Why is this happening to me This is usually the first thought that comes to our minds when we are faced with a serious problem or a situation that we are not sure how to handle There is of course nothing wrong with asking and wondering Certainly most of us do not deserve to ldquobe punishedrdquo by a Divine Being or the universe So asking why we face challenges is okay as long as we donrsquot make that the essence of our existence and how we face life I am sure that all of us have been in those situations that make us ask why this is happening Itrsquos funny that we ask such a question mostly in response to complicated and challenging events We never say ldquowhy merdquo when something incredible happens to us Our tendency is to complain to feel sorry and to believe that we only deserve good things Well when problems come our way we need to have the right attitude and try to find a solu-tion if one exists As many of you know and of course have noticed I am suffering from serious back problems A little over three months ago I started to experience severe lower back pain It got so intense that I couldnrsquot walk and needed a wheelchair at the airport when we visited our family in Chile this past December After a few MRIs a few visits to the orthopedist a shot in my back lots of physical therapy and pain medication I decided that I have to face the music (pain) and go for the solution back surgery This experience of pain and great physical limitation has made me truly feel what I only knew in theory how fragile our body is and also the need to be optimistic and positive Before going into the rabbinate I worked helping people to achieve physical and emo-tional rehabilitation I knew that attitude was extremely important but I just didnrsquot know how important I am grateful of course knowing that there is a possible solution to my pain and physical limitation Still this is a powerful reminder that we all need to live each moment to be happy as much as we can to be grateful when we have people who love us and care for us in challenging times Every day we have our health we should take a mo-ment to say ldquothank yourdquo to God And if we face a problem health or any other letrsquos try as much as possible to be optimistic positive and full of faith and hope I have really tried not to complain or ask why this is happening to me I am looking forward to having the surgery and to be able to do something that so many of us take for grantedhellipto be able to take one or two steps without having to think about it My stenosis has truly reminded me that we all have our problems and difficulties The trick is how we face them I hope to see everyone after my surgery and once again dance to the music of life Rabbi Uri Goren

Tevye Wants YouAs Tevye struggled to make his family hap-py and make ends meet as a poor milkman he sought guidance from God and struggled with reality Could pogroms actually affect him and his family in their little shtetel The obvious answer was ldquoyesrdquo Could Tevye rely upon the local gov-ernment to protect him The answer was obviously ldquonordquo Temple Avodah seeks to avoid strug-gling by seeking the talents of our congre-gants as members of our Board of Trustees and as members of our committees The Board is the governing body Over the many years that I have served on the Board I have been privileged to serve with people who care a great deal about Temple Avodah and its success Those peo-ple as members of the Board and those who serve on our various committees have made Temple Avodah the successful place of wor-ship fellowship and family that it is A nominating committee will soon be seeking out congregants to serve on the Board You can make an impact on how Temple is run You can be the one who will make sure all of our congregants are gov-erned in a manner which is in their best in-terests Tevye if he were a part of our con-gregation would want you to serve on the Board Several of our Board members have served for many years In order to be able to continue to do the great work we do we look to the future The future is in your hands I would suggest that while everyone has many things that they juggle in their personal lives you can really do something meaningful and great as a Board member We have the benefit of those who have been members for years and we could also use the benefit of our younger congregants to lend their perspective and abilities and thoughts as to how Temple can best serve all of us As I have previously written there is no ldquousrdquo versus ldquothemrdquo We are all ldquousrdquo No one personrsquos opinion means more than anyone elsersquos opinion You can make a difference for Temple by considering a place on the Board of Trustees Please help the Board help all of us by becoming a member Gil Balanoff

Presidentrsquos Message Cantorial NotesThe month of March brings an incredible amount of music to Temple Avodah We kick off the month with our Purim Spiel on March 9th at 630pm This year our stu-dents will once again help us remember the story of Purim through song with our Alad-din-themed Purim Spiel Our kids work so hard to put this play together in such a short amount of time They are a very talented bunch Mid month we have our annual Caba-ret on March 14th which will once again blow you away The talent here is outstand-ing and you will undoubtedly love the mu-sical selections Call the office to purchase your tickets or do it on the website Lastly we have a very special treat here at Temple the Long Island Choir Festival

will take place on March 22nd The festival will feature our own Temple Avodah Adult Choir as well as five other choirs from nearby synagogues This year our choir has made a fabulous choice in music selections as we will be singing pieces that were writ-ten by our very own congregants We have put together a wonderful program of some pieces you are familiar with and others the choir hasnrsquot sung in many years All of the participating choirs will sing together at the conclusion of the festival I look forward to seeing you at one or all of these events Chag sameach Jessica Gubenko

SisterhoodReligious School NewsCarnivals masks costumes hamantaschen hellip these are some of the images Purim evokes Purim is one of the most joyously celebrated holidays of the Jewish year and as the Talmud states ldquoWhen Adar comes in we increase in joyrdquo It is the one time we are encouraged to make noise in the synagogue We stamp our feet boo and twirl our grog-gers when Hamanrsquos name is read from the Megillah Esther However amid all our merrymaking Purim has an important lesson to teach us Esther (the derivative of her name means lsquohiddenrsquo) first kept her Jewish identity a se-cret when she lived in King Ahasuerusrsquo pal-ace She went from being a sheltered young girl in the care of her uncle Mordechai to be a pampered wife of the king so when Mordechai asked her to intervene on be-half of the Jewish community of Shushan she was initially reluctant However after prayer introspection and a three day fast she was able to access her lsquohiddenrsquo strength and summoned the courage to approach the King setting into motion the salvation of the Jewish people Sometimes we also keep our authentic selves hidden from others and even from ourselves Purim re-minds us to identify and share our hidden strengths Here at school we are gearing up for a joyous celebration of Purim We will be making our own groggers to use at the Pu-rim Shpiel on Monday March 9th baking hamantaschen (no prune thank you) and participating in a Purim Pizza Party In keeping with the mitzvah of giving tzeda-kah on the holiday we will be donating to MAZON A Jewish Response to Hunger a national advocacy organization working to end hunger among people of all faiths in the United States and Israel Grades K-6 are also preparing to par-ticipate in the Friday night service on March 20th at 630 followed by dinner I hope you will join us as we celebrate both Shabbat and our children Please see flyer for additional details

NOBODY ASKED ME butCandles A book club of which we are a member recently discussed an historical novel that described some of the effects of the Span-ish Inquisition It included a description of gentiles in various parts of the world who centuries later for unexplained reasons light candles on Friday evening Lighting candles is an enduring pow-erful internalized home ritual It is usually but not necessarily performed by a woman We think the idea of lighting Shab-bat candles in the synagogue instead of at home is a departure from tradition that los-es some of the emotional impact of a home ceremony

A News Report on February 10 2020 SEATTLE ndash Today the government en-tered into a major settlement with plaintiffs in Jewish Family Service v Trump which challenged the administrationrsquos refugee ban issued on October 24 2017 The executive order had imposed new restrictions on refu-gees including suspending admission of refugees from eleven countries and family members of refugees who are already re-settled in the United States (known as ldquofol-low-to-join refugeesrdquo) The ban set back the refugees who were on the brink of resettle-ment to the United States in 2017 miring their cases in mounting delays for the past two years This settlement requires the govern-ment to expedite the refugee resettlement applications of over 300 refugees affected by the ban including all individual plaintiffs and any other refugees who had reached the final stages of processing in October 2017 but still have pending applications A sample statement from one of vari-ous leaders in refugee resettlement Rev John L McCullough President and CEO CWS ldquoToday the sun is shining on refugee families and the communities who for decades have devoted their time and resources to welcome them This ruling means that newly arriving refugees wonrsquot have to choose between being together and accessing critical services as they rebuild their lives It means that people of faith can continue to live out their calling to welcome the stranger It means that we can continue to ensure that all refugees get a bright start in the United States regardless of who is in office in the states and cities where they liverdquo

Only Jews May VoteSounds crazy no But itrsquos true The World Zionist Congress (WZO) which was founded by Theodore Herzl in 1897 has been holding an election every five years in order to choose representatives for the 38th WZO Congressional meeting which will take place this October in Jerusalem Only Jews 18 and over may vote There are 1800 seats for Jews all over the world and 152 seats are reserved for American Jews Voting is online and the last date to vote is March 11 2020 Link to Vote wwwZionistElectionorg The Orthodox Conservative and Reform Jews plus 11 other groups are all competing to get as many delegates as possible in order to have a voice in how millions of dollars from the Jewish Agency and the Jewish National fund will spent in Israel WZO Congress is like the ldquoParliament of Israelrdquo and Jews all over the world get to vote for delegates to the Congress The Or-thodox usually vote in large numbers the more representatives they get the more money and influence they will have Five years ago the Orthodox were way over-represented and the Reform were under-represented compared to their population percent-age- all because the Orthodox turned out to vote in large num-bers and sadly the Reform was the opposite But NOT THIS YEAR As reform Jews we would like to encourage the Reform lib-eral beliefs we have such as equality pluralism and tolerance particularly for women and immigrants We would like to see more Reform Rabbis in Israel an end to gender separation in

public places and increase in Reform Judaism membership This requires choosing reform delegates by voting There is a list of Reform Clergy who are very qualified to rep-resent the reform movement For example Rabbi Angela Buck-dahl of Central Synagogue NYC is number 10 on the reform list to be a delegate If there are enough votes she and numbers 1-9 will will be chosen as will many others who are below Rabbi An-gela depending on how many people vote The more votes the more delegates from our list To vote go online to wwwZionistElectionorg and follow the prompts You will be asked create an account with your email address make up a password and fill in your name and address You will also be asked pay a voting fee (to cover the cost of the election) For adults age 25 and over the fee is $750 and for ages 18-24 the fee is $5 You can pay securely by credit card or PayPal Your email and personal information will not be abused Voting takes only a few minutes just before you vote you will receive an email with a security pin number that you will need to complete the process Be sure to vote for the Reform party Letrsquos hope that when the Con gress meets in October we will be represented at least in proportion to our size For further information go to httpswwwjtaorg20200220united-statesin-world-zionist-elections-american-jews-who-care-about-israel-get-their-say

Why is this happening to me This is usually the first thought that comes to our minds when we are faced with a serious problem or a situation that we are not sure how to handle There is of course nothing wrong with asking and wondering Certainly most of us do not deserve to ldquobe punishedrdquo by a Divine Being or the universe So asking why we face challenges is okay as long as we donrsquot make that the essence of our existence and how we face life I am sure that all of us have been in those situations that make us ask why this is happening Itrsquos funny that we ask such a question mostly in response to complicated and challenging events We never say ldquowhy merdquo when something incredible happens to us Our tendency is to complain to feel sorry and to believe that we only deserve good things Well when problems come our way we need to have the right attitude and try to find a solu-tion if one exists As many of you know and of course have noticed I am suffering from serious back problems A little over three months ago I started to experience severe lower back pain It got so intense that I couldnrsquot walk and needed a wheelchair at the airport when we visited our family in Chile this past December After a few MRIs a few visits to the orthopedist a shot in my back lots of physical therapy and pain medication I decided that I have to face the music (pain) and go for the solution back surgery This experience of pain and great physical limitation has made me truly feel what I only knew in theory how fragile our body is and also the need to be optimistic and positive Before going into the rabbinate I worked helping people to achieve physical and emo-tional rehabilitation I knew that attitude was extremely important but I just didnrsquot know how important I am grateful of course knowing that there is a possible solution to my pain and physical limitation Still this is a powerful reminder that we all need to live each moment to be happy as much as we can to be grateful when we have people who love us and care for us in challenging times Every day we have our health we should take a mo-ment to say ldquothank yourdquo to God And if we face a problem health or any other letrsquos try as much as possible to be optimistic positive and full of faith and hope I have really tried not to complain or ask why this is happening to me I am looking forward to having the surgery and to be able to do something that so many of us take for grantedhellipto be able to take one or two steps without having to think about it My stenosis has truly reminded me that we all have our problems and difficulties The trick is how we face them I hope to see everyone after my surgery and once again dance to the music of life Rabbi Uri Goren
