Well, Catherine Middleton and

her sister Pippa, were truly the

stars of 2011! What a fabulous

day and how gorgeous they all

looked—well, nearly all of

them!

It was great to see people celebrating the wedding, it was an uplifting day and Kate

and William really do look like they are in love. Closer to home, we had a few celebrations of our own and we have some

photos inside this months issue.

You may have noticed last months issue

was a week late, unfortunately, there was a problem with machinery at the printers and the delay was unavoidable.

Cantley with Branton, Auckley and Finningley Parish Councils have their newsletters printed in this months issue,

find out what's happening in your parish and of any changes since May‘s elections.

Don‘t forget to pencil in Brantons Fun Day—Saturday 18th June at Kilham Hall playing Fields, everyone is welcome.

The July issue deadline will be Wednesday 15th July, if anyone would like to submit an

article or an advert, please send it to me by this date.

Best Wishes

Direction For A More

Personalised Customer Service

Kath Doyle, owner of Bawtry Travel has provided travel expertise to the

people of Doncaster for nearly 30 years from her office in Bawtry. From 1st March 2011 Kath developed her business further so she could provide a more personal approach to both loyal customers and new with more

flexible working hours from her home based office in Branton.

Like many traditional businesses, Bawtry Travel is changing to accommodate the more demanding

needs of clients. The trend of 24/7 technology means that traditional high street premises are

becoming increasingly unnecessary. Now clients will also be able to contact Kath between 8am and

8pm by phone to discuss their travel plans or arrange an appointment at her home-based office.

Kath said:

I want to make it as easy as possible for clients to plan their perfect holiday, including the convenience of

home visits. Leisure time is so precious to people these days, and as we are all being careful with our money,

it makes sense to see what possibilities are available and help customers plan precisely what they require at

a time best suited to them. This is the element of the job that I love – using my 40 years experience in the

Travel Industry, booking UK breaks, European & Worldwide holidays, weddings abroad, honeymoons, cruises,

and business travel all over the world.

New services include a range of opportunities to discuss a picture of the clients‘ ideal break, be it for

a few days, weeks or months. This can now be in the clients own home, by telephone, by email or by

appointment with Kath at her new home-based office in order to offer a wide range of travel

possibilities to create the perfect trip.

Willow Glen Celebrate the Royal Wedding in Style

The residents of Willow Glen in Branton celebrated the wedding of Prince William & Kate Middleton with a street party. Guests started arriving at

2.15 p.m and the last attendees departed at 8:30p.m.

A good time was had by all and everyone who could attend did, leading to a renewal of the Willow Glen community spirit. Moves are afoot to create

an excuse for the next event, probably the

Diamond Jubilee!

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER

MAY/JUNE 2011

Proposed Gating Order, Common Lane, Auckley

In the April edition of the ‗Arrow‘ we reported that a large number of parishioners had objected to

the proposed Gating Order because, although Doncaster Council‘s Neighbourhood Services had no wish to restrict or prevent non-motorised access to Common Lane, the wording of the relevant

legislation appeared to prevent access to pedestrians and horse riders. After careful consideration, DMBC has made a decision not to introduce the proposed Gating Order.

Play Equipment for Riverside Park

The Parish Council has accepted a quotation from SMP Playgrounds to supply and install items of

play equipment on Riverside Park, subject to planning permission being granted. A local architect is to draw up the plans, and hopefully the project will be carried out later in the year.

Dog Fouling on Riverside Park

In spite of numerous requests, a small number of irresponsible dog owners persist in allowing their dogs to run free off the lead on the football pitch and other areas of Riverside Park and do not

clean up after their pets. DMBC‘s Neighbourhood Services Officers have and will continue to monitor the play areas, and will prosecute offenders.

Members of the Parish Council

At the recent election there were eight nominations for nine places, therefore the nominees were

returned unopposed and a ninth member was co-opted onto the Council at the May meeting.

Your Parish Councillors:

Mrs. Jennifer Worthington (Chairperson) [email protected] Mr. Stephen Featherstone (Vice Chairperson) [email protected]

Mr. Ian Butterfield [email protected] Mr. Jason Fletcher [email protected]

Mrs. Julia Staniforth [email protected] Mr. Ian Swainston [email protected]

Mr. Gary Warrender [email protected] Mrs. Marjorie Caygill (Clerk) [email protected]

Meetings of the Parish Council are held on the second Wednesday of each month – apart from

August when there is no meeting. The meetings are held at the Auckley Parish Centre, commenc-ing at 7.00 p.m.

Members of the public are welcome to attend and a time is set aside at the beginning of the meeting for public participation.

Branton Juniors Under 14's have just finished a superb season in which they

finished as runners up in the Doncaster and District Premier League.

At the end of the season the team also travelled to the Netherlands over the Easter Weekend and took

part in a very competitive tournament in The Hague and in a friendly against a team from Hekelingen in

Rotterdam. In the tournament were 8 strong teams, the Branton boys began their international football

careers with a 2-1 win over CV Berkel. The next game was against the Tournament hosts SV Erasmus

and the Branton lads fought very hard for a well earned 0-0 draw. The last game in the group stages gave

Branton a 4-0 win over Delta Sport. In the final play off game in the tournament Branton were to play

local giants Alexandria, a very difficult game in scorching conditions resulted in an excellent 3-1 victory for

Branton.

The Branton boys were also awarded with the tournament 'Fair Play' trophy and the Branton striker, Tobi

Nicol won the 'Player of the Tournament' award. The following day Branton travelled to play VV

Hekelingen, one of the largest clubs in Rotterdam. Despite creating lots of chances in the first half

Branton were unable to capitalise and the half time score was 0-0. However within 5 minutes of the

second half starting Branton took the lead with a goal from Tobi Nicol. Further second half goals from

Tom Rhymes, Conor Barker (x2) and James Milner secured a 5-0 win for Branton.

Fundraising for the tour was assisted greatly by sponsors including; Kim Stones Property Services, Flair

Hair Stylists, BB Conveyors, Bentleys, Graham and Nuala Mould, Spar Auckley, Keith Foster, Three

Counties Energy Assessments, Furniture Factors, Heather Smith Beautician and Stefanos for Hair.

Cantley With Branton Parish Council

June 2011 Newsletter

Annual Parish Council Meeting Gillian Warrender and Jennifer Worthington were re-elected

as Chair and Vice-Chair respectively at the annual parish council meeting on 18 May 2011. As the four

year term of office for all councillors expired on 5 May and as only six nominations (all from existing

members) were received for the seven seats on the council there was no requirement for DMBC to call

an election. The parish council duly co-opted Neville Williams to the vacancy at the meeting and a full list

of members of the council is given below.

Please note the June meeting will take place on Thursday 9 June at 7.00 p.m.

Notice Board at Old Cantley Unfortunately the notice board has had to be removed due to the

support mechanism severing leaving the board unsafe. Arrangements are being made for a replacement

notice board to be installed. Residents are asked to contact the Clerk if any specific information is

required or refer to the website.

Kilham Lane Recreation Ground – Prohibiting of Dogs and Provision of a Ball

Wall There have been a number of occasions where members of the public have been observed

walking dogs on the recreation ground. The parish council wish to stress that dogs are strictly prohibited

from entering the recreation ground for health and safety reasons due to the activities that take place and

in particular because there is a children‘s playground. Arrangements are currently being made for a dog

litter bin to be sited on the field leading from Valley Drive where a suitable circular walk way exists and

dogs are not prohibited.

Quotations are being sought for the building of a ball wall at the recreation ground and it is hoped that

work will commence in the near future.

Kilham Hall Fun Day – June 18 2011 The parish council are pleased to be able to support the

arranging of a Fun Day by making available (free of charge) the use of the recreation ground and its

facilities. The event will raise funds for two local charities in aid of Parkinson‘s and Motor Neurone disease

so it is hoped that residents will support this event.

News from Branton St Wilfrid’s C.E. Primary School

Recycle It!

We have a very enthusiastic Eco

Friends group in school, with two

representatives from every class.

Our Eco Friends plan activities to

raise environmental awareness in

school-woe betide any member of

staff who forgets to switch a light

off when a room is not in use!

Our Eco Friends devised and or-

ganised a creative art and design

technology competition to encour-

age children to think about recy-

cling. Key Stage 2 children were

asked to make a robot out of recy-

cled materials and children in the Infants were asked to complete a collage robot picture with

recycled materials. We were very impressed with the huge number of entries and also the amazing

creativity and effort shown by the children.

where we had to go around the mine site and identify different types of rocks and how they were

being used. It was very windy and it was quite tricky to read all the interesting information!

The main part of our day was to actually go down the mine. To make sure we were safe every-one

had to wear a safety helmet and

carry a miner‟s light. We travelled

down under the ground in a big cage

and we were travelling 5 feet every

second! We were a long way under

the ground! We had a special ex-

pert to take us on a tour under the

ground and he told us lots of facts

about what it was like to be a miner.

We even got to crawl down some

small tunnels to touch an actual coal

seam. As part of our tour we all had

to turn our lamps off to see just

how dark it was – it was extremely

dark !

We all thought the visit was amazing

and we learnt lots of information to

help with our Science work in school.

Walsingham Children's Pilgrimage. Recently thirteen children from Jubilate went to the 2011

Walsingham Children‟s Pilgrimage, held annually over three days at the Shrine of Our Lady of

Walsingham in Norfolk. Some children went for the first time, some had been several times

before. This year's theme was 'Catch the Vision' to celebrate the 950th anniversary of the

vision which led to the building of the first Holy House in Walsingham. We met old and new

friends, worshipped, had a party, played games on inflatables and had a wonderful time! We would

like to thank Cantley Methodist Church for their kind donation to our Walsingham fund.

We shall camp on the Walsingham Youth Pilgrimage as usual in August of this year, a five day

event for older Jubilate children and past members. We shall also be taking part in the annual day

of activities and music at the shrine of Our Lady of Egmanton.

We also hope to be cutting a CD round about the last week in May, which will be a recording of our

favourite worship songs. We will be doing this to raise money for a charity. Watch this space!

Walsingham Jubilate went on a 3 hour trip down to Walsingham in Norfolk. Every year they have

a children‟s pilgrimage at the shrine, and also a theme. This year the theme was “1061 and all that,

catch the vision” when Lady Recheldis saw a vision of Mary, holding a house. The holy house was

built in 1061, and it is still there today. The house had its 950th birthday party, with a disco

afterwards. Every group that come to the pilgrimage made a birthday card and party hats for

everyone in their group. We also did the holy mile walk, and some people did it bare foot! At the

shrine, we sang fun and lively songs with Bishop Lindsay and Father Stephen. Walsingham was a

very good trip and everyone enjoyed it!

By Lucia Slade and Ella Sykes

Jubilate Concert Jubilate were invited by the Minister and congregation of Cantley Methodist

Church to lead a concert there in aid of St John's Hospice and Burkina Faso.

We were delighted to be asked, and spent many hours perfecting a selection of our nine favourite

worship songs, eight of which we sang and one which we sang and signed to also. In between our

songs members of the congregation did a puppet show about Noah's Ark and read poems and the

Minister, Tom Read, talked to us (and made us laugh) about how to share God's love. Afterwards

we enjoyed meeting everyone and having refreshments. We helped to raise £320 for two very

good causes. We were asked if we would like to do the concert again next year, to which our

unanimous answer was 'YES!'

We would like to thank Mr Dilks who played for us, Mr Elvin, Mrs Thompson, Mrs Shephard, Mrs

Atkinson and Mr and Mrs Woodward who helped us with our singing and came to the concert with

us, and all the parents who came to watch us. It was a truly unforgettable night! rom Jubilate and Mrs Dilks

Drama Club recently performed a production for their school. The play was called “Snow White

and the Seven Micro-Chaps!” It was a modern computer version of the well known fairy tale Snow

White and the Seven Dwarves. Instead of having the seven dwarves we had the seven Micro-

Chaps (The Rowes) and instead of the mirror we had a laptop! There was an evil queen (Queen

Virus) who lived with her courtiers and her advisor (CD Ron). She wanted to kill Snow White but

when she tried it didn„t work! Finally she tried again to kill Snow White and it worked, Snow White

was dead! Then a prince came along and gave her one kiss and she woke up but when the queen

asked her laptop, “Who„s the fairest in the land?” the laptop replied, “Snow White”. The queen was

furious and left the kingdom! The kingdom then lived happily ever after! The school enjoyed the

drama play. Mia

Lawrence said, “I

really enjoyed it,

it was the best

one so far!”

The Royal Wedding, Branton

St Wilfrid’s

Style!

As an introduction to the Royal Wedding, we held a pretend ‘wedding’ in school. Our

Year 1 pupils learn about the different reasons why some people go to church so we

asked Year 1 to take on all the wedding roles. As everyone wanted to take part we had

many bridesmaids, flower girls, ushers and page boys (some with the responsibility for con-

fetti throwing!) The ladies from St Wilfrid‟s Church prepared posies for the bride and

flower girls and button holes for the boys and one of parents kindly provided a vintage car

ride so that our bride could arrive at school in style! Father John led a lovely assembly ex-

plaining the importance of the promises made in a wedding ceremony and caring for loved

ones through the different challenges of life. We later enjoyed a whole school lunch with a

top table for the wedding party, toasts, speeches and cutting of the cake followed by the

wedding disco!

As part of our project on the Tudors, Class 5 went to Gainsborough Old Hall. When we got there,

we walked though the Great Hall. After that, we went back into the Great Hall and put some cos-

tumes on to recreate a feast just as when Henry VIII was there. We pretended to be dancers,

jesters, jugglers, servers, Henry and his wife, and the Lord Thomas Burgh and his wife, who owned

the hall. We found out that the cooks cooked swans, lobsters and fish. After that we went into

Thomas and his wife‟s

bedroom, and did Tudor

activities like playing

cards, and writing in a

Tudor style. We enjoyed

all of the activities we did

and found out lots! By

As soon as we arrived, we saw the Meerkats, It was time for their breakfast and we were

fascinated watching them roll their grapes along the ground, until they were coated in dirt,

before eating them. None of the rangers could explain why!

Later, we wandered through the Lemur woods, trying to keep as quiet as possible, and

several brave animals actually approached us.

Next, we had a very informative talk by the Education Officer who let us touch a Royal

Python and several strange lizards.

After dinner, we braved the slides in the Jungle Play Barn before heading off to visit the

African Plains, were we observed zebras, ostriches, Ankole cattle, Lecheve and Sitatunga

antelopes.

In Lion Country we learnt all about the

thirteen African lions rescued from

appalling conditions in a Rumanian zoo.

They thoroughly entertained us by

chasing each other around and

sharpening their claws on tree trunks.

Finally, a visit to the brand new Forest

Adventure play area and the gift shop

completed a very enjoyable and

educational day.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists

Road Basics Dear readers,

The majority of car-related collisions occur near T-junctions, cross roads, side turnings, roundabouts, or

forks in the road. 95 per cent of them are caused by driver error.

By using Advanced Driving techniques and knowledge, and by developing a systematic approach to you‘re

driving you will massively reduce the likelihood of such an ‗accident‘ happening to you.

Lets consider the system used in Advanced Driving when approaching a junction.

Information. Use your mirrors and all-round vision to check the movements of other road uses. Then

consider a signal before changing course.

Position. Check your mirrors. Carefully move the vehicle into the correct position for the junction.

Speed. Check your mirrors. Adjust your speed as necessary to prepare for the turn. Signal if necessary

and brake progressively. The tighter arc of a left turn generally requires a slower speed than that of a right

turn.

Gear. Once you‘re at the right speed, select the correct gear. Reconsider a signal before turning, and

make a final mirror check.

Accelerate. As you complete the turn, accelerate smoothly to an appropriate speed, bearing in mind the

driving conditions.

Remember.

Brakes are for slowing, gears are for going;

don‘t use the gears to slow you down.

Always drive in a way that allows you to change

your plan if a signal is ignored.

Remember all junctions are hazards.

Pull away from a junction only when it‘s com-

pletely safe to do so.

Always consider signalling well in advanced of a

manoeuvre and take up the correct road position

decisively.

Watch out for cyclists who ignore the red light

at traffic lights.

Always select the correct lane and signalling proce-

dure when approaching and negotiating roundabouts.

Your entry and exit should be decisive, well ob-

served, and safe.

If you are interested in the courses that we offer,

you‘ll be able to find this information on the Institute

of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk

Impatience I feel a bit a rant coming on this time! Must be my age... am I turning into a grumpy old man? No, don‘t

answer that! Anyway, a few weeks ago I was on holiday in Cumbria. I was towing my caravan over the

A66 from Scotch Corner and maintaining a steady 50mph (the maximum on a single track road when

towing). I try and act conscientiously, so if I see a queue of traffic behind I will pull over and let them pass.

However, today, there didn‘t seem to be much on the road.

But as we neared Keswick I noticed an open topped sports car close behind me, in fact very close behind

me! So close, that had I needed to stop quickly then my caravan would have become a garage for him and

his little car! Unfortunately, the road prevented me from pulling over, so he would have to wait for a few

minutes. As I looked in my mirrors I could see him weaving in and out, trying to get past, risking a quick

try, only to have to dart back in again, or risk a head on collision. He was really impatient.

I knew my turning was fast approaching, and soon enough the road began open up on the left for me to

turn. Checking my mirrors were clear I indicated and moved over carefully. So imagine my surprise when

suddenly the man in his sports car tried to shoot up the inside and undertake me! He had nowhere to go

and was left with three options: 1. Take out the caravan. 2. Become very friendly with the dry stone wall.

3. Back off!

Thankfully, he chose the latter, and backed off, but not without a long blast on the horn and some inter-

esting sign language, which of course a man of the cloth wouldn‘t understand! I wondered if he too was

meaning to turn off here, and he was just a little too quick in his manoeuvre. No, sadly not, as I peeled off

to the left, he carried on, at much increased speed, along the main road. How easily this could have ended

in disaster for all concerned, and for no other reason than impatience.

As we look around we can see impatience all around us – at the checkout, at the school crossing when

people fail to stop even when the crossing patrol is in the road, in our own lives when we simply can‘t

wait for something or someone, and the list goes on.

The Bible tells us the impatience is far from God‘s ideal. Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, ―When you

meet together, you don't really celebrate the Lord's Supper. You even start eating before everyone gets

to the meeting, and some of you go hungry, while

others get drunk.‖

It would appear that one person‘s impatience can

lead to someone else‘s suffering. It was true then, and

I believe it is true today. What do you think?

Blessings
