Salkehatchie Fundraiser Spaghetti Luncheon

Salkehatchie Summer Service is going stronger than ever!
Our Salkehatchie Fundraiser will raise money to buy supplies
needed to get the homes on our sites safe, dry and comfortable.
Please come out and share a delicious spaghetti dinner with us

I remember the slight push of the water on my inner tube as I floated down the North Saluda River.
Sometimes the water would be flowing quickly enough in its quiet hurry to reach destinations
unknown that it would slowly turn the tube around in a lazy circle. Eventually the inner tube would
come to a gentle stop, and the flowing water would find its way around the obstacle I had made of
myself in the middle of the river.
This little excursion of floating down the river would start up by the bridge. After a long
afternoon of rowdy and noisy activities involving my brothers and cousins, we would eventually slow
down with inner tube rides. I can vividly remember looking up at the river birch trees lining the shore and the old
stone steps that climbed up the steep bank to the back porch of my grandparent's cabin.
We seemed never to mind the fact that the river became too shallow right where our neighbor’s section of the river
began. Instead, it seemed only natural that our excursion should stop at that point almost as if the sandy river bottom
was somehow put there to protect us from going too far from home.
One by one we would float until the sand stopped us with its quiet scraping sound on the bottom of the inner
tube. Each time we would come securely and completely to a stop. With the water silently flowing past, it was
always a lazy pleasure to reach into the clear water and scoop up a handful of the brown coarse sand and look at the
pebbles which mixed themselves in with the sand like chocolate chips in the midst of brown sugar.
We never feared the idea of going too far or of getting caught in some sort of unknown area of the river because the
sand was always there year after year. It always brought us to a gentle and reassuring stop before we could float into
harm’s way.
We treasure those things that make us feel secure and those parts of our lives that seem to serve us so well. We
sometimes even begin to think that those parts of our lives can never change or desert us. Much like a riverbed,
we think that those constants in our lives will always be present to keep everything secure as life continues to swirl
around us.
I believe that God’s love is that riverbed so full of peace and security. The riverbed which offers security in any
situation. No matter what storms or even floods we might have to face, God's constancy prevails.
Thank you, Lord, for everlasting peace.
God Bless,
Dan

March starts the craziness of spring. I want to start off by saying that signups are now open for Salkehatchie. We will be going back to Newberry this year. The cost is $250 per person. Please do no wait to signup, the camp will be full before the end of March and we would hate for anyone who wants to go to get left out. Also, if family members or friends also want to come, please make sure that during the sign-up process they register under the church they attend. Also, we need adults to come with us. You do not need to have extensive home repair expertise. All skill sets are welcome. The dates this year for the Newberry Camp are July 18-25. Also, this month we will be having several big outings including a youth outing to watch some family fun wrestling at Calvary Baptist Church in Simpsonville and Winter Jam. This year, Winter Jam falls on a Friday night and Anderson District One does not have school that day. So, we are planning a fun trip downtown in the afternoon, will eat somewhere down there, and then go to Winter Jam. There are lots of other fun things going on in March as well. Also, we will need volunteers to chaperone for Winter Jam and our wrestling outing. If you can, please let me know.

What is Salkehatchie? Salkehatchie Summer Service is a pioneering servant ministry in South Carolina involving
students, college age youth, adult community leaders and persons of different cultures.
We work together in upgrading housing, motivating community cooperative efforts by helping persons to help themselves, and providing all
participants with opportunities for personal growth and service.
Who? Salkehatchie Summer Service participants are primarily from the South Carolina United Methodist Conference. Participants must be at
least 14 years old by the beginning of the camp they attend. Adult leaders are also needed to offer guidance and support.
What? This program of the South Carolina Conference Board of Global Ministries consists of a number of work camps for United Methodist
Youth in South Carolina. During the week participants physically improve homes of needy families and reach out to these families and one
another in friendship.
Where? There are over fifty camps. Camps are established where need, opportunity, personnel and facilities meet.
When? Each camp runs from Saturday to Saturday. Camps are offered from May through July.
Why? Many of our neighbors in South Carolina live in homes needing repair, and Jesus has called us to love our neighbor.
How Much? $250 per person. If you are a church member, Bethesda will cover half of your cost. Each participant must complete the online
registration and pay their registration fee. To receive a reimbursement for half of the fee, submit your request to the Bethesda office.

Volunteer teachers are needed for our Sunday School program on Sunday mornings. This ministry is an ongoing program throughout the year. It is a fun and important part of the Children's Ministry for our children growing in Christ.
Curriculum is provided and is very teacher friendly. Please be in prayerful consideration to help our younger congregation grow in love and in faith.
