THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

The First Reading: Isaiah 56:1, 6-7 Read by Jennifer Lee, The Archbishop’s Appeal Team

A Reading from the Book of Isaiah

Thus says the Lord: Have a care for justice, act with integrity, for soon my salvation will come and my integrity be manifest.

Foreigners who have attached themselves to the Lord to serve him and to love his name and to be his servants – all who observe the sabbath, not profaning it, and cling to the covenant – these I will bring to my holy mountain. I will make them joyful in my house of prayer. Their holocausts and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar, for my house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

8

Responsorial Psalm: 67:1-2, 4, 6-7 R. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.

O God, be gracious and bless usand let your face shed its light upon us.So will your ways be known upon earthand all nations learn your saving help.

R. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.

Let the nations be glad and exultfor you rule the world with justice. With fairness you rule the peoples, you guide the nations on earth.

R. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.

The earth has yielded its fruitfor God, our God, has blessed us.May God still give us his blessingtill the ends of the earth revere him.

R. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.

The Second Reading: 1 Peter 2: 4-9

Read by His Excellency Garvin Nicholas, High Commissioner for the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago

A reading from the first Letter of Saint Peter

The Lord is the living stone, rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him; set yourselves close to him so that you too, the holy priesthood that offers the spiritual sacrifices which Jesus Christ has made acceptable to God, may be living stones making a spiritual house. As scripture says: See how I lay in Zion a precious cornerstone that I have chosen and the man who rests his trust on it will not be disappointed. That means that for you who are believers, it is precious; but for unbelievers, the stone rejected by the builders has proved to be the keystone, a stone to stumble over, a rock to bring men down. They stumble over it because they do not believe in the word; it was the fate in store for them. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a consecrated nation, a

people set apart to sing the praises of God who called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation

Praise to you, O Christ, king of eternal glory.Make your home in me,as I make mine in you, says the Lord;whoever remains in mebears fruit in plenty.Praise to you, O Christ, king of eternal glory.

GOSPEL: JOHN 15: 1-8

Read by Father Emmanuel H. PierreThe Lord be with you.And with your spirit.A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘I am the true vine,and my Father is the vinedresser.Every branch in me that bears no fruithe cuts away,and every branch that does bear fruit he prunesto make it bear even more.You are pruned already,by means of the word that I have spoken to you.Make your home in me, as I make mine in you.As a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself,but must remain part of the vine,neither can you unless you remain in me.I am the vine,you are the branches.Whoever remains in me, with me in him,bears fruit in plenty;for cut off from me you can do nothing.Anyone who does not remain in meis like a branch that has been thrown away– he withers;

10

these branches are collected and thrown on the fire, and they are burnt. If you remain in meand my words remain in you,you may ask what you willand you shall get it.It is the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit, and then you will be my disciples.’

The Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Eucharistic Prayer IIYou are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness.Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray,by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall,so that they may become for usthe Body and Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayedand entered willingly into his Passion,he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it,and gave it to his disciples, saying:Take this, all of you, and eat of it,

13

for this is my Body, which will be given up for you.In a similar way, when supper was ended,he took the chaliceand, once more giving thanks,he gave it to his disciples, saying:Take this, all of you, and drink from it,for this is the Chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for manyfor the forgiveness of sins.Do this in memory of me.The mystery of faith; We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrectionuntil you come again.

Therefore, as we celebratethe memorial of his Death and Resurrection,we offer you, Lord, the Bread of life and the Chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthyto be in your presence and minister to you.Humbly we praythat, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ,we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.Remember, Lord, your Church, spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Francis our Pope and Vincent our Bishopand all the clergy.Remember also our brothers and sisterswho have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy:welcome them into the light of your face.Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,with the blessed Apostles, and all the Saints who have pleased youthroughout the ages,we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify youthrough your Son, Jesus Christ.

14

Through him, and with him, and in him,O God, almighty Father,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honour is yours, for ever and ever.Amen.

Recessional ‘HOW GREAT THOU ART’

O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds thy hand has made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy pow’r throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to thee: How great thou art, how great thou art. Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to thee: How great thou art, how great thou art.

When through the woods and forest glades I wander And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees, When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart; When I shall bow in humble adoration, And there proclaim: my God, how great thou art.
