Editors Letter..... What a

start to the year! As if it’s not hard enough to motivate yourself at the

beginning of January with the end of the Christmas holidays, the excess pounds

and a hefty visa bill! I have to admit, it was

lovely at first and the children thought it was

fantastic. However, lets hope we have had our lot

for 2010 so we can all get back to normal.

We have some photographs in this months issue of

the hugely popular Auckley Christmas Market

which attracted a staggering 9000 visitors this year.

Also, for the first time since the tradition began,

Cantley with Branton Parish Council held their

Carol singing in the warmth of Kilham Hall, the

new community centre photographed on the right.

Normally, local residents as well as children and

staff from St Wilfrids school in Branton would

freeze around the tree outside the Three Horse

Shoes pub, so I must say (not being a fan of the

cold), Kilham Hall was a welcome change of venue

and I think many locals agreed, as there was an

exceptional turnout.

If you have children of school age, you may be

wondering what to do at half term which is very

early this year, schools break up on 12th February,

Yorkshire wildlife Park is open all week and they

have some new residents, Zebra, Giant Rabbits and

Red River Hogs for us to meet. Also, local football

coach, John Murray, has set up a football coaching

business and will be running coaching sessions on

Kilham Lane playing field throughout the holiday

period, read the news page for details.

For those of you battling against the traffic each

morning due to our long awaited road works, you

can find some information inside on all the dates

for road closures till April 2010.

I know there are many residents in Blaxton who

would like to receive a copy of The Arrow. I have

started to leave a quantity at Finningley post office,

so if you know someone in Blaxton who would like

a copy, please let them know where they can get

one.

Best Wishes

First snow fall of its

kind for many

The first week of the New Year saw weather

conditions not experienced here in over 30 years.

Schools closed, businesses closed and roads closed

as the snow kept on falling!

At first the excitement, especially with the younger

generation, was immense, but after a week even

they were getting fed up! Reports of Councils

running out of salt and with more bad weather

planned, January was not looking like a good start

to 2010.

Luckily, the weather changed just in time and after

nearly two weeks, the snow disappeared. They say

a hot summer always follows a bad winter... fingers

crossed everyone!

Q. I’ve never had a dog before so would like some advice on what I

should be doing to make sure my new puppy is healthy and happy

during its first few months?

A. I‘m glad to hear you‘re taking the health and wellbeing of your new puppy seriously.

Having a new pet is an exciting experience but it‘s important to remember that any young animal is especially vulnerable and you should be aware of essential health and overall

checks that need to be carried out during its early life.

We offer a package at the practice called the ‗Best Start in Life‘ which

covers everything you will need to ensure your puppy (or kitten) is fully prepared for its future life. For £75, the package includes:

Microchip

Primary vaccination course (two injections)

Flea and worm treatment

Bag of Royal Canin food 10% off neutering

This covers the most important aspects of a new puppy (or kitten‘s) life but please ask in

the practice for more details about how the Best Start in Life package can benefit your pet.

See-Saw Club Preschool is a

registered charity and is held in

Finningley Church Of England

School. Being within the school gives the

children the opportunity to become familiar with a

school environment from an early age. They can

stay at See-Saw until they join reception, either at

Finningley or their chosen school.

We open Monday to Friday 9.15 - 11.45 term time

only. Tuesday and Thursday are for children aged

2 and over. Monday, Wednesday, Friday are for

children aged 3 and over.

We offer quality care and education for children

aged 2 - 4 years old, in a small group setting with

excellent staff to child ratios. We are Ofsted

registered for 20 children and have 4 members of

staff who are committed to ensuring the children

get the best possible start with their learning and

development by providing a safe and friendly

environment that consists of developmentally

appropriate activities and equipment. Our main

focus is for the children to learn while playing and

having fun.

We offer a variety of activities both indoors and

outdoors and will shortly have our own purpose

built outdoor area which will allow the children to

explore and use their imagination in a wider

variety of ways. We also have access to up-to date

IT resources. The classroom provides the children

with the opportunity of becoming more

independent - child friendly toilet facilities and

storage around the room to aid independent

choice and healthy mid morning snacks are

available.

We believe pre-school is an important part of a

child's development, it encourages them make

friends, to become more independent and also

helps to develop their confidence before transition

into reception class. We have contact with a

consultant teacher, the reception teacher at

Finningley School as well as other local nursery

school teachers.

Prices are £5.00 per session and we also offer

early years funding for children from the term

after their 3rd birthday, so they can receive up to

5 free sessions per week

If you would like more information or if you would

like to visit the group to see what we have to

offer then please contact Elaine 07855 063 098.

The Christmas Market was again

a huge success with over 9000 visitors! It was a bitterly cold evening, but

that didn‘t stop the crowds. There were more

stalls this year than last and lots of variety.

There were some bargains to be had as the

evening went on but if you want the pick of the

bunch, you need to get there early. Marilyn

Cockett, chief organiser said ―It gets bigger and

better every year and we try to bring

something for everyone. We have

a fantastic team of committee members who

want to provide the best community event

possible, thank you to you all for your help and

support over the past 12 months. I would also

like to say a massive thank you to

EVERYONE who voluntarily turned out

on the morning and again at night to put up and

take down the stalls, and to everyone else who

helped out on the day, without people like you, the market would not be able to take place. I would also like to

take this opportunity to thank DMBC Neighbourhood Managers and their team, Tourist Information Business

Manager, local Police, resident's in the vicinity of the market‖

The Auckley Show committee would like to thank everyone who supported the Children‘s Christmas

party held at The Parish hall in Auckley in December. We had a great turnout and the wintry weather

added that extra sparkle. We hope everyone that attended enjoyed it as much as the committee did!

We would like to thank Barbara Reddington for her help in transforming the room into a fabulous grotto,

a very big thank you to Santa, Mr Don Blakey, he managed to chat to 83 children in 2 hours listening to all

their Christmas wishes. Archdales of Thorne for donating the mince pies and to the following for donating

raffle prizes: Eagle and Child, Auckley Friary, Black and Decker (lakeside Village), Terry and Jane (flair

insurance and hairdresser) and The Spar in Auckley.

This was the first time we have done anything like this and because it was such a success we hope to make

it another annual event, thanks again to everyone who supported us, it wouldn't be possible without you

Redundancy Brings New

Challenge for Local Roofing

Contractor

After gaining 20 years experience with a Doncaster

based roofing company, Eliot Grant from Old Cantley,

faced the devastating news of redundancy as his

employer succumbed to the recession. There have

been many stories similar to this throughout the last

year and Eliot was determined to see this as an

opportunity.

Eliot decided it was time for him to run his own business, ―I just

saw this situation as an opportunity. Your own business is

something you dream of, but sometimes you just don't have the

guts to go for it‖ says Eliot.

Eliot contacted Chris Adams from Success Doncaster, he

helped Eliot write a business plan and apply for a business grant.

―Chris was a great help and pointed me in the right direction‖.

Within 2 months EPG Roofing was born, offering the public the

best roofing services locally.

Business started on 1st January 2010 and Eliot is already

receiving a steady amount of enquiries, thanks to the Arrow magazines.

Eliot specialises in all roofing requirements and is also skilled in all parts of the building trade.

If you would like Eliot to give you a quote for some

work call him on 07850 976791.

If you need any help with your business, developing

new skills or finding a job, contact

Auckley Parish Council wishes to thank a number of people who have contributed towards the well-being

of the community during the year:

Mr. and Mrs. Cockett and the All 4 All Committee for once more providing a very successful

Christmas Market on 15 December 2009. We understand a record number of visitors attended this

event.

District Councillor Mrs. Patricia Schofield who regularly attends Parish Council meetings, updates Council

on various matters and takes forward any issues of concern.

Members of the Auckley Garden and Allotment Association who plant and maintain the flower tubs on

the village green and in the pinfold opposite Bell Butts Lane.

Parish Precept

The Parish Precept is the amount of money we ask Doncaster Council to collect on our behalf. Apart

from football rents this is Council‘s only source of income. This year the precept has been increased to

£28,000 to allow for inflation and also in order to contribute additional funds towards new play equip-

ment planned for Riverside Park.

Dog Fouling

This continues to be a problem – particularly on the Riverside Park and Spey Drive play areas. Would

dog owners please make sure they clean up after their pets whenever they are in a public place and keep

them on a lead when walking through play areas. There are several dog waste bins in the village, in addi-

tion, dog excreta may also be deposited in normal refuse bins, provided it is securely wrapped in a plastic

bag or other suitable container.

The Parish Council would like to thank the majority of responsible dog owners who always clean up after

their dogs and deposit waste products in the bins provided.

Christmas Carol Singing

Our ‗Carols Round the Tree‘ on 15th December was well attended, and a collection raised the sum of

£73.48 in aid of the Doncaster Branch of The Parkinson‘s Disease Society. We would like to thank the

Armthorpe Elmfield Band who accompanied the singing, members of the public who supported this event

and staff of the Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Trust who each year connect the elec-

tricity and festoon the lights on the Christmas tree. This is a service for which Council pays from Parish

Sadly on this occasion we were unable to find anyone willing to take on the role of Santa which greatly

disappointed the children. If any person is willing to be our Santa in December 2010 we would be

pleased to hear from them.

Suggestion to Change Date of Carol Singing

The ‗Carols Round the Tree‘ has always been held on the same night as the Christmas Market, however

there have been suggestions that it might be more appropriate to hold this event on a different night to

the Christmas Market when there is less noise to distract the singers.

Council would welcome your views on this matter. Please circle your preference, tear off the strip and

send to the Clerk, Mrs. Caygill, 10 Ellers Lane, Auckley, or any member of the Council.

So Christmas has been and gone, your sharp

shouldered jacket is at the dry cleaners, you

have worn your little black dress out and are so

glad that you bought your over the knee boots to

take you through the cold and rainy months of our

English weather. So now we are all thinking about

what we may be wearing next season and

particularly when the long hot summer days come

along, which at the moment we can only dream

about.

Well - you will be happy to know that romance is

well and truly in order for Spring Summer 2010

and this mood was evident with collections seen

across the board. Key elements of this came

through the clever use of fabric, in particular

lightweight and sheer fabrics and chiffon (see image

of Chloe dress). Beautiful cuts, knotted fabric and

layers of ruffles carry through to next season.

Once again, nude tones feature strongly with ice

cream shades adding to the softness of next season

- allowing more of an emphasis on de-constructed

cuts and drapes as a statement (rather than bold

colour seen Autumn/Winter 09). Touches of lace

and underwear contribute to the romantic look

with underwear worn as outerwear for the more

daring.

Prints are also strong, futuristic led but more

subtle than last season with some vintage prints

coming through (Roberto Cavalli).

And if you invested in sparkle this Autumn winter

don't despair its staying with us right through to

summer!!!! Wear as much sparkle or as little as

you please, dress your beaded dress down with a

pair of flat sandals and a straw hat or just show a

little glitz around your neck or on your handbag.

On that note Party dresses are a big trend to be

worn day or night with our attention moving from

the shoulders to the hips creating womanly curves.

Jumpsuits are staying too, try and get your hands

on a strapless one or one shouldered numbers, the

eighties vibe will stay with us.

White is always in for Summer, it was showcased

tailored, bleached, masculine, feminine, ruffles,

sheer. Yellow also made its debut in the Louis

Vuitton, Stella McCartney and Lacoste shows. If

you want colour think check and pinstripe instead .

Silver and statement jewellery is my prediction for

Summer, and worn with white will lead you into

the next season quite nicely.

Over 100 people from the villages of Auckley,

Finnningley, Blaxton, Branton and others further afield,

were treated to a wonderful evening of Classical Guitar

music on Saturday 23rd January, in the Auckley

Parish Centre.

Music, such as Cavatina, Pachebel's Canon and We'll

Meet Again before an encore of Mama Mia brought tears to the eyes of most.

The concert was arranged by

Zoe Godley a young guitar teacher from Branton who

wanted to do something for the ‗Help the Heroes‘

Charity. Her boyfriend is an ex-member of HM Forces so

this is a charity dear to her heart. This she and her two

friends from Amoroso did beautifully, with a solo from

Charlie King raising over £1,000.00 in the

process, with relatives and friends helping her selling

raffle tickets and Help the Heroes memorabilia. Thank

you to all of them. Margaret Ottewell

News from Branton St Wilfrid’s C.E. Primary School

It has been a busy start to the

Spring term and, of course, the snow

caused great excitement!

Visit by the Astrosphere for

Classes 5 and 6

As part of our science studies,

Classes 5 and 6 enjoyed a visit by

Steve Ibbotson with the

Astrosphere. This is a large inflatable

dome which the children enter to find

out about space. After a presentation

about the sun and the movement of

the earth, the lights were turned

down and the night sky was projected onto the walls. We learned to identify the stars using

stories told by the Greeks and also found out that Jupiter and Mars are currently visible in

our night sky. We learned about the 1969 moon landings and that it may be possible in the

near future to enjoy a day in space for £100,000. There was discussion of us adding this

trip to our extensive range of out of school visits! The children learned many facts about

space in the Astrosphere.

A visit to Class 5

by King Henry V111!

Through the mysteries of time

travel, King Henry V111 visited

Class 5 to introduce our Tudor

topic. We began the day at his

court, finding out about his love of

hunting and making and flying

eagle’s wings. We then completed

brass rubbings and practised the

skill of writing with quill pens.

Finally we learned a Tudor dance,

how to walk with a swagger stick and then used drama techniques to create storyboard

pictures. King Henry answered many questions about his life, particularly with regard to the

number of wives who were beheaded! King Henry has his own web-site

www.HenryTudor.co.uk where you can find interesting photographs, facts and kits to

download and make. Class 5 are now enthused and fired up to learn more about the Tudors in

their studies.

Roman Shields in Class 4

As part of our work on Invaders and Settlers, Class 4 researched life as a Roman Soldier.

They made themselves a SCUTA or shield, decorating it with some of the motifs which the

Romans believed would bring them good luck in battle. Cont..p31

Doncaster Advanced Motorists WHEN TEENAGERS TAKE TO THE WHEEL

Dear Readers, How we train our new drivers is under scrutiny this month – because the Government is still rightly

concerned about the number of young driver deaths on our roads.

What can a parent do when the time comes for their teenager to take to the road and learn to drive? The

short answer is ―pay for it‖ – as there is no substitute for proper professional tuition.

But the hands-on parent who wants to help their youngster with practice at the wheel can help make the

process less daunting, and perhaps reduce the need for quite so many lessons, before the dreaded L-test.

IAM experts argue that drivers who practice with supervision in addition to their lessons with an

Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) are more rounded at the end of the process and increase the chances

of first time test success.

But driving lessons are not getting any cheaper (if only because of the rising cost of petrol the instructor

needs).

If you want to help your youngster learn to drive, you need to go back to driving school yourself. Be

prepared to sit in the back when your youngster has their first driving lessons – but say nothing. Just take

it all in.

That way you can see and hear for yourself what the

professional instructor is advising, and make sure

that you reinforce those messages when you are

helping on practice drives with your youngster.

You have to also realise that your driving style may

be an effective one for you as an experienced driver,

but not necessarily a direct fit with the syllabus that

the ADI will be working to preparing your youngster

for the test. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA)

also publishes the curriculum on their website –

another very useful resource for parents.

Please remember too that not every family car is

suitable for practicing in, of course: a larger vehicle

that has an automatic transmission is of limited use if

you know that your youngster will eventually do

their test in a manual Micra, for example.

If you are interested in further information regarding

the courses that we offer, you‘ll be able to find this

information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists

website at www.iam.org.uk

Let It Snow…

Not

I do love snow, especially when it‘s fresh,

unblemished, and on a Christmas card! It

was fun when I was 10 and school was

closed, but now I‘m 40 it‘s not so good.

Perhaps I‘m the Victor Meldrew of snow

as I‘m no longer fan, especially after the

nation ground to a halt in January.

It has to be said that here in the UK we‘re

simply not geared up for snow on the scale

that we experienced. We don‘t usually get

the amount we did, and so we don‘t invest

in the machinery and infrastructure that

our Scandinavian friends do. Indeed, I met

some people from overseas the other

week, and their response was along the lines of, “Call that snow?! It’s 12 feet deep back home and all the

schools are open!”

Given all that I‘ve just said then, I‘m unsure as to why I bought ‗Vancouver 2010‘, a winter Olympics game

for the Xbox games console! However, it could be enjoyed from the warmth and safety of an armchair,

so I gave it a go. It has a ski jumping event, and we were playing as a family. I don‘t think I‘m

competitive…but then maybe I am…especially when I‘m consistently last to my wife, children, and dog! I

just couldn‘t get my digital ski jumper to balance in the air. Of course my family were offering all kinds of

advice, but to no avail. “Look at the skis and keep them level”, they said…then said louder…then yelled…

then screamed at fever pitch and in utter frustration…as once again my ski jumper face planted in the

snow.

I just couldn‘t get it. I was looking at the tips of the skis, they seemed level to me, what was the problem?

My family got more and more exasperated as they tried to show me what to do, and naturally laughed all

the more when I came down with a bump. I still couldn‘t see it! Until I finally realised that watching the

tips of the skis wasn‘t enough, I had to look at the horizon, and when I did that I saw it was lurching from

side to side! I hadn‘t been looking at the bigger picture, I was simply looking at my own little bit of the

world, the tips of the skis.

It‘s easy to do - look at our bit of the world, but fail to notice or hear what is going on around us.

Everything looks alright, but in reality the world is lurching from side to side. There are wars, famines,

disasters, injustice, greed, persecuted people, and the list goes on.

In the Bible the prophet Micah tells us “to act justly

and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” I

was heartened by the response to the earthquake in

Haiti, many eyes and ears were open to the plight of

the people there and responded. I pray that we

continue to see, hear, and respond to the needs of

the world – there are many - today, tomorrow, and

always.

Blessings
