Auckley and Hayfield Lane

Primary schools have teamed

up with both Auckley Parish

Council and Doncaster Council

to try to combat dog fouling in

the area.

The children have designed posters that

will be displayed around the village

encouraging dog owners to ‗bag it and bin

it‘. We have published the winning posters

in this months Arrow along with some of

the runner up‘s. Well done to everyone

who took part.

We also have news of some of our young

local fund raisers who have put their

energy and hearts into raising funds for

different charities. Well done to all of

them, they are an inspiration to others!

Talking about charity, Kilham Hall

Community Centre will help host a special

fun day in June to raise funds for two

charities, Parkinson's and Moto neuron

disease. The day is organised by ‘Branton‘s

Angels‘ Lyndsey, Rachel and Emma. If

anyone wants to get involved, help out or

run a stall, please get in touch, their details

are in this months arrow.

The June issue deadline will be Wednesday

18th May, if anyone would like to submit an

article or an advert, please send it to me by

this date.

Best Wishes

Betty’s Comes to Finningley!

If you had wandered into Finningley Village Hall on

Wednesday 6th April you could have been forgiven

for thinking you were in a Betty‘s Tea Shop.

The selection of home made cakes certainly

rivalled their selection and what the smart

waitresses in their lacy aprons lacked in silver

service they made up for with their friendly

welcome and willingness to chat.

This was A Taste of Easter and for £2 you were

offered a pot of tea or coffee, a hot cross bun or

scone and a choice from an amazing array of home

made cakes and buns.

Thank you to everyone who helped, on the day

serving, clearing or washing up and for all the

baking. It was enjoyable, hard work which raised

over £800 for Finningley Church Funds.

Someone said they hoped they wouldn‘t have to

wait until next Easter, inspired by this success who

knows, watch this space?

The last flying Vulcan bomber has returned to its former Cold War base. The

iconic aircraft will spend the summer months based

at Robin Hood Airport, the former RAF Finningley

that was the home of the Vulcan in the 1960s.

The deal could be the first stage in the develop-

ment of a visitor centre that will eventually be

linked to a facility to inspire the next generation of

engineers and technicians. Vulcan to the Sky Trust

CEO Dr Robert Pleming said: ‗We are thrilled that

the last flying Vulcan has come home. We all feel

that something very special could be created here,

but I must emphasise that these are early days in

the discussions.‘

‗Someone Special‘ in the morning!

I would like to nominate my line manager Jane Christie to receive

This months Flowers for Someone Special.

This may seem strange to put forward your boss, but my boss has been there for me

though the very rough couple of months that I have just had and am still going

through. Writing letters on my behalf being there as my moaning person when I needed

to relieve some tension or throwing a tantrum lol. She‘s pulled me through with her

wisdom, help and funny sense of humour and most of all just by being her.

This is why I would like to put Jane forward to receive flowers from you as I think she

deserves them, for her kindness above and beyond her job role. Thankyou Jane xx

Joseph Sidebottom wanted to raise

money to try to stop people dying from

cancer. He thought long and hard and

realised he needed to make some

sacrifice, therefore he had his much

loved long hair cut short on Thursday

7th April!

Joseph hopes to raise as much money as possible

and will donate it to the Weston Park Hospital in

Sheffield which is currently treating his Granddad.

Joseph‘s last count before going to print was

£1246.70! Thank you to Joseph‘s hair stylist, Jayne

Williams, owner of Flair Hairstylists in Branton

who had her salon taken over by lots of excited

children!!

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far to

this excellent hospital charity. Weston Park

Hospital in Sheffield which treats people suffering from Cancer is one of only three hospitals of it‘s

kind in the UK. The Weston Park Cancer Charity

has many projects it helps to fund. One such

project is maintaining a database which stores

details of every case of cancer recorded in the

country. This information is essential to the

research and development of treatments to help

both present and future cancer patients. There

are many smaller projects which directly impact

on the comfort of patients being treated at the

hospital.

For as long as I can remember I

have always been interested in all

kinds of bikes and have always had

the thought of running my own

cycling related business. I ride regularly, mainly challenge rides like the C2C

and other long distance routes, sportifs and the

lung busting LakeLand loop …. These I do with

family and friends as cycling really is the best way

to keep fit and spend quality time with people who

are special to you.

My wife Victoria and daughter Hattie, are also keen

cyclists, and have done a few C2C‗s, our daughter

did her first aged 12 over 4 days and was pretty

pleased with herself!

We are Foster Carers and we always introduce

the children we look after to cycling, seeing the

happy smiling faces of these kids either on their

first bike, on the child seat or in the trailer is

something really special and I hope something

positive they will have to look back on.

Well, after 20 fantastically enjoyable years working

in Sales Management, running sales teams and

selling great brands such as Heineken, Stella Artois,

Boddingtons working for celebrities such as Ken

Hom and Ainsley Harriot and more recently being

part of the UK coffee shop revolution managing a

business channel for Costa Coffee I decided to

leave it all behind me and start up myself …

following my heart before it‘s too late! So Bicycle

Buddy was created!!

individually priced jobs we can cover any require-

ment you may have...

News from Auckley Junior, Infant and Nursery School

Castleton Trip

Our year 5 children have recently carried out a residential trip to Castleton in Derbyshire

as part of their topic work on ‘Contrasting Locations’. They looked at the differences and

similarities between the

village of Castleton and

their own village of Auckley.

Whilst in Castleton the

children were able to take

part in many activities such

as gem panning, making their

own fossils and the famous

egg drop challenge. The

children also visited the

Treak Cliff Cavern where

mineral Blue John is still

mined. They thoroughly

enjoyed their visit and many

found the scenery

spectacular.

Buon giorno, from Auckley foundation team.

Children in the foundation unit are currently learning about Italy.

They have participated in many different

activities, some of these include talking

about Italian foods, making pizzas, spaghetti

and ice cream and making junk models of

famous building. We took inspiration from

the artist Da Vinci and painted portraits of

their friends. In maths we threaded

patterns with coloured pasta, played Italian

games, handled money in the ice -cream

parlour and learnt to count in Italian. In

literacy we have learnt some common Italian

words and used them when playing in the role

- play Italian restaurant. We have written

food orders and taken on different roles in a

busy kitchen. Outside we have constructed a

mini Grand prix. Children have understood

the importance of working as a team in the

pit stop and are using ordinal numbers after

a race.

On the Wednesday of

the last week of term,

14 sixth form students

from the European

Society at Hayfield

School went to Auckley,

Branton, Hayfield Lane

and Bawtry primary

schools to teach Years 5

or 6 a little bit about

German Easter

traditions.

We started off by telling the

children how the Germans

celebrate Easter – the food they eat, the traditions they have, the things they make.

Then came the tricky bit... learning the German vocabulary. To our surprise, they learned the

German really quickly – and really well!

After this came the fun – the EGG DECORATING. Everyone got a hard-boiled dyed egg, and

decorated it however they chose. After a recap of the vocabulary, the children went out and had a

treasure hunt using their newly acquired vocabulary. They looked like they were having fun! At the

end of the session, the children came back in to collect a sticker and a mini Creme Egg... and that

was the end!

We hope they had as much fun as we did with them!

A huge THANK YOU to the Spar in Auckley for their donation of 108 eggs for the children to decorate.

Primary Schools at Easter!

Braking

Dear readers,

If you‘ve ever been in a nodding dog passenger in a car and got out feeling a bit queasy you‘ll know the

effects of ill-timed braking. Achieving a smooth, progressive and effective braking technique will make

every drive safer and more pleasurable for everyone involved.

Braking progressively and smoothly you must develop superb observation and anticipation skills, as this

allows you to begin braking earlier should any unexpected hazards arise. Effective braking is a skill that

requires practice. You should roll the pressure onto the brake pedal progressively; do most of the braking

in the middle phase; roll off the brake; again then select the best gear to make good progress. This

method always produces the smoothest drive.

Practice this technique by attempting to produce such a smooth drive that your passengers don‘t even

realise you are braking; decelerating gradually so that the nose of the car never dips. Well-timed braking

will usually make you faster from A to B. Take timing your arrival at a roundabout for example. Look well

ahead and asses the traffic on the roundabout, then time your arrival so that you don‘t have to stop. The

cars that sped past you as you were decelerating early, will be at a standstill trying to find first gear as you

slide past and get straight back on the accelerator.

Keep every drive as simple as possible by not over-

lapping braking steering and gear inputs.

Brake in a straight line.

Even with modern anti-lock brake systems (ABS), it

is always best to carry out any firm braking in a

straight line before making any steering changes. Any

racing driver will tell you that using your brakes in

the middle of a bend can upset the balance of the car

and affect its handling.

If a situation arises that requires mid-corner braking,

do so progressively to avoid locking the wheels. Vary

the brake pressure accordingly to the road surface

and conditions.
