Yours to serve Him, HENRIETTA

Dear Friends and LovedOnes: Greetings from Oahu.Today It actually rained hereIn Nanakull for a half-houror so. We haven't really hada rain for over a year. Everything Is so dry except whereIt Is watered. But we aregrateful that the Lord alwayssends "showers of blessings."

There were 24 childrenenrolled for our June VacationBible School. We used the 5-day course "Hooked on Jesus" (from Standard Publishing) with the video songs, sowe didn't really need a songleader. I was not needed toteach a class, so was free to"direct." Our mission offeringgoal was exceeded and sentto help IDES feed the hungry. The children and adults wereenthusiastic about the school.

We were disappointedthat only two children fromthe Immediate area of thechurch attended. Others wereIn summer school or In a recreation program called"Summer Fun." Now we aregoing to use the whole 10-day course In our weekly Bible Club. This will allow ustime to teach all of the Beatitudes and the events In thelife of Jesus where he (over)

Our annual church tentcamp-out was held the lastweekend in July. In spite ofheavy rain there (notwhere I live) we had agood time. The men andboys fished, dove andswam even In the rain. Thefood was delicious and thefellowship rich. They evenhad some serious competition as they played a fewholes of cow pasture golf.Oh, not In the rain. Thesun came out late on Saturday.

The King children seemto be recovering from thedeath of their sister, Maile.Of course, they still are angry and disobedient sometimes. Aren't all children? How can you judge if it Isbecause of the trauma? The younger ones are stillvisiting a play therapistweekly. I am concernedabout the parents, though, and continue to pray forthem.

MELE KALIKIMAKA and HAUOLI MAKA-HIKJ HOU! That's the standard holiday greeting inHawaiian. I pray that your celebration will renewyour spirits as you enjoy the sights, smells, sounds, and renewed relationships of the season.

My supporters receive frequent letters, but 1want toshare some of the news with you that some have alreadyread. 1have asked that we pray for Joe and his son anddaughter who moved here from Chicago a few yearsago.

They all struggled to fit into this culture, and he tofind work. He manages an apartment building, and hisvolunteer basketball coaching finally resulted in a paidposition. The children have attended our classes sporadically. Joe's mother has prayed for her son and taughtHim about the Lord. He knew he should submit to Himand be immersed. He came forward recently to confessthe Lord, to affirm his faith, and express his desire toobey Him. He was immersed at the nearby beach lastSunday.

Charles had a close friend for years, even before wewere meirried. He operated a mail-order advertising specialities business and moved to Hawaii shortly after wecame. His business is doing well, and he wanted to dosomething to demonstrate his gratitude to Charles andhis family for their goodness, especially in their witnessfor the Lord.

He became a Christian just a few years ago. It is toolate for them personally, so he brought me a BIG check.I put it in the mission account so he could take an income tax deduction. He scvid. "Use it however you want."

I had not been to the mid-west to visit my supportingchurches there or see son Philip eind family since 1995.The Macedonia Christian Church. Kokomo. IN. wherewe served for several years shortly before coming to Hawaii. was having a Homecoming in October. My brotherand a cousin live in the area, and since I grew up there. 1have scores of dear friends there. 1decided to use part ofthat gift to visit them. I flew into Indianapolis and spenttwo weeks there, and had a delightful time. The fall colors were beautiful.

The Saturdayafter my reiurn. Ir.ewomen of ourchurches had our annual mid-winter function. This year it wasa luau at the SunsetBeach Church ofChrist. It was publicized as a "ChristianWomen's Day in theCountry." We had aspeaker from NorthCarolina. The musicwas delightful and thefellowship sweet. Wemet in the auditoriumbut ate under a canopy on the beautifulschool grounds. Nowwe are beginningplanning for ourWomen's Conference

Maile is a fragrant vine. It is used to makelei - given to honor or show love. It is a beautifulvine, and its haunting fragrance lingers long after thelei has "died." So it was with our little Maile. Sheshowered those around her with love. We keep hearing, "She had a hug for everyone!" One friend told usMaile had said she had "lots of Auntys and Uncles"because we had "taught her to call adults aunty oruncle" out of honor. She honored God. and she honored us. her parents. Her fragrance will always lingerin our hearts and home.

Christiita means "Christ-like". So does Christian. Maile loved Je.susand wanted to please Him.She worshipped Hitn with her whole heart. She wasconstantly writing notes to encourage people. Shedrew pictures, too.
