Principal’s Report
What a night…. Last night year 6 enjoyed a wonderful farewell
dinner. On behalf of all our Year 6 students,
I’d like to thank their teachers past and
present, the office staff, our wonderful SLSO’s
and all the other people who contribute to
our school for the years of dedication and care that have helped prepare these great young
people for high school. I’d like to sincerely thank the parents on the organising committee who
spent months preparing for the dinner, to make it such a special event.
Year 6 parents, I’m very aware that this is a farewell for many of you too, in many cases after a
long association with the school. I’d like to thank you most sincerely for your support of the
school and I hope that you too will take away many fond memories of your time here. To our
Year 6 students, I want to thank you for being great leaders in our school this year and
congratulate you on your many achievements academically, in the arts or on the sporting field
but mostly for becoming the wonderful young people that you are today. Thanks to your terrific
teachers and supportive parents, I have no doubt that you are well prepared for the next stage
in your lives. I wish you all every success.
School Development Days Parents will be aware that schools have school development days on the first day of Terms 1, 2 and 3. These days are non-teaching days and focus on teacher professional learning and school planning. At the beginning of 2017 staff will return on 27 January to participate in professional learning related to visible learning. We will also be engaged in whole school strategic planning and look forward to sharing this with you early next year.
Another school year ends… This will be the last newsletter published for 2016. It has been a brilliant year for our students
and school in so many ways. During this time of year teachers are finalising class programs and
collecting data that will support class creation for 2017. As you would appreciate, the process of
forming classes is a highly complex process that we take very seriously and handle carefully. As
you would imagine, there are a number of variables that teachers have considered requiring
careful thought and discussion. We thank you for supporting your child’s learning in whatever
way you have been able to. 2017 will be an exciting year for Maroubra Junction PS as we
embrace our goals in teaching and learning and build upon the strong values of care, respect
and lifelong learning. I have been delighted to lead the school since joining in April this year and
am very appreciative of the immense amount of support I have received from students, staff
and parents. It is with a sense of optimism and pride that I ask you to celebrate our successes
and look forward to a great future. I wish all of our families a safe and happy holiday break.

Farewell Maroubra Junction Public School is lucky to have a team of motivated and inspirational teaching
staff. At the end of this term it is with great sadness that we will be saying goodbye to some staff
members who have worked hard during their time at MJPS and contributed a great deal to our
school. This page is dedicated to saying a fond farewell to these teachers and wishing them
well on their new adventures.
Sue Ellenden – Sue has been a dedicated teacher at MJPS since 1992. She has
shared her strong passion for teaching with so many colleagues over the years and has been an asset to
the school in her ability to mentor and support teachers, students and families in her co-teaching role as
an English as a Second Language/Dialect teacher (EAL/D). We will miss Sue’s expertise in teaching English,
her warm personality and fun sense of humour. We hope you enjoy every minute of your retirement Sue.
Sandra Mather – Sandra has been an asset to the MJPS community for nearly 25
years. Her passion for teaching, guidance and encouragement have helped so many teachers,
students and families and we've been so fortunate to have her expertise to rely on. We will miss
Sandra’s literacy knowledge, in depth understanding of learners and of course her ‘heart of gold’. Now
we wish you a relaxing time in your retirement Sandra with new and interesting ventures ahead.
Sue Mirow – Sue has been an educator for over 40 years. She has
been an inspirational librarian who has a knowledge for books that has enriched teaching
and learning across our school. Over the years, Sue has contributed to our school beyond
the library in supporting students and families in dance, band and sport programs. We will
miss Sue’s passion for books, caring and supportive personality and fun sense of humour.
We wish you all the happiness in your retirement Sue and even though you are retiring, the
knowledge and love for books that you have imparted to your students will never retire.
Lois Worsley – Lois has been educating students at MJPS since 1993. Over the years she
has been a strong support for students, teachers and families particularly in her role as an
EAL/D teacher. Thank you for being a tireless professional, a helpful co-worker, and a good friend. We'll miss Lois’ expertise
in catering for students who are learning to speak English and lovely gentle personality. We sincerely hope
that your retirement is wonderful and we wish you lots of joyous time with your family.
Paige Kelly – Paige has made an impact at our school through her contributions to teaching and her
dedication to leading our school choir. We will miss Paige’s bubbly personality, passion for teaching and enthusiasm to learn new things. We wish you all the best at your new school.
Michael Fitzsimmons – Michael has made an impact at our school over the years
through his passion for innovative teaching pedagogies, leadership in the arts and dedication and commitment to supporting students, families and teachers. We will miss Michael’s lovely calm presence, passion for education and creative ideas. We wish you all the best in your promotion as Assistant Principal at Newtown PS.
A huge thank you goes out to all of our teachers for their hard work and dedication to providing quality
education this year! Congratulations to all our fabulous students for all of their hard work and thank you to our parents for
your ongoing support. I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday and I look forward to seeing you all next year.

Mini Fete
The Year 6 Mini Fete was a great success last Thursday. This was because of the hard work from
our students and the Year 6 teachers, the support from our Year 6 parents who very kindly
donated some if not all the cost for the products for the stalls and lastly because of school
community who purchased the items on offer. The Year 6 teachers would like to say a VERY BIG
thank you to all. We raised just under $6 611 for a present that Year 6 2016 will give back to
the school. The Year 6 students have been thinking of ideas for this present and our school
captains Lily and Quinn will present a list to Mrs Te Rata in the coming days. The present will be
announced at the Farewell Assembly on Friday 16th December from 2.15pm as we say our final
goodbyes to our wonderful Year 6 cohort.
Our Successful Stores (before deductions)
Mini Fete on behalf of Year 6
Each year, the year sixes hold the Year 6 Mini Fete. This event raises money for the year sixes to donate a gift to the school. We created groups to organise small stalls, selling a variety
of items such as accessories, cupcakes and fruit juices. They were also many games stalls, for example you could pay to throw whipped cream at teachers, eat a doughnut as fast as you can
and race your friends in a sack race. The mini fete is a highlight of the year not only for the year sixes, but for staff and other
students as well. Everybody had a fun day, spending their money on all the items and games we had organised. The year sixes especially enjoyed creating skits to advertise their stalls.
These skits were showcased to the whole school, and everybody had a little laugh. Throughout the whole process of the mini fete we learnt many skills, such as organisation,
communication and resilience. On the day everybody was able to keep calm and in order. Overall we had a successful day, raising over $6611 and breaking the school record! With this money, a gift will be bought for the school. We are currently deciding what that gift will be.
Previous gifts have been air conditioning for the year 6 rooms, speakers for the hall, zone jerseys and last years gift, banners for the sports houses.
All the year sixes are happy how it went, but are still very sad that it was their last Mini Fete.

Year 6 Genius Hour Projects
This term, Year 6 were put to the task of creating a Genius Hour
presentation as their last project for the year. Genius Hour is a project
where children research about their passion, usually something they
don’t have the opportunity to learn about during class time. This year,
he Year 6 teachers put a spin on it, and said the project could be
beneficial to other people. This got everybody’s mind racing, thinking
about what they could do to make a difference. The results were
amazing.
For example, Celeste and Bianca decided to not help humans, but the
dogs stuck in shelters by making them dog biscuits. Or Ella and
Anastasia who made a winter jacket for dogs at the RSPCA.
As well as that, Sophia.D and Giselle created an Instagram page called
@helpforourselves, which is aimed at young girls who need help loving
and respecting who they are. Another example are Sofia.C and
Phoebe.O, who created the product of Dream Tea. They went around
their neighbourhood selling packets of tea with positive quotes, then
donated the money to Salvation Army. For my presentation, along with
Aria, we decided to write letters to refugees. We were very lucky and
the national kids newspaper, Crinkling News did a story on us.These are
only a few of the amazing ideas dreamed up by our Year 6 students that
help people less fortunate than themselves.
Many important skills were learnt during the time given to create and
present these amazing projects. Many people said that they learnt
variety of things, such as learning to feel empathy, researching skills
and patience. Some even learnt resilience and perseverance, as they had
to work hard throughout the whole time and make changes along the
way. A great example of this is Audrey and Olivia’s presentation, where
they made scarves and dolls that were donated to the Deli Women’s
Institute. They had to dedicate a lot of time to finding where to send
these dolls. They also had to make many changes to the dolls’ shape and
size, but finally got to the perfect result.
Overall, these wonderful projects have revealed many people’s passions
and that kids can make a difference.
