Annual Diabetes Walk raises $17,000
The Olympics theme song played in the background and a torch led the way for participants at the 12th annual Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare Diabetes Walk.
More than 175 people gathered at Clinton High School the morning of Saturday, March 19, to “Go for the Gold: Beat Diabetes!” Proceeds this year totaled $17,000.
“We are grateful for the individuals, businesses and organizations who gave,” said Deanna Hendrich, GVMH Director of Development and Communications. “Proceeds from the walk help local patients pay for prescriptions, supplies and education so they can better cope with their disease and learn about a healthier lifestyle.”
The walk included booths with information and activities for adults and children, door prizes and a grab-and-go breakfast prepared by the Clinton Elks Lodge, which gave donations for the meal to the walk.
The top fundraising teams for 2016 were Golden Valley Medical-Clinton as the Overall Top Team and Team Boxer, led by Shannan Clark, was the Top Friends and Family Team. The Clinton JROTC won the spirit award, and Golden Valley Medical-Clinton, Golden Valley Medical-Warsaw and Hawthorn Bank were recognized for best team flags. Other teams included Clinton Technical School Practical Nursing, First Presbyterian Church, Golden

Chicken Enchilada Casserole- 1 Rotisserie Chicken, deboned 18 small corn tortillas 1 3lb bag of Mexican Blend shredded cheese 1 large can of green enchilada sauce 1 small can of sliced olives 1 can of corn kernels 1 can of black beans 1 small tub of sour cream In a rectangular casserole dish, pour some green enchilada sauce, enough to coat the pan. Layer 6 corn tortillas on the bottom, then begin layering some of the deboned chicken, sliced olives, black beans and corn, top with cheese. Repeat this process 3 times until the pan is full and you have a lasagna type casserole. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes, uncov-er and bake for another 10 minutes until the cheese becomes brown. Let cool for 5-10 minutes and cut squares, top with a spoonful of sour cream and enjoy.

BOTHWELL WOUND HEALING CENTER
RECEIVES CENTER OF DISTINCTION AWARD
SEDALIA, MO – Physicians, leaders and clinicians gathered Wednesday, April 6, at the Bothwell Wound Healing Center to celebrate the presentation of its Cen-ter of Distinction Award. The award was presented by Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services.
The Bothwell Wound Healing Center earned the distinc-tion by achieving outstanding clinical outcomes for 12 consecutive months, including patient satisfaction high-er than 92 percent and a wound healing rate of at least 91 percent within 30 days. Bothwell’s center was one of only three in Missouri to achieve this honor.
Bothwell Wound Healing Center, which averages about 250 visits per month, offers highly specialized wound care to patients suffering from chronic wounds. Advanced treatments include hyperbaric oxygen therapy, negative pressure wound therapy, bio-engineered skin substitutes, debridement, biological and biosynthetic dressings and growth factor therapies.

Zach Morales Recovery
At age 30, Zach Morales is the youngest patient ever to receive a total knee replacement from Dr. James Womack at Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare. Zach is a resident of Clinton and is a firefighter for the Sedalia Fire Department. His job duties require a high-er level of fitness than most occupations; Zach has to be able to climb ladders, lift and carry objects, crawl on the floor, and drag hose all while wearing about 70 pounds of gear. Zach began his physical therapy at GVMH Rehab & Wellness in Clinton one week after his surgery and has continued 3 days a week since. He has worked hard at physical therapy at each stage of his rehabilitation, starting with range-of-motion exercises in the beginning and progressing to job simulation activities such as lifting weights, carrying weight, and dragging weight (in this case his therapist, Jeanna Thomas, DPT).
According to Zach, “The decision to have a total knee was a difficult one for me, as well as my family. The uncertainties associated with the procedure and returning to work, given my career, were worrisome. The staff at GVMH Rehab were extremely helpful in calming those worries. They are all very professional and knowledgeable in their field, which made the rehab process much easier. They make each person’s situation important and find the best plan for each case. I hope to never need rehab again, but if I do, I won’t think twice about coming here again.”

Bothwell Ranked First in State for Value Based Purchasing
The results are in, and Bothwell Regional Health Center ranked No. 1 in the state for value-based-purchasing. Quality Management Director Ja Hickman received preliminary results in late March on how Bothwell compared to other hospitals in Value-Based Purchasing (VBP). The organization ranked first out of 70 hospitals in Missouri. Nationwide, Bothwell was 104
th out of 3,041 hospitals,
putting it in the top 4 percent.
”This is an achievement we need to celebrate,” Hickman said. “Our performance was the result of a lot of hard on the part of our staff, particularly our staff on 2 Southwest. Through multiple initiatives, we’ve worked on improving important quality measures and making sure staff and physicians are aware of what needs to be done and how it should be done to meet CMS expectations. They’ve ris-en to the challenge and have done an exceptional job.”
It’s head-spinning complicated, but value-based purchasing is the way the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) adjusts payments to hospitals on the basis of quality measures. In simple terms, the way VBP works is that CMS withholds some hospital payments and then redistributes that money to the hospitals with the best achievement or improvement on measures of hospital quality, clinical outcomes, cost of care and patient satisfaction. Bothwell ranked first in Missouri for overall highest percentage of bonus. Not only did it not lose any funding but ended up with a bonus of 1.51 percent.
As a comparison, Parkland Health in Farmington and Bonne Terre came in second with a factor of 1.33 bonus, and SSM St. Francis in Maryville was third at 1.30 percent. The scores compare data from calendar years 2013 and 2014 to calendar years 2014 and 2015.
“I am incredibly proud of our staff for this achievement,” said Chief Executive Officer Jimmy Robert-son. “What this means is that Bothwell Regional Health Center is providing this region with high quality care at a reasonable cost. It shows that our nurses and physicians – everyone, really – is fo-cused on doing what’s best and what’s right for our families and our neighbors.”
