Humility: Mother of all Virtues Humility is the opposite of the sin of Pride. St. Teresa of Calcutta wrote: “It is in being humble that our love becomes real, devoted and ardent. If you are humble nothing will touch you, neither praise nor disgrace, because you know what you are.” Her humility list gives us a guide for our daily living to avoid the sin of pride and be humble: “Speak as little as possible about yourself; avoid curiosity; do not dwell on the faults of others; accept insults and injuries; accept contempt, being forgotten and disregarded; do not seek to be admired and loved.” These are just a few from her list.

“Learn to be humble by doing all the humble work and doing it for Jesus. You cannot learn humility from books; you learn it by accepting humiliations—they are gifts from God. If we accept these little humiliations with joy, they will help us to be holy, to have a meek and humble heart like

Jesus.” St. Teresa of Calcutta

Blessed Stanley Rother Stanley Rother, Saint of the Day for July 28, was a farmer from Okarche, Oklahoma and ordained May 25, 1963. He had attended the seminary here in San Antonio, and finished his studies at Mount St. Mary Seminary in Maryland. After serving for 5 years in the diocese of Oklahoma City-Tulsa, he answered the call to become a missionary in Guatemala. He worked tirelessly with the locals not only fulfilling his pastoral duties (5 Masses in four different locations on Sunday and as many as 1,000 baptisms a year) but assisting with farming and improving the farming methods. Guatemala’s civil war reached the highlands where his mission was by 1980. On the evening of July 28, 1981, three masked men entered the rectory and shot Fr. Rother to death. Pope Francis declared Fr. Stanley Rother a martyr on December 2, 2016 and he was beatified in Oklahoma City on September 23, 2017.

May the dedication, faith and service of Blessed Stanley Rother be a source of strength for each of us

and our country.

St. Martha On Wednesday July 29, we celebrate the feast of St. Martha, sister to Mary and Lazarus. Martha’s great glory is her simple and strong statement of faith in Jesus after her brother’s death. “Jesus told her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ She said to him, ‘Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world’” (John 11:25-27).

Feast Day Raffle The Feast Day Raffle will be held after the 6:00 pm Mass

on Saturday, August 15, as we honor the Blessed Virgin

on the Feast of the Assumption.

Please sell your raffle tickets. There are numerous, very

generous prizes. Thank you for your gratitude and prayers

for our parish family.

St. Michael the Archangel During these troubling times, let us pray to St. Michael

to defend us against the evil in the world. From

Scripture and tradition, we know he is responsible to

combating Satan, escorting the faithful to heaven at their

hour of death, champion of all Christians and the Church

itself, and calling men from life on Earth to their heavenly

judgement.

St. Michael, defend us in battle.

Seventeenth Sunday Ordinary time

Wisdom is the most precious gift a person can have. Without it all

other things are useless because we won’t know how to use them.

Wisdom is not the same as knowledge. Knowledge is acquired through

hard work; whereas wisdom is a gift from God.

How often have we sought the advice of an older person to help us

with some task or decision? These older individuals are often wiser

than we are for many reasons, but mostly their wisdom allows us to

truly understand what is important in life. Through them we can

see life from God’s point of view and then be able to live the way

God wants us to live.

Without this understanding, it won’t matter how many possessions

we have, how successful we are, we will not be happy.

Its like the story of the overachiever who wanted to be the best. After

years of working hard, achieving wealth and acclaim they still had not

found happiness. When disaster struck in the form of a heart attack,

they finally prayed for guidance. God answered their prayer, giving

them wisdom to see life as God sees it, not man.

May we find our hidden treasure and be given the wisdom to use it

as God wants us to.

ARCHDIOCESE COVID-19 REPORTING REQUIREMENTS

The Archdiocese of San Antonio is tracking all incidents of COVID-19 to Archdiocesan Institutions/facilities. In an effort to account for the impact COVID-19 is having on the Archdiocese, it has instituted a reporting requirement. As a result, we have a requirement for all parishioners affected by the COVID-19 Virus to report exposure, confirmed positive lab results and treatment/action undertaken. This is also an attempt to ensure treatment is being administered to those effected. A “COVID-19 Incident Form” has been uploaded on the parish website: www.sthcc.org. Please submit the incident form to the parish office for processing/reporting via email. Email the form to [email protected]. Strict confidentiality will be adhered to throughout the administrative process.

Prayer for Rain O God, in Whom we live and move, and have our being, grant us rain, in due abundance, that, being sufficiently helped with temporal, we may the more confidently seek after eternal gifts. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE ORDER OF MASS 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 25-26, 2020

The Introductory Rites

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the

Holy Spirit.

R. Amen.

Greeting

The Lord be with you.

R. And with your spirit.

Penitential Act

Brethren (brothers and sisters), let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. R. I confess to almighty God and to you, my broth-ers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (Strike breast three times): through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. R. Amen.

The Kyrie

The Gloria

R. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Fa-ther, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect

O God, protector of those who hope in you, without whom nothing has firm foundation, nothing is holy, be-stow in abundance your mercy upon us and grant that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may use the good things that pass in such a way as to hold fast even now to those that ever endure. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

R. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word

First Reading. A reading from the first Book of Kings (3:5, 7-12) The LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream at night. God said, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.” Solomon answered: “O LORD, my God, you have made me, your servant, king to succeed my father David; but I am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act. I serve you in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a people so vast that it cannot be num-bered or counted. Give your servant, therefore, an un-derstanding heart to judge your people and to distin-guish right from wrong. For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?” The LORD was pleased that Solomon made this re-quest. So God said to him: “Because you have asked for this—not for a long life for yourself, nor for riches, nor for the life of your enemies, but for understanding so that you may know what is right—I do as you request-ed. I give you a heart so wise and understanding that there has never been anyone like you up to now, and after you there will come no one to equal you.” The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 119

R. Lord, I love your commands.

Second Reading A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans (8:28-30) Brothers and sisters: We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he also predes-tined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sis-ters. And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified. . The word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

V. Lord, have mercy. R. Lord, have mercy. V. Christ, have mercy. R. Christ, have mercy. V. Lord, have mercy. R. Lord, have mercy.

Or: V. Kyrie, eleison. R. Kyrie, eleison. V. Christe, eleison. R. Christe, eleison. V. Kyrie, eleison. R. Kyrie, eleison.

Page 5: MASS INTENTIONS June Devotion: Sacred Heart of Jesussthcc.org/Bulletin.pdf · The Capital Campaign Committee with their chairperson Deacon Rick and I would like to thank all parishioners

Alleluia,

Alleluia, alleluia.

Blessed are you Father, Lord of heaven and earth; for you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel The Lord be with you.

R. And with your spirit.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

(13:44-52 or 13:44-46)

(Include bracketed text for the long form)

R. Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus said to his disciples: “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it. [Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind. When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away. Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.

“Do you understand all these things?” They answered, “Yes.” And he replied, “Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.”]

The Gospel of the Lord,

R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Homily

The Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Fa-ther; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, At the words that follow, up to and including ‘and be-came man’, all bow. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was cruci-fied under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accord-

ance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

We pray to the Lord.

R. Lord hear our prayer.

Pray, brethren (brothers and sisters), that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Fa-ther. R. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. Then the Priest says the Prayer over the Offerings, at the end of which the people acclaim: R. Amen.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

The Lord be with you.

R. And with your spirit.

Lift up your hearts.

R. We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

R. It is right and just.

After the singing of the Sanctus the congregation kneels for the remainder of the Eucharistic Prayer. After the words of Consecration, the priest says: The mystery of faith.

R. We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again. Or:

R. When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again. Or:

R. Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free.

Then the Priest alone continues:

Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the blessed Passion, the Resurrection from the dead… Commemoration of the Dead Remember also, Lord, your servants N. and N., who have gone before us … At the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer the Priest takes the chalice and the paten with the host and, raising both, he alone says: Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, al-mighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever. R. Amen.

R. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live and reign for ever and ever. R. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. R. And with your spirit. Let us offer each other the sign of peace.
