Superintendent's Highlights

The staff in the Lyon County School District is committed to the success of every student, both today and in the future. Ourvision is to graduate all students to be successful in college and career - not just eligible for college and career but successful!

We are committed to providing every student with the tools necessary to build his or her dream. These tools include the 21stcentury skills of communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking combined with a deep knowledge of rigorousacademic standards. The foundation for achieving this vision is our belief and reliance on collaboration to create solutions. Avariety of stakeholders work together to increase student achievement, which include teacher data teams, principal data teams,instructional coach data teams, District data team, and community partnerships.

Some highlights from the year include:•All schools in Lyon County, including elementary, middle and high, are nationally accredited through AdvancEd.•We have partnered with Western Nevada College to enroll 124 students who will receive high school and college creditconcurrently.•We have implemented new curricula to support Nevada Academic Content Standards in literacy, math, and science.•We have partnered with the Healthy Communities Coalition to secure grant funded coordinators to help students and theirfamilies receive medical, dental, vision and mental health services.•We have partnered with the Boys and Girls Club to provide enriching before and after school programs for students.•The LCSD graduating Class of 2015 earned a total of $2,799,770 in scholarship funding, which includes National Merit andPresidential Scholars.•All schools in LCSD have implemented a positive, supportive, and safe learning environment through school-based initiatives, topromote a culture of respect.•All LCSD schools honor the importance of family engagement through a variety of opportunities, including Boosters, PTA,Parent University, Watch Dog Dads, etc.•LCSD students and staff have raised tens of thousands of dollars and donated thousands of hours to support local families,charities, food banks, blood drives, and other community needs.•LCSD students and staff honor veterans, first responders, and other inspiring community members through a variety of schoolevents.

GOAL 1

Graduate all students to be successful in college and career.

Measurable Objective 1:A 20% increase of Fourth grade students will demonstrate a behavior of targeted growth in Reading by 06/01/2016 as measuredby the new state Smarter Balanced Assessment (IEP and ELL students will increase at a rate of 25%).Measurable Objective 2:A 20% increase of Eighth grade students will demonstrate a behavior of targeted growth in Reading by 06/01/2016 as measuredby the new state Smarter Balanced Assessment (IEP and ELL students will increase at a rate of 25%).Measurable Objective 3:A 10% increase of Eleventh and Twelfth grade students will demonstrate a proficiency by being enrolled in a CTE programmeeting "Quality CTE Standards." In Career & Technical by 05/26/2016 as measured by passing scores on the end-of-programtechnical assessment.

GOAL 2

The Lyon County School District will communicate more effectively with stakeholders.

Measurable Objective 1:Collaborate to implement common and consistent grading and homework guidelines to effectively communicate with high schoolstudents and parents by 05/31/2016 as measured by stakeholder perception data.Measurable Objective 2:Collaborate to create a comprehensive communication plan with stakeholders by 05/31/2015 as measured by an increase instakeholder perception of communication on survey data.

Measurable Objective 1:Collaborate to create a comprehensive Strategic Plan which will serve as a guiding document for decisions over multiple yearsby 06/30/2016 as measured by a professional Strategic Plan consultant.

District Communication Efforts

Lyon County School District’s Parental Involvement Policy, IICD, recognizes involvement as key to academic achievement.Parents and community members are active participants in the educational process. As partners in education, frequent two-waycommunication is fostered. The district is currently working with a consultant to develop a more effective communication plan. Inaddition to this work, the district uses the following methods to communicate.

LCSD contracts with ConnectEd, a web-based communication system that allows the school to better relay scheduling ofevents, student absences and other important school information. Schools use ConnectEd to notify parents of emergencysituations, upcoming events, student attendance, and to invite their participation.

The Superintendent and District staff attend community meetings to encourage feedback and fostering positive workingrelationships. All schools have Parent Advisory Committees that meet regularly to address issues impacting students, parentalinvolvement, provide parents with training and ensure that parents are involved in the development of each school’s parentinvolvement policy.

The list of activities to encourage parental involvement in LCSD includes: Parent Summits, Parent Advisory Councils,disseminating information through brochures, holding parent teacher conferences, conducting workshops for parents, sendinghome regular correspondence through newsletters and grade reports, providing families with support services, maintaining openand inviting facilities, and including parents in the decision making process as appropriate.

LCSD recognizes the extreme importance of each parent’s role in the success of our students’ academic achievement and theirongoing learning. It is an expectation of LCSD that every teacher, during the first month of school, makes initial contact with theparents of their students to establish an effective school to home partnership. The LCSD website and Facebook page containtimely parent information and links for parents to reach individual school websites within LCSD.

Parents and community members regularly participate and provide input to critical committees such as:• District Performance Plan Committee• School Performance Plan Committee• Career and Technical Education Committee• Parent Involvement Committee (Title I)• PTSA

Additionally, all parents may have access to their own child's grades, attendance, and school bulletin through LCSD's studentinformation system known as PowerSchool. Parents are also encouraged to email administrators and teachers throughPowerSchool as a method of keeping in touch with the educators in their children’s live.

2015-2016 District Accountability Report


District and school publications provide important information and a means to communicate with District personnel. LCSD, incompliance with Nevada Senate Bill 214 Section 17, provides the Nevada Code of Honor and the Educational InvolvementAccord to parents. The Honor Code and Accord support state Parent Involvement Policies and the federal Elementary andSecondary Education Act. The Educational Involvement Accord and Student Code of Honor reinforce District expectations forstudent achievement and behavior. These documents can be found on the LCSD website. LCSD provides timely andappropriate communication to parents as required by federal law and state statute.

Discipline

To insure that all allegations of bullying are investigated and dealt with, the District has provided Deans at eachelementary school and Assistant Principals at all middle and high schools. All administrators have participated inMcGrath Systems Training to identify both bullying and cyber-bullying, how to investigate allegations, how to documentallegations, and appropriate consequences for students who bully.

Each school has a progressive discipline policy which addresses bullying and cyber-bullying. Consequences areconsistent throughout the district.

All schools participate in “Flip the Script” to help create schools that are bully-free zones. In addition, each school usesother activities such as “Be Kind” to promote tolerance and empathy among students.
