MARCHING KNIGHTS’ SECTIONS

It is important to remember that we are all part of ONE marching band. Even though we may have many rehearsals in which we are split into our different sections, we are all working to make the Marching Knights the best we can be. In the end, it is a combination of all the following sections that create the field production in which we take to competitions and football games as one marching unit.

Brass This section includes saxophones, trumpets, mellophones, trombones, baritones, and contras. At competitions you will be judged on the following: how you play as an individual and as a band; how you move and march as a band; and the effect created by all that you do.

Dance Line (aka – Colorguard) Marching Band is a combination of music and movement. This Dance Line section of the Marching Band is providing the production with the dance, movement and color needed to complete the visual aspect. Without the Dance Line the show is incomplete and uninteresting. To say “Marching Band and Dance Line” is being redundant. Whenever the Marching Band is doing anything it includes the Dance Line, just as it includes the brass, woodwinds, and percussion. At competitions you are judged on your performance as a Dance Line, and the effect of your performance as a marching band. **The Dance Line is the only section that has auditions AND cuts. The Director and the Dance Line Instructor will determine the total number of members in the dance line, which will be based on the quality level from auditions and a visual balance considering the number of musicians on the field. The Dance Line Instructor will provide more information regarding the audition.

Page 4: Marching Band Manual - MHS Knights Band

Drum Line (aka – Percussion) This section includes battery percussion (snares, tenors, basses, marching cymbals) and pit percussion (all percussionists that do not march). At competitions you will be judged on the following: how you play as an individual and as a band; how you move and march as a band; and the effect created by all that you do. **There is a required audition to be part of the battery percussion. Those auditioning must make a commitment before they audition. Anyone not selected for the battery percussion will be part of the pit. The percussion instructor will provide more information regarding the audition.

Woodwinds This section includes piccolos, flutes, and clarinets. At competitions you will be judged on the following: how you play as an individual and as a band; how you move and march as a band; and the effect created by all that you do.

BAND CHAIN OF COMMAND

1) The Director of Bands is in charge of administering the total musical and visual marching band program as well as the Middletown High School Band Boosters Inc.

2) The Dance Line Instructor is directly responsible to the Director. This person is in charge of the entire aspect of the Dance Line portion of the program. She is in charge of running and maintaining sectional rehearsals as well as contributing to full band rehearsals.

3) The Percussion and Brass instructors are directly responsible to the Director. They are in charge of running and maintaining sectional rehearsals of their respective sections as well as contributing to organization and leadership of full band rehearsals and performances.

4) Section Leaders and Captains will be appointed through the recommendation of the Director, and Instructors. Section Leaders are responsible for their specific units of the band. Section Leaders will be outstanding marchers, musicians, teachers and leaders. They are to help maintain order during all events and act as peer leaders both on and off the rehearsal field.

5) The Middletown Marching Knights members – YOU – The individual band member is the backbone of the organization – the one who sees that tasks get accomplished. You are the future leaders of this organization!

DISCIPLINE It is a simple fact there have been relatively few discipline problems in this organization. When you become a member of this band, you do so knowing your obligations and our excellent reputation. It is now your responsibility not only to maintain this reputation, but also raise it to a higher notch. The pride of this band is built on self-discipline, genuine respect for other people, hard work and high standards of personal conduct and performance. Please think seriously about the fact that you will be treated like a mature, responsible person and you are expected always to act like one. You will be held accountable for your own actions. As a representative group from Middletown High School, the Band must adhere to all Frederick County Public School’s Policies, Rules and Regulations. We should all be familiar with these as they are distributed to all students at the beginning of each school year. These Policies Rules and Regulations will be in effect at all scheduled band activities. Examples of disciplinary options contained under each level of misbehavior will be interpreted by the director, staff, and administrators whenever necessary. Disrespect of a staff member, parent volunteer or fellow student will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action. Students are to remain in designated areas during ALL scheduled band activities. Any departures or absences, without prior permission from the band director, are grounds for permanent dismissal from the organization. Consequences for misbehavior may include, but are not limited to; running laps; sitting out of rehearsal; cleaning the band room, instruments, trailers and Polaris. *A Three Strike Policy will be enforced for anyone who presents a discipline problem. Parents will be notified after the 2nd Strike. After the 3rd Strike, the student will be dismissed from organization.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Attendance at all of Band Camp is REQUIRED If you cannot attend a portion of camp you may not be allowed to participate.

Attendance is required at the JMU Parade of Champions (10/20)

and the USBands Mid Atlantic Regional (11/03).

The website calendar is the official schedule. www.mhsknightsband.net/calendar 1) In order to be one of the top musical organizations in this area, it is imperative that our precious

rehearsal time is maximized. Your commitment to the success of the ensemble will be directly reflected by your attendance and preparation for each and every scheduled band activity. This includes rehearsals and performances. These are the times in which students learn and by their very nature cannot be reproduced or made-up. Every effort will be made to give at least two weeks notification of any changes. The attendance policy will go into effect upon the first day of camp and will remain in effect until the marching season is over (after the last performance or once the football team is no longer playing, whichever goes longer). You will succeed or fail as a group, not as individuals. Therefore, it is mandatory that you are present, prepared, and prompt for all scheduled band activities. No unexcused absences will be tolerated.

Page 7: Marching Band Manual - MHS Knights Band

2) Everyone is required to attend all rehearsals and performances. Attendance is still required if you are hurt, feel slightly ill, or are pulled from rehearsal or a performance. There are occasions when absences cannot be avoided. *Please note that only excuses for emergency situations will be accepted after an event. To facilitate being excused for a rehearsal (for any portion of time) you must submit an Absence Request.

3) An absence will be considered excused if:

a) You have a medical emergency, accompanied by a physician’s note b) There is a death in your family c) You have a personal illness d) You have a significant family responsibility e) A last minute unavoidable academic related conflict at Middletown High School

(MHS ACTIVITY CONFLICT FORM required – available online)

4) If an emergency occurs the night or day of an event, call Mr. Shearer’s cell phone (240-357-8822)

5) Absence Requests (www.mhsknightsband.net/members - through the account info page) must be completed at least 2 weeks prior to any “planned” absence. This form will include the date of the absence and the reason. In the event of an emergency absence, the form should be completed before the next band activity. Any student that does not complete an Absence Request will be unable to participate in any event until it is completed. Parent notes will not be accepted in place of the absence request. The computers in the band room are available to submit these requests. **NOTE: Submission of an absence request does not mean that it is approved. Requests are not “approved” or “not approved” until they are reviewed by the Director.

6) The following procedures will be followed for absences from rehearsals:

a) A member may not be permitted to participate in the next performance following an unexcused absence. b) A member may not be permitted to participate in the next performance if he/she is not fully prepared

due to any number of absences (excuse or unexcused). c) Should a member be absent (excused or unexcused) from either or both of the last two rehearsals prior to

a performance, he/she may not be permitted to participate in the upcoming performance. d) Although you might have planned a performance miss, you are still required to attend rehearsals for your

benefit and the benefit of the organization. e) A member who has missed 20% or more of rehearsals (excused or unexcused) is subject to disciplinary

action including dismissal from the organization. f) A member with 3 unexcused rehearsal absences is subject to disciplinary action including dismissal from

the organization.

7) The following procedure will be followed for absences from performances:

a) Parents will be contacted after an unexcused absence from a performance. b) A member with two unexcused absences from a performance is subject to disciplinary action including

dismissal from the organization. c) Even though circumstances may not permit a student to march at a performance, he/she is expected to

attend, in uniform with the marching band. Should the student choose not to attend, he/she will be charged with an unexcused performance absence.

d) If a student does not ride the bus to and/or from an event, an absence request must be submitted online at least 2 weeks before the date of the event AND the parent must obtain approval in writing from a school administrator. *Alternative Transportation Form

Page 8: Marching Band Manual - MHS Knights Band

8) Students that are absent from school or miss more than 60 minutes of the school day before a scheduled band activity will not be permitted to participate in any activities that day and all attendance policies apply. Administrative approval is needed in order to participate. (This is FCPS policy)

9) Late arrivals and early dismissals will be counted as absences if the band member is not present for enough of the activity to meet the goals of the group. Failure to be in complete uniform, lack of required equipment/attire or ejection from an activity due to discipline will be counted as an unexcused absence.

10) In the event that a student belongs to a non-Middletown High School organization, which may be appearing, rehearsing, or meeting during the same time, the Marching Knights will take precedence. Permission to miss rehearsal may be granted for special circumstances.

11) The Middletown High School Marching Knights will adhere to the following philosophy: A Middletown High School game or other Middletown High School event will take precedence over a marching band rehearsal; a marching band performance will take precedence over any other Middletown High School practice or meeting. **In the event that a Middletown game or event is scheduled opposite a marching band performance, the student must inform the Director at least two weeks in advance of the conflict, so that a solution may be reached. The Band Director’s decision will be final and subject to the above attendance policies.

12) Employment is not an excuse for missing a rehearsal or a performance. Any student who misses a rehearsal or performance due to work will be charged with an unexcused absence and subject to all attendance policies.

13) Consistent tardiness to rehearsals and performances impedes the flow of the band’s progress and negatively affects the morale of the organization. Beginning with the third unexcused tardy, you will be charged with an unexcused absence and each subsequent unexcused tardy will count as an unexcused absence.

14) The marching band will continue to rehearse and perform as long as the Football Team remains in the playoffs and until all scheduled trips, performances, etc… are completed. Playoff schedules are not posted until the week of the games. We will be expected to participate in all home and away playoff games. These games are required and are subject to the attendance policies. Playoff games are usually on Friday evenings, but may also occur on Saturday afternoons. Be prepared; plan ahead!

15) Only two absences, excused or unexcused, will be permitted from performances (games, parades, competitions, shows). After two performance absences, all requests for performances will be denied and any absences from performances will be unexcused.

16) The attendance policies above apply to all marching band rehearsals and performances, football games, parades, and special events.

17) Each student is expected to come to a rehearsal and a performance prepared and ready to participate to the fullest of their ability. Any student that comes to a rehearsal or performance and does not actively participate will be subject to all attendance policies and disciplinary action. This includes, but is not limited to: forgetting and instrument, not having a reed, mouthpiece, sticks, mallets, equipment, not having music, correct shoes, etc. (students that have medical excuses or verified instrument repair issues will be exempt from penalty).

UNIFORMS

Care and maintenance of our band uniforms is the responsibility of each band member. They were designed to be simple and plain. They are very easily soiled. Therefore, each band member must be mindful of the following instructions. These uniforms MUST last and WILL last if they are worn and cared for with pride and responsibility. Students will be financially responsible for the damage or loss of uniform items(s). - Be sure your uniform and shako are placed where they will not get dirty, wrinkle or damaged when not being

worn. - When in formation and not wearing your jacket and/or shako, place those items in a neat and similar manner. - Always carry your shako right side up. - Always hang your uniform as neatly as possible. - Uniforms will be dry cleaned periodically by a professional service. Do not attempt to clean the uniform yourself. - To avoid soiling, NO EATING will be allowed while in uniform except when allowed by the director. - When in uniform, avoid dirty, greasy, and muddy areas. Never let a uniform touch the floor. - NEVER cut the material in attempt to alter the uniform. You will receive a detailed uniform agreement before you are fitted for your uniform. Musicians will be required to purchase a pair of black and a pair of white Pinnacle marching shoes.

The Dance Line Instructor will decide what footwear members of the dance line will purchase.

Page 11: Marching Band Manual - MHS Knights Band

RULES OF CONDUCT It is a proven fact that both positive and negative attitudes are contagious. You are expected to exhibit a positive and cooperative attitude at all times. Any student exhibiting a consistent negative, demeaning, or undermining attitude towards staff, parents, students, or the Middletown High School Band program will be subject to permanent removal from the Marching Knights. Such violations may result in a conference involving the Director of Bands, the Parents/Guardian of the student, the student and appropriate school administrators.

Rehearsal Etiquette A well-defined and executed rehearsal technique has a direct impact on the success of the group. It is expected that all members adhere to the following rehearsal etiquette: 1) Be in the right place in the right time with the right equipment. You should have the following items with you

at all rehearsals:

a) Pencil; you will need to write several things down on your music and drill at every rehearsal. It is very difficult to remember everything from rehearsal to rehearsal.

b) Music and Drill Sheets c) Water jugs; every member should have a jug of water especially during the summer months. There will

also be water provided throughout band camp; however, it is strongly advised that each member bring his/her own water bottle or jug.

d) It is also advisable each member brass and woodwind member has a towel to set their instrument on at outdoor rehearsals. Remember, you are responsible for all damage done to a school owned instrument; this includes scratches due to the pavement and cement.

2) All band members should dress comfortably and appropriately for all rehearsals. It is important for you to realize that we will be outside and moving at nearly every rehearsal. It is also up to you to watch the weather forecast and to dress accordingly. Appropriate clothing for rehearsals include: t-shirts, shorts, sweats, and tennis shoes (no sandals or dress shoes).

3) Talking during a rehearsal must be kept to a minimum. There are a large number of band members, and a limited number of staff members. We cannot talk over you. Remember, “When the talking starts, learning stops.” Do not waste rehearsal time by talking. If you have a comment or question during a rehearsal, wait until the appropriate time. You will have the opportunity to give your input on a regular basis. We will also give you plenty of breaks for you to re-hydrate and socialize.

4) Mobile phone use during rehearsal is strictly prohibited. If a student needs to be reached in an emergency, call Mr. Shearer’s cell phone 240-357-8822

5) Always rehearse in the same manner you would perform. Never expect it all to come together the night or day of the performance. All members need to look at section leaders for instrument carriage, horn angles, etc.

6) Rehearsal etiquette is the same no matter who is conducting.

7) It is expected that all members come to rehearsal prepared to enjoy the music and movement of the Middletown High School Marching Knights. Practice and memorize at home, before rehearsal.

Page 12: Marching Band Manual - MHS Knights Band

Performance and Competition Etiquette

1) Always be early! Rehearsal times will always be announced with plenty of notice. Times for competitions are often not known until the week prior to the competition

2) For football games – March to and from the stadium with pride! The uniform is to be worn PROPERLY at all times. Your performance begins when you are in uniform and does not end until you are out of uniform. There is to be no talking when marching to and from the stadium.

3) You may not eat or drink in your uniform, except for water. Accidents may occur unexpectedly that would soil, stain, or permanently damage your uniform. You will be instructed at performances as to when it is appropriate to remove your band jacket and get something to eat and drink

4) Running in uniform is strictly prohibited; it is out of character, and shows a lack of respect for the uniform and the organization.

5) Do not lean or sit on anything that will soil, tear, or snag your uniform.

6) While at football games it is imperative that you are with your section. This not only gives the band a uniform look, but also is also crucial in maintaining a well-balanced and consistent sound. All members are expected to play or dance at a moment’s notice during the game.

7) There are to be no visitors at all football games. Only Middletown High Marching Band members, chaperones, Staff and Administration are allowed to be with the band. Alumni may be permitted with approval of the staff. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

8) YOU ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR THE CURRENT BAND SHIRT and/or the BAND JACKET and sit together when watching other bands perform at competitions.

9) Visitors are welcome AFTER our performance. Public Displays of Affection will not be tolerated. Blanket sharing is prohibited at all times; bring your own.

10) Respect the bands that are performing at all times and applaud in a mature genuine manner. Do not use electronic devices while other bands are performing. It is customary to stand for the host band’s performance.

11) Drum majors, Field Commander captains, Seniors and designated section leaders will have a rotation to accept awards at competitions.

12) The only place you are permitted to “hang out” while watching competitions is in the stands with the band. You may be dismissed to get concessions, etc., but you should make your purchases and return to the stands.

13) Never polish your instrument or shoes while in uniform.

14) The general rule is that if you have any question as to if you should or should not be doing something in uniform, DO NOT DO IT!! When you are wearing the uniform, you are not looked upon by others as an individual, but rather as a part of the Middletown High School Marching Knights. Most of the spectators and band members from other schools who see you behind the scenes will form their opinion of the ENTIRE BAND from their opinion of how you look in uniform. This also carries over when you are wearing any MIDDLETOWN HIGH SCHOOL attire, or anytime you are outwardly representing the Middletown High School Marching Knights.

Page 13: Marching Band Manual - MHS Knights Band

Travel Etiquette 1) Always respect chaperones, pit crew, staff and bus drivers! If they tell you to do something it is as if Mr.

Shearer told you. Always treats adults with respect.

2) Everyone must help to load, unload, and clean up. Never walk past a piece of equipment empty handed!

3) Blankets may not be shared at any time; bring your own.

4) Excessive displays of affection WILL NOT be tolerated; you will be separated, and not allowed to sit together for the entire next trip. It is the chaperones’ responsibility to report excessive displays of affection to Mr. Shearer.

5) Stay with the group at all times. You must get permission from a chaperone to depart from the group for any reason. Never go anywhere alone!

6) Do not get off the bus until it is clean and approved by a chaperone!

Chaperones, Pit Crew, Uniform Crew 1) In order to be a chaperone or be on pit crew or uniform crew, you must attend the mandatory chaperone

meeting/training conducted by a Middletown High School administrator or Mr. Shearer.

2) There will be a Head Chaperone assigned to each chaperoned event. This person is responsible for assigning duties to all chaperones. All chaperones will report to the Head Chaperone who will then report to Mr. Shearer. In some circumstances it may be appropriate for the chaperone to report directly to Mr. Shearer.

3) There will be a specific number of chaperones assigned to each chaperoned event.

4) Only official chaperones, pit crew, and uniform crew of that event will be eligible to receive complimentary tickets if they are available.

5) There will be a Pit Crew Chief assigned to each event. This person is responsible for managing and supervising the loading, transportation, and unloading of all band equipment; assigning a driver for the Gator; assigning specific duties to Pit Crew members; keeping track of all sets of keys and returning them to Mr. Shearer

6) Pit Crew and Uniform Crew members may have chaperone duties other than their Pit Crew or Uniform Crew assignments. Pit Crew members will report to the Pit Crew Chief who will then report to Mr. Shearer. Pit Crew members with other chaperone duties will report to the Head Chaperone who will then report to Mr. Shearer. Uniform Crew members should report to the Head Chaperone.

Page 14: Marching Band Manual - MHS Knights Band

INSTRUMENT CARE

1) The Middletown High School Band Program will provide the following instruments, free of charge, to its members: mellophones, marching baritones, tubas, tenor and bari saxophones, piccolos, all marching percussion and pit equipment, as well as, all props for the field show. These instruments must be checked out at the beginning of band camp and you will be held responsible for their playing condition during the season. It is your responsibility to inform Mr. Shearer of any damages or needed repairs immediately. If an instrument is maliciously or carelessly lost or damaged, you will be charged for either the repair of the instrument or the purchase of a replacement if necessary.

2) Check-in of all Middletown High School owned instruments will occur after the final performance of the marching season. Instruments must be in good working order (as issued).

3) Proper care of all instruments (personal and school owned) during the marching season is essential. It is impossible to present a musical performance on an instrument with stuck slides, bad pads, split reeds, or chipped mouthpieces. Also, be aware that many students bring their own instruments to play in the band. Always treat instruments with the same respect as if the instrument were your own. We highly recommend that brass instruments and mouthpieces be flushed periodically in order to remove accumulated dirt and grime. There is no excuse for not keeping your instrument in good playing condition.

MUSIC AND DRILL

1) Every Middletown High School Marching Knight member will be issued music and drill book (available on the

band website). It is your responsibility as young adults to organize these materials as each member sees fit. In the event that edits need to be made, you are required to have access to these materials at every rehearsal, even after the music and drill are memorized.

2) If you lose music or drill, download and print it from the website as soon as possible.

LEADERSHIP GUIDELINES AND EXPECTATIONS

INTRODUCTION

This section of the Middletown High School Marching Knights handbook is intended to help the leadership of the Marching Knights in the teaching of marching fundamentals, rehearsal procedure, and overall role in producing an outstanding product. It is our hope that by more clearly defining just what it is that you are expected to do as a leader in this organization you will be more confident and effective in your roles. Drum Majors, Section Leaders, Captains, and Staff should read this area of the handbook carefully. Other members of the Band will benefit from familiarizing themselves, as well, with the concepts and expectations in this section. If is imperative that the leaders in our organization become familiar as possible with the information in this handbook and aid in the process of teaching it. A unified effort from all will be required in order for everything to be taught effectively and efficiently.

QUALITY MARCHING BAND

Marching band is a unique form of art, blending sight and sound to present a total product. Of extreme importance, obviously, is how well a band can perform its music while moving. A band that marches with poor technique will also play poorly. The development of marching band from a musical as well as physical aspect is the challenge that we face. It is important that the proper rehearsal procedures are implemented and that the Staff, Drum Majors, Section Leaders and Captains all have a unified approach to teaching. This is the area that I believe our leadership can make a tremendous impact on the success of the preparation.

PRODUCTION VS. DISCIPLINE

The following are guidelines for our leadership related to their roles in motivating members of the Middletown High School Marching Knights to remain focused on during our preparation: 1) Never interrupt rehearsal in order to yell at a member of your section. If you have a problem with one or more

members of your section not working according to the MHS Marching Knight band standards, then speak to them after rehearsal or in a small group setting. Yelling during rehearsal does nothing to build respect and actually detracts from the rehearsal. You must always keep in mind that the needs of the many far outweigh the needs of the few. Sometimes you may find it effective to ignore troublemakers. Often, they will weed themselves out and make adjustments when they see the rest of the band focused.

2) If you should have to speak to a member or members of your section regarding disciplinary issues, try to make it positive and respectful. Let them know you care and want to help them. Offer your time if they are struggling.

3) #2 prove ineffective, your next option is to have a drum major speak to the student(s).

4) Should all of the above prove ineffective, have the Staff member of your choice speak with the student(s).

5) Any member of leadership that has a concern with rehearsal process, drill ideas, etc. should not discuss it during rehearsal with anyone. We absolutely welcome your suggestions and want to hear them, but wait until after rehearsal. Always keep in mind, however, that there must be a unified approach to the running of our organization.

DIRECTOR’S PREROGATIVES

The Director of Bands has certain prerogatives. These are: 1) Selection, placement and performance of the personnel.

2) The Band Staff is at liberty to remove the privilege of performance at any time if:

a) a student is not diligent in the preparation of music, drill, choreography etc. b) a student has missed changes to the show from a recent rehearsal. (see attendance policy) c) the performance of the student poses a safety hazard to themselves or the band. d) a student does not maintain current grades of at least a C average. e) a student has any outstanding fees.

3) Rehearsal time, dates, and procedures with consideration for school regulations and policies. It is the

responsibility of the Director to notify the organization of any and all special rehearsals and/or performances at least two weeks in advance, if possible. Students will be expected to notify their parents/guardian of the Director’s announcement.

4) Any student who quits or is dismissed from Marching Band will not be eligible to participate in any other extracurricular band activity for the remainder of the school year and will lose all status for that year. The student must wait until the following school year to be eligible.

5) Any student who has outstanding band fees or payments will not be permitted to participate in any future marching band activities until the fees are cleared.

6) If a situation develops resulting in a parent wishing to have a conference with the Director, it will be held at a time that is mutually agreeable to both parties. All situations necessitating a discussion can be resolved much more amicably with such a conference. Discussing them in the community or bypassing the Director in an attempt to solve them is neither ethical nor effective.

7) Establishing and enforcing all guidelines and rules related to the Marching Band

System + Spirit = Success

The most common problem especially for young band members working with their peers, is gaining the respect and rapport needed to establish a healthy working relationship with each other. Respect cannot be demanded or forced; it must be earned. An outstanding band member must possess skill and knowledge related to his/her contribution as a performer. In addition, an effective band member must be able to apply and communicate this information to others in a productive fashion. All band members should view themselves as EQUALS regardless of their age or position in the band. People who are admired by others have many traits considered to be desirable. There is no question that we all value people who are responsible, friendly, patient, positive, organized, perceptive, sincere, talented, enthusiastic, mature, stable, consistent, and competent. Yet, it is difficult to respect anyone who is temperamental, officious, obnoxious, impatient, irresponsible, disorganized, sarcastic, snobbish, arrogant, or dishonest. We must become the kind of person that others admire, and in most cases, this means self-improvement will be necessary. Self-improvement can be achieved be objectively analyzing one’s strong and weak points. Then, one must work hard to strengthen their weaknesses. People can change the way they are by improving personal qualities and traits, thus improving their image and how others perceive them. As problems arise we are faced with the challenge of finding appropriate solutions. Before selecting the most effective solution, examine every possible cause of the problem to determine the most relevant conclusion. Conflicts usually arise as a result of quick and careless decisions. Good band members are sensitive to people’s feelings and are cautious about passing judgment regarding problems. Work hard to solve the causes of problems, rather than concentrating on the problem itself. We cannot motivate people; they motivate themselves as the result of positive and negative experience. Good discipline and motivation are the ‘by products” of success. Therefore, as a band our goal should be to discover ways to experience success by working hard with positive attitudes. The two most important attributes of a successful marching band are SPIRIT and SYSTEM. SUCCESS is the by-product of spirit and system. A system represents everything provided to the band by the administration, including philosophy, methods, marching and playing style, policies, activities, etc… Spirit represents how the band members react to the system with practice, attitude, commitment, responsibility, dependability, and hard work. When both of these virtues are outstanding, success will surely follow. Success, then, has its own byproducts including pride, good discipline, enthusiasm, and dedication.

Traits of a Student Leader Exemplar

1) Have a thorough knowledge of and the ability to communicate all Marching Knights’ philosophies, rules, policies, procedures, and schedule.

2) Set the example of the ideal student, musician, and performer at all times. This includes time spent with the band and away from the band; on the field, in the classroom, in public and at home.

3) Share the vision of the band staff and prepare for rehearsals to help the band reach that vision.

4) Arrive early to help set up and stay late to make sure everything is put away properly and neatly. Help everyone be early so we are fully prepared and can begin all activities on time.

5) Help maintain discipline by displaying and encouraging appropriate behavioral choices on and off the field. Communicate issues concerning the band membership’s behavior on and off the field to the band staff.

6) Promote band spirit and morale at all times. Treat all members equally and encourage all members at all times.

7) Know that rehearsal time is precious and make sure that no time is ever wasted.

PARTICIPATION FEE and FUNDRAISING

The participation fee for the 2018 Marching Knights’ season will be $450. This fee includes a show themed t-shirt and a jacket. Students who have already received a jacket will have a reduced fee. Students are required to wear these items when traveling. The participation fee and fundraising requirements are established by the MHS Band Boosters Inc. Without the fee and fundraising the entire band program would not be able to exist. The fees and fundraising cover 100% of the costs of the Marching Knights. These costs include school busses, membership fees, insurance, staff, leadership camps, music arrangements, drill design, instruments and the list goes on and on. This fee DOES NOT INCLUDE: Performance footwear, gloves, charter bus fees (trips typically over 1.5 hours away, e.g. James Madison University) So that everyone can understand what goes into running an organization of this caliber the booster organization will provide an outline of the upcoming year’s budget at the August booster meeting. In order to attend band camp, and thus be a part of the Marching Knights, you must have all necessary fees paid (or arrangements made) by the first day of band camp. Any student who has outstanding band fees or payments will not be permitted to participate in any future marching band activities until those fees are cleared. Once band camp begins, the participation fee will not be refundable.
